IFA Paris was established in 1982 to combine French fashion heritage with the modern globalized world. As the only school in Paris offering all its undergraduate and postgraduate courses taught in English, IFA Paris caters to a highly internaional student body from all corners of the world.

Recently relocated to 18-24 Quai de la Marne, IFA Paris overlooks the famous canal of “Ourcq” and is at the heart of the developing 19th arrondissement. The new locaion has tripled the size of the previous academic faciliies and added extensive new ameniies to benefit students, including bigger classrooms, a student lounge space, and a resource and study center. The building will also house several new fashion workshop spaces to accommodate hands-on projects.

This vibrant and arisic neighborhood is also home to many cultural landmarks, including the MK2 cinemas, Point Ephémère performance space for concerts and ballets, and le CENTQUATRE art centre with a wide range of cultural offerings, exhibits and high-profile fashion shows. The district is also the locaion of other presigious schools devoted to creaive arts, including École Naionale Supérieure d’Architecture de Paris-La Villete (ENSAPLV) and the Conservatoire Naional Supérieur de Musique, and is close to the École Internaionale de Créaion Audiovisuelle et de Réalisaion (EICAR). “The 19th” is emerging as one of the most exciing and simulaing area for students in all of Paris, and IFA Paris is excited to become a part of this neighborhood.

Paris holds a special place at the top of the fashion world as fashion’s birthplace. It has launched some of the most world renowned designers and luxury fashion houses including Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Dior and Hermès. Paris is sill the world’s fashion capital and coninues to draw atenion with important fashion events such as its biannual Prêt à Porter fashion week, fairs and trade shows, fascinaing concept stores, and industry leading trend agencies. Consequently, it remains the place where contemporary fashion designers including Marin Margiela, Rick Owens, and Alber Elbaz choose to live and work.

The specific Parisian feel for fashion and style extends beyond the bounds of the industry and into the city’s art galleries, museums, theaters, and disincive cinema and street life. While Paris undoubtedly has a disinguished fashion and luxury history, its present and future are just as compelling. Major luxury groups such as LVMH, KERING, RICHEMONT and companies like Hermès, Carier and Baccarat all have headquarters located in Paris. In recent history, Paris has turned almost every part of its economy into luxury through fashion, jewelry, beauty care as well as gastronomy, wine, spirits and travel. Paris remains an essenial stop for young fashion and luxury professionals who wish to understand the cultural, industrial and market forces that shape the fashion world today.

Shanghai is an open and extroversive metropolis and its stealthy ascent into the premiere ranks as a world fashion capital is undoubtedly a serious mission. Since late 19th century, Shanghai has been the fashion center of China. The Shanghai style has travelled the world in the 1920s and 30s and has recently re-emerged with fashion designers’ innovaive works of fusion trends.

Remarkably, it is the country’s consumers who are transforming today’s China into the world’s largest market of luxury and high-end fashion products. With internaional fashion and jewelry brands, from luxury to mass markets, forming the prosperous retailing scene in the city’s numerous fashion districts, Shanghai is unquesionably China’s Mecca for the fashion and luxury industry. While luxury cars, 5-star hotels and high-end restaurants are regular sights in the city’s downtown, there is now also a growing interest for yachts and private jets among China’s richest.

Teaching and Learning Methodology

13

The teaching philosophy in our postgraduate courses is based on the delivery of a high quality and interacive experience through pedagogy based on research and supported by empirical evidence of effeciveness. We believe in grooming students to achieve a higher level of cogniive learning through developing specific methodologies that will help them negoiate their future workplace.

We support enquiry based deep learning as one of our key principles in order to allow students to engage with the learning acquired rather than be passive learners. This is achieved through a balanced mix of different methods of delivery such as tradiional lectures, readings, seminar groups, demonstraions, discussions for a, role play and debates, field visits, independent study, self-evaluaion and team work based aciviies.

Teaching and learning aciviies are also regularly updated to include the use of new technologies, one of them being the implementaion of IFA Paris’ own virtual learning environment called LMS. It enables detailed course communicaions, syllabus management and the inclusion of all associated support requirements for students and staff to be in line with a defined e-learning strategy.

Keeping in mind the internaional focus of our postgraduate courses and the wide variety of cultures amongst our students’ cohorts, IFA Paris has put in place feedback mechanisms such as course commitees allowing paricipants and lecturers to express themselves on the overall quality of the course. While tradiional universiies will review their curricula on a 3 to 5 year basis, IFA Paris is commited to adjust its courses according to industry and students’ requirements on a yearly basis in order to be in perfect synch with the needs of each of its stakeholders.

Modules

Our Perfume and Cosmeics Management course covers a wide range of modules clustered into five main module groupings:

Business Issues:The capacity to listen and interpret markets’ signals is a key component of today’s managers. It needs to be coninuously culivated. Within this module grouping students will discover the idiosyncrasies of the fashion industry from an economic and financial view point.

Distribuion and Retail:New technologies are shaping the cosmeics and perfume offering of the 21st century in ways that do not always relate to product innovaion. A large part of the most recent innovaions concern the distribuion and retail sector, with interesing cross-overs between the Fashion and the Cosmeics and Perfume industries. This module grouping is aimed at giving students a new perspecive on tradiional distribuion and retail strategies.

Cosmeics and Perfume Environment:Is perfume sill a luxury? Are socially responsible brands more impacful? How is the impact of the fashion industry in the development of the cosmeics and perfume industry?... This module grouping will challenge students and develop their criical thinking approach in regards with the industry.

Markeing and Management:This grouping encompasses a series of modules that will be sequenially planned based on the structure of a markeing plan. The overall body of knowledge acquired by the students will prepare them to:Analyze complex markeing challenges based on pracical case studies; allocate resources strategically to achieve pre-determined objecives; crat brand DNAs allowing for the achievement of a sustainable compeiive advantage

Cosmeics and Perfume Lifestyle:While our MBA Program does not aim at creaing technicians we believe it is important for our students to be totally immersed within the environment of cosmeics and perfumes. This is why we have devised a series of groundbreaking seminars and workshops: to allow our students to experience the specificiies of the future industry they’ll be working for. From a week in an olfactory lab to test and create perfumes to a foray into the crating of perfumes “A La Francaise”, everything has been devised to provide a groundbreaking experienial learning.

The Capstone Project is a common aspect of the taught postgraduate courses at IFA Paris. It is an integraive experience in which students bring together much of the knowledge and skills acquired and developed during their course. This project reflects the many ways students at IFA Paris connect with business informaion, media communicaions professionals, and valuable assets within the fashion, texile and luxury sectors. Students may pursue a research-oriented, an interacive ethnographic or business management-oriented Capstone. The Capstone experience is also student-directed, meaning that students take responsibility for idenifying and defining a problem to work on, developing the approaches and methods needed to address the problem, carrying out the invesigaion independently, and presening findings in both oral and writen forms for examinaion.

The Capstone Project is a culminaing project, wherein students are expected to demonstrate how they have used informaion as a tool for transformaion in their personal, academic and professional lives. The tradiional form of an extended essay or thesis is a minimum of 15,000 words for individual capstones. The final form of the work will be proposed by the student, negoiated and agreed in assessment of the proposal and PPT. This project, arching over much of the academic year, may be the most ambiious research and wriing effort students have yet undertaken. It is assessed as a main component of study, an evidence of progress, ime and team management skills, as well as an achievement of learning outcomes. Consequently, it carries a high credit tariff of 40 ECTS credits and accounts for 30% of the final grade.

The project can be done individually, but we encourage a team approach; with tutorial support to help students find appropriate and individual focuses and to monitor progress. In some courses, this project is done across two to three ciies, thus giving it a truly internaional dimension and the opportunity to meet and connect with numerous helpful people and resources. Our intenion is that Capstone Projects will provide an enjoyable crowning educaional experience for IFA Paris students and a rewarding opportunity for mentorship for lecturers and external collaborators. It can then be used to demonstrate to future employers and other interested paries our students’ skills and apitude for similar independent external work assignments.
