ASSESSMENT•Every subject has multiple assessment components that together determine the student’s score for the subject.  For example, in English A Literature HL:

• Internally assessed• Individual Oral Presentation (IOP) – formal in‐class presentation based on works studied of specific options (10‐15 minutes)

• Individual Oral Commentary and Discussion (IOC) – formal oral commentary on poetry with discussion of another work studied in‐depth (20 minutes)

• Externally assessed• Written Assignment – reflective statement and literary essay on one (of three) works in translation (~1,900 words)

• Paper 1 – literary commentary on unseen passage of either prose or poetry (2 hours)

• Paper 2 – essay on two works studied of the same genre (2 hours)

Page 14: M.B. LAMAR HIGH SCHOOL€¦ · THE CAS PORTFOLIO •Not a quantitative log of hours spent •A portfolio of CAS experiences and reflections that – •Includes all 3 strands (creativity,

ASSESSMENT•An Internal Assessment (IA) is an assessment component evaluated by the subject teacher using a list of criteria developed by IB and is usually focused on some subject‐related work. Samples of the student’s work (oral performances, portfolios, lab reports, and essays) are submitted to the IB for moderation.  Through the moderation process, all raw marks awarded by the teacher are revised by IB based on the sample submitted.

•An External Assessment (EA) is an assessment component graded solely by trained IB examiners from around the world. External assessments include the written IB exams taken by the student at the end of a DP course, normally in their second year of the program.

UNIVERSITY RECOGNITION

The IB Diploma Programme (DP) enjoys a high level of respect and recognition among the world’s higher education institutions.

For students, success in the IB often results in advanced standing, course credit, scholarships, and other admissions‐related benefits at many universities both domestic and abroad.

TEXAS SENATE BILL 111 (2005)

A minimum of 24 hours of college credit will be awarded to any student who earns the IB Diploma and attends a public college or university in Texas.  However, the student must earn a score of at least 4 for each IB subject studied for the IB Diploma.  The credit earned must be applied to the student’s degree plan unless the college/university does not have an equivalent course available.  In that case, elective credit may be awarded.

There is similar legislation in several other states.
