If you are thinking about applying for a new program, don’t forget that there is a new CTE Program Application Technical Assistance Meeting on October 10 th at the Henry Center for Executive Development in Lansing. For more information on this meeting, please contact Tom Knight, our CTE Consultant. Possibly part of your story for the coming school year will be to really dig into your Microsoft Imagine Academy Curriculum materials and promote the industry certifications to your students. A Note from the President…Colleen Webb

. “A New Equation…Business + Education… MBEA Will Help You Write Your Story”

n behalf of the 2016 Michigan Business Association Executive Board, I would like to cordially invite you to the 78th Annual MBEA Fall Convention, and the 80th Anniversary of our founding. This year our Annual Convention

will convene at the historic Amway Grand Plaza Hotel in Grand Rapids November 16-18.

OThe theme for our event is “Business + Education…The Story Starts Here.” When I first heard this proposed theme, I immediately thought it was most fitting as some 80

years ago, a group of business teachers…better known then as “commercial” teachers, got together and started to write “our” story as an association. That story, started some 80 years ago, continues to evolve today as MBEA is still going strong.

What will your individual stories look like in the 2016-17 school year and beyond? Perhaps it means a new teaching position. Over the summer, numerous openings have been advertised. Speaking to MBEA members from around the state, there are going to be even more openings over the next few years as colleagues retire. Hopefully all of the open positons have been staffed.

Maybe you have been thinking about applying for a new CTE program to expand your current business offerings. If you are thinking about applying for a new program, don’t forget that there is a new CTE Program Application Technical Assistance Meeting on October 10th at the Henry Center for Executive Development in Lansing. For more information on this meeting, please contact Tom Knight, our CTE Consultant.Possibly part of your story for the coming school year will be to really dig into your Microsoft Imagine Academy Curriculum materials and promote the industry certifications to your students. During the 2015-16 school year, Michigan students and teachers earned 8,412 certifications…can you help surpass that number in the 2016-2017 school year?

I know that part of your story will be continued membership in MBEA, but now add or renew a membership in NBEA. This will be the perfect year to join, as our National convention is in Chicago. The benefits abound with NBEA membership. The biggest perk of membership is $250,000 Professional Liability Insurance that is absolutely free to you. Membership will also provide you with a number of NBEA Professional Journals and Publications to enhance your teaching. Along with your NBEA membership, comes a membership in North Central Business Education (NCBEA). These are just a few highlights that membership in our National organization will give you. We have made joining NBEA easy for you by including a membership line on our Convention Registration form and giving you the opportunity to join/renew at the “old” membership rate of $80 with MBEA kicking in the remaining $5.

Now, let’s examine how attending the 2016 joint MBEA/NCBEA Convention will help start a new professional story for the 2016-17 school year.

Microsoft Imagine Academy Excelling in Michigan

By Diane Harrington – MBEA Board Member At-Large

Since the Fall of 2014, high schools and community colleges in Michigan have had the chance to become Microsoft Imagine Academies. To date, 21 community colleges and 220 high schools have taken advantage of this opportunity. This past year over 7200 certifications were earned by students and educators!

What you get by being an Imagine Academy:1. You receive 500 vouchers for your students to

take MOS and MTA Exams including: SharePoint, Windows Server Administration Fundamentals, Networking Fundamentals, Security Fundamentals, HTML5 Application Development Fundamentals, Windows Operating System Fundamentals to name a few.

2. You receive 534 free Microsoft Office Approved Course books for download.

3. You receive 10 vouchers to take the MOS, MTA, MCE (Microsoft Certified Educator), exams as well or to share them with your staff.

4. Each month you receive a newsletter informing you of any changes or updates to the program.

5. The Microsoft Imagine Academy program offers curriculum geared towards Computer Science, IT Infrastructure, and Productivity as well.

6. Many new resources are now available for STEM employability skills and Computer Science through your Microsoft Imagine Academy program membership.

7. Microsoft Official Courses On-Demand (MOC On-Demand) blend video, text, hands-on labs, and knowledge checks to help build Microsoft technology skills for professionals who are time constrained because the materials are available anytime, anywhere.

8. Creative Coding through Games and Apps (CCGA) is a first-semester course designed to

introduce programming in the early secondary grades.

9. Be a part of the IA Academy online community and connect with educators around the globe.

10. Set up customized courses (curriculum is free) for your students to learn all of the above material online.

11. All the support you need to help you get started and use the benefits of the program to meet the needs of your students and district.

Why should you do this:1. Offering industry certification for your

students at no cost.2. Students could earn articulated credit at the

college level.3. Students could compete in the MOS State

Championship which is held two times per year and possibly earn a spot to represent your school and our state at the MOS National Competition in Orlando, FL.

4. It will help your students prepare for competitions in vocational student organizations.

5. This can be used as a recruitment tool for your classes.

6. Great PR for your class and district.7. Did I mention it is all FREE?

Please consider consider becoming an Imagine Academy! If you are interested, contact Tom Knight at [email protected] or by calling him at 517-373-8545.

If you are one already, make a commitment to use the resources better this coming school year. In addition, consider attending the MBEA Fall Conference which will be held in conjunction with NCBEA at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel on November 16-18, 2016. Take time for professional development in your content area (I know that in my district our PD days are NOT geared toward my area). We all need to network, learn something new, or learn how to do something that might save us time as we are all busy!

2016 Summer Academy - Finance BootcampBy Jerrod Black, MBEA Secretary

At this year's Summer Academy, MBEA members who teach or are prospective teachers in the Finance cluster collaborated to create and share materials to meet the standards. What an amazing session to lead and be a part of! Nothing is more powerful than having time to collaborate with your colleagues. There is little time to collaborate with other business teachers because for most of us, we are the only ones teaching business classes in our building and sometimes in the district. Through MBEA, we have the time, location and people to collaborate and create. I was honored to work with such amazing people. Not only did they share their resources, they worked to create new lessons and materials together. I would like to thank all who participated: Ed Albert, Lynda Bommarito, Treasa Evans-Dunn, Melissa Gordon, Karen Hanchett, Sarah Hempsall, Andrea Hudson, Tammie Neeley, Lori Pelton, Julia Salerno, Lori Smith, Beth Soisson, Heather Suggitt and Dorthy Switalski.

These educators worked tirelessly to share, create and collaborate with the other educators in the room. For newer members of the Finance cluster, these teachers helped guide their instruction and introduce them to the exciting world of Finance. I am encouraged and invigorated with the new tools for the next school year. It is always productive and FUN to get together with fellow business teachers. Please consider joining us at next year's Summer Academy. I look forward to seeing all of you at MBEA's 78th Annual Fall Convention!

MBEA - Our Social Media PresenceExecutive Board, Michigan Business Education Association

As an executive board, we have been working hard to come up with new and innovative ways to recognize our members and the great things they do in their classrooms, any tips that they may want to share with other members, and the exciting new things they learn at our Fall Convention and Summer Academy. We think it is important to continue our collaboration efforts outside of the professional development we provide you. We want to connect with you and we want you to connect with others. We think the best way to achieve this goal is through our social media presence.

MBEA is officially on twitter as well as Facebook. Our twitter handle is @mbea1936. We can be found on Facebook by searching "MBEA". We want to see:

New activities, games and lessons you have found Exciting new things happening in your program Project Based Learning activities and outcomes Program highlights and improvements New findings and "aha" moments as an educator Student successes with Microsoft certification Student successes in coursework Questions to pose to other business educators across the state Resource sharing with other business educators Convention/Academy tweets and hashtags Tricks, tips and new ideas, etc. Questions and suggestions for upcoming meetings, etc.

We want you to get as much from this organization as possible. Seeing you twice a year in person just isn't enough. Through social media, we can begin to interact in new ways that enhance the teacher experience and the collaborative processes for business educators. Join us in this new adventure and follow us on twitter @mbea1936 and on MBEA Facebook.

We thank you for all you do for your students, schools and communities. It is teachers like you that make a difference in the lives of so many. Thank you for your commitment to this organization and for all of your contributions to it. Best wishes to you and your students in this next school year! We look forward to seeing you at the fall convention!

Membership in Your Professional OrganizationBy Ronalyn Arseneau VP for Membership

MBEA is a professional organization whose purpose is to support and advocate for business educators in Michigan. There are many ways that MBEA performs this function, through providing professional development to aid teachers in the classroom and encouraging networking among members at those events; through communicating with members regarding requirements and opportunities available to them; through recognizing members who have demonstrated achievement in business education; through encouraging members to share their talents with others by presenting at the state conference and the summer academy each year; by coordinating with our regional and national organizations to connect members to a larger body of business educators; and by providing an organization with leaders to contact when questions arise regarding business education.

MBEA’s fall conference is an important vehicle for professional development for business educators each year. Much planning time is devoted to developing a rich program of professional development in a variety of areas. The summer academy is an event that is much more focused on a few areas of interest each year. In order to bring professional development to our members in the Upper Peninsula, MBEA planned a U.P. summer academy this year with multiple PD opportunities. These professional development programs are successful in providing program-specific CTE professional development that is required for Michigan CTE funded programs, as well as PD that is relevant to members and useful in the classroom.

So much of what members gain from attending MBEA professional development activities, however, also comes from networking with fellow members and taking the time to learn what great things others are doing in their classrooms. Networking benefits not only those members new to business education, but benefits all members who participate in professional development opportunities.

Plan to attend this year’s fall convention. In order to attend, you must be a member of MBEA. Membership renewal forms are mailed out at the beginning of December each year, with the membership year running from January 1 through December 31. If you did not renew your membership via this membership mailing, then your membership renewal for the state conference will only renew through the end of 2016. If that is the case, you may want to consider renewing your membership for two years so that you will reap the benefits of MBEA throughout the 2017 calendar year. If you have questions as to your current membership status, you should have received a membership card via email when you last renewed. If you do not have that information, please feel free to contact me at [email protected] and I will let you know if your membership is current for 2016.

Be sure to take advantage of all of the opportunities available to you through your professional organization, MBEA!
