Page 8: Mba handbook 4

PayTM-BCCI MarriageE-Commerce entity PayTm(owned by One97 Communications)has

won the BCCI’s title sponsorship rights for 4 years for Rs.203 Crores (Rs.2.42 Crore per match). The rights are for India’s

domestic & International cricket matches at homeWhat are the PayTm

rights ?-Sponsor Branding of

series with the title sponsor logo

-Designation as the title sponsor of the series

-Visibility @ the stadium-Broadcast sponsorship

rights

The winning bid by PayTm was Rs.203 Crore for 4 years which will see India play around 84

matches. PayTm will shell-out Rs.2.42 Crore per match. This is more than its predecessors were

paying the BCCI for title sponsorship. The incumbent

title sponsor was handset maker Micromax which paid Rs.2.2

crore per match since August 2014.

The base price for the bidding

was Rs.1.7 Crores. In 2013 & 2014-

the duration of the title sponsorship rights were less.

This time BCCI has made for a longer duration. Hence the

matches & base price are more. PayTm’s association as title sponsor will kick-off with

‘South Africa’s tour of India’ which starts in end-September

Page 9: Mba handbook 4

Deal of the Decadeo PayTm’s bid (i.e,Rs.2.42

crore pr match)is 42% higher than the base price. The past two sponsorship rights did

not see this kind of bidding. Micromax paid Rs.2.02 crore per match on a base price of Rs.2 crore.STAR India had

bought the rights at Rs.2 Crore per match on a base

price of Rs.2 crore

o PayTm’s spend per match is lower than Airtel’s which

forked Rs.3.3 crore per match from September 2010

to March 2013

India’s Best & Worst telecom firms

Page 12: Mba handbook 4

A Mint-Insta Vaani survey shows that Aircel is India’s best telecom company while the worst are Reliance Communications, MTNL & Idea

Service Quality of Telecom operators

have dipped in recent years

-partly because of Spectrum shortage

-Partly because most telcos are loaded with

debt arising from 3G(high-speed 3rd

Generation Services)& 4G auctions

-Partly because of a court ruling that has resulted in many cell towers in residential

areas being taken down

Government measures for improving Telcos

quality of services-In June

2015,Communication minister Ravi Shankar

Prasad said the govt was looking at penalizing telcos

for poor service-In a bid to address the

issue of lack of space for towers the minister said he

had asked State Governments to permit

the use of Govt buildings for towers &

Chief Ministers to make it mandatory for buildings to have

broadband ducts as a part of the building

code

Communication minister also

reaffirmed the government’s resolve

to clamp down on poor-quality services

& said the Department of

Telecommunications (DoT)would audit telecom networks

with the objective of reducing call drops

Survey Details

Mint in association with InstaVaani (a polling agency)called over 4,000 customers across 7 cities(wherever Mint is published

from i.e,New Delhi,Mumbai,Bengaluru,Chennai,Hydera

bad, Ahmedabad & Kolkata)and asked them how happy they were with their Telco

Survey ResultsIndia’s best telcos are Aircel Ltd(which has a limited presence)Bharti AirtelVodafoneBSNL

India’s worst Telcos are;Reliance CommunicationsMahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd(MTNL)

Problems faced by Indian Telcos

Shortage of spectrum/radio-waves

India has the lowest spectrum per

million mobile users in the world. Most of

the spectrum that has been acquired in the recent auction was to

keep existing operations going

India has the most stringent radiation

norms in the world with EMF (electromagnetic frequency) emission

standards that are a 10th of Global Standards. This means cell towers can

carry only limited equipment & therefore

have limited rangeThere is also growth

especially in Data which pays the telcos more. On the same highway where you have voice you are

selling Data aggressively .This results

in more Call drops

High-Speed 3rd Generation network 3G spectrum can handle

more traffic than 2G but most telcos have

national 3G footprints & most telcos are

slowing 3G roll-outs for now

The poor quality of service also relates to

the fact that India has some of the lowest call tariffs in the world & a large number of telcos

At the beginning of 2015 many telcos started shifting

their operations to new spectrum acquired in

February 2014 auction. This shifting caused a large number of call drops

The cost of buying spectrum & setting-up networks is one of the

highest leading to half of the country’ telcos

making losses very year

All telcos have heavily leveraged balance sheets. In some cases debt is almost 5 times the earnings before

interest, tax, depreciation & amortization of the company

Details of the SurveyMint’s survey on Telecom Operators was

conducted across 7 Circles which was chosen based on the seven biggest publication centers of the newspaper. In each of these 7 Circles ,Mint chose the three largest private sector telecom

operators by market share & the govt operator (markets in which BSNL or MTNL operations are

mutually exclusive) & surveyed atleast 500 customers per circle

Apart from questions on overall happiness with their telecom vendor, customers were

also asked to rate their vendors on 4 specific areas;

1.Quality of Network Coverage2.Quality of Internet(Data speeds)3.Quality of overall customer service4.Quality of the providers Call Centre

Survey Findings The one thing that is clear is that there is a huge gap between Aircel & the rest.

Indeed there is almost no difference between Airtel, Vodafone & BSNL which are grouped together below Aircel

Analysts attribute the fact that Aircel has come out on top to its lower

customer base. If you have a relatively smaller customer base then you have

fewer customers to handle

MumbaiKolkataChennai

In contrast the other state-owned Telco, BSNL has received pretty good ratings in most

circles where it is present. BSNL is the best operator by a long way in Karnataka

Karnataka

From the above analysis it is not very clear what factors are most important but frankly speaking the quality of network coverage seems

more important than other factors. This might explain why BSNL has a significant better rating than MTNL.BSNL has a general reputation of

offering superior network coverage than all other operators especially in remote areas
