Why study medicine?Studying medicine is so much more thangetting an MB BS degree and becoming adoctor. Medicine is a vocation and a way oflife. It is about putting the patient first andbeing compassionate to others.

Medicine is a tough profession, but thereare few doctors who regret their choice ofcareer. With all its challenges, the thrill ofbeing a doctor never leaves: medicine is

    exciting, stimulating and intrinsicallyrewarding.

The MB BS programme places considerableemphasis on developing the studentsexpertise in a whole range of practicalareas, including clinical, communication, observation, team-work and leadershipskills. The programme focuses on earlypatient contact and we have eliminatedthe traditional divide between pre-clinicalstudies and clinical years, which meansthat the students start seeing patientsfrom the very first term.

    learning experience that

    integrates theory and

    practice across basic and

    clinical sciences.

*The GMC recognises bodies to award primary medical qualifications and plans to start to quality assure UCLan and its first undergraduatemedicine programme. This is likely to take the form of a year by year review following the first cohort to graduation. Only during the finalyear of the programme will the GMC be able to approve UCLan and add it to its list of bodies that can award primary medical qualifications. There can be no guarantee that this will be the outcome of the review and UCLan has been required to make contingency arrangements sothat students enrolled in the programme will be able to complete their studies.

The patient-centredcurriculumOur medical degree programme is anexciting development which is reflected inthe Schools modern inter-professionalapproach. Teaching is provided across anumber of Schools within the Universityand local education providers, so as topromote the team-working and leadershipskills necessary to become a successfuldoctor.

The aim of the MB BS programme is todeliver a curriculum which ensures that ourstudents emerge as doctors who are not

only well grounded in clinical knowledgeand skills but also with strong values ofcaring and compassion. Students will followtheir patients along their care pathwaysin primary and secondary care in years3 to 5 in addition to the early patientcontact in year 1. This element ofcontinuity is a particular attribute of theMB BS programme and supports thedevelopment of the integration ofknowledge, skills and professionalvalues in our students.

The emphasis will be on basic medical

sciences such as anatomy, biochemistry, physiology and communication andclinical skills. Students will work in smallgroups to undertake problem based

learning (PBL). A scenario, presented by afacilitator, has been designed to link withthe learning outcomes for each year.

The purpose of using this format ofteaching is to help students develop skillsin evaluating clinical and scientific evidence.Working in small groups will also helpdevelop team-working and communicationskills in addition to developing skills as ascholar.

Throughout the programme, studentsbenefit from a range of learning strategiesPBL tutorials, seminars, laboratory basedteaching sessions, workshops and clinicalplacements in primary and secondary care. All students will be provided with a portabletablet to support their learning activityacross the programme.

During years 1 and 2, students are taughtby expert practitioners in our state-of-the-artclinical skills laboratories based at the Citycampus in Preston. In both years studentswill have community placements across EastLancashire and will have a secondary careplacement at the end of year 2.

In years 3 and 4, students undertake

supervised clinical placements in a varietyof specialities, in both primary andsecondary care. Placements are basedat ELHT, LCFT and LTHFT as well as

spending one day per week at theUCLan campus for additional teaching.

There will also be an opportunity forstudents who are considering USMLE/STEPexaminations to be provided withadditional teaching sessions.

In year 5, students will rotate through four, six week apprenticeships. This will includeward based medicine/surgery, emergencymedicine and trauma, community medicineand a student special study module inwhich a clinical topic can be studied inmore depth.

All students willbe provided witha portable tabletto support theirlearning activityacross theprogramme.

Years 3 and 4 build on the foundations ofthe early years as students rotate throughthe clinical specialities at ELHT and incommunity settings led by general practiceplacements. The teaching content forthese placements complement each other. As for the early years programme, thecurriculum develops along a spiral trajectorywith on-going integration of clinicalsciences with clinical and communicationskills. The remaining themes of Quality ofCare and Professionalism and Public Healthwill be explored through students followingpatients on their care pathways from

primary to secondary care and vice versa. These will be tailored to the learning

outcomes for each speciality but alsoexpose students to the complexity of

patients health problems. This processensures the interaction and integration ofthe four MB BS programme themes.

Based mainly at the Royal Blackburn andBurnley General Hospitals, three days perweek, which includes one day in a primarycare placement, students rotate acrossspecialities to develop their clinicalknowledge and skills in hospital andcommunity settings. The teaching andlearning for the remaining days will occurat a UCLan campus.

    Continuous assessment(Formative)

Continuous assessment provides thestudent with regular opportunities toconsolidate their learning. Students andtheir tutor can monitor progress andidentify, at an early stage, where theremay be need for additional help withtheir studies.

    Continuous assessment will include:

Annual appraisal: modelled on GMCGood Medical Practice

ePortfolio: This will be used to review thedevelopment of the students reflectivepractice and document completion ofclinical competencies

End-of-yearexaminations (Summative)End-of-year examinations measureprogression through the core curriculumand use a range of innovative assessmentmethods.

These methods will include computerbased knowledge exams and objectivestructured clinical exams (OSCEs), inaddition to the more traditional short

    answer written papers.

Final examinations will be taken at the endof year 4.

Year 5 will consist of competency basedassessments that will focus on assessingthe demonstrable abilities of knowledge, skills and professional behaviour and theirintegration that have been developedthroughout the five year programme.

The pattern of assessment is a combination of continuousformative assessment and regular examinations throughoutthe programme.

ePortfolioThe ePortfolio is an electronic solution forstudents to store and record evidence oftheir learning achievements and abilities, both as a tool to support professionaldevelopment and to demonstratecompetencies to others.

An ePortfolio will help students to:

    I. Keep documents together to evidenceprogress and learning

II. Reflect on learningIII. Remember to think about their

Personal Development Plan (PDP) andto think about what needs to be done

next to help progress in the MB BSprogrammeIV. Prepare for and support assessmentV. Highlight areas of success/interest for

    career development

The ePortfolio promotes life-long learningby encouraging the student to reflect ontheir own needs and clinical competences,as well as the needs of their patients. Mostpostgraduate medical professionals keepa portfolio and so introducing this tostudents at an early stage will support thedevelopment of key career skills. Teaching

about how to develop and manage theePortfolio, and to develop skills as areflective learner, will be incorporatedinto the course.

Reflection will involve looking back at alearning event and analysing it. It is aprocess of thinking in depth and fromdifferent perspectives and, consideringthoughts, actions and feelings. It is anexploration and an explanation of events, not just a description of them. It will allowthe student to think carefully about whatthe scenario or idea means for them and

their on-going progress throughout theMB BS programme. This includes what theywould do differently, if anything, next time.

As well as being a vital tool for personaldevelopment, the ePortfolio will form animportant part of assessment during thecourse.

Entry requirementsA-level entry or international equivalent:minimum grades AAB (chemistry, preferablybiology and a third related academicsubject).
