|”The society which scorns excellence in plumbing because plumbing is a humble activity, and tolerates shoddi-ness in philosophy because philosophy is an exalted activity, will have neither good plumbing nor good philoso-phy. Neither its pipes nor its theories will hold water.” - John W. Gardner

Recently I spent the day at work with Southside friend, Kent Chambers. Kent is an instructor at a Technical School here in NWA where he teaches students how to work on diesel engines. Kent does not have an easy job for a lot of reasons. First of all, do you have any idea how complicat-ed even one engine is? Let alone possessing a working knowledge of many different kinds of diesel engines. The first thing I noticed about Kent and his job is the AMAZING wealth of knowledge he has in his brain about engines. Sec-ondly, teaching as a discipline is just tough. In some sense you are always trying to do more than merely “edu-cate.” You are trying to create better people, better workers, better citizens. Kent does all of these things well.

During my day with Kent, I sat through three courses he taught (a Freshman level course, a Junior level course, and a Senior level course). I also roamed around the shop and observed the students working on various projects, fixing different parts of different en-gines or troubleshooting an electron-ics issue. It was seriously fascinating.

As soon as I arrived at the shop that morning, Kent was trying to explain an electrical issue to one of his Senior

students. The kid was working on a wiring problem with the speedometer. Apparently the speedometer was read-ing the speeds of the truck up to a cer-tain point (50 mph) and then stopped working. This was an “impossibility” because the wire was not even con-nected from the speedometer to any-thing else. Later that day, in class, the Seniors were discussing the issue in their electronics course. They dis-covered that the wire connected to the

speedometer was being powered by a “magnetic field” around the wire’s end near the power source. At a cer-tain speed the wind running through the engine broke up the field. You know what that is called? Physics.

Kent Chambers is a physicist. I learned that pretty quickly and it was certainly a surprise to me. I simply did not understand how much phys-ics were required for a person to un-derstand the working of an engine.

(BTW, Kent yelled at that student, and he ended up yelling at me, as you can clearly see in this photo – Kent is so mean to me! He also yells at me at church too! Actually Kent is a su-per nice guy and he is yelling at me

because I don’t even know what that tool I holding does. I probably deserve it when he yells at me at church too.)But my real surprise for the day was the epiphany that Kent is more than a tech-nician, a professor, and a mentor. He is more than a physicist. Although I imag-ine Kent would hate this description of himself, I am going to say it anyway – Kent is a philosopher. Now philos-ophy in-and-of-itself is not a bad thing, its a good thing. Because philosophy

at its heart is asking questions of meaning and purpose. Over and over as I sat in Kent’s class-es he kept asking “What is [this engine part’s] purpose-in-life?”

What is it’s PURPOSE-IN-LIFE?

It was a beautiful thing to watch. Students would ask questions about something and rather than supplying them with a con-crete answer, he would respond with a question. “Well, what’s

its purpose-in-life?” Later, when I asked Kent about it he told me that it is more important that the students un-derstand the why rather than the what.

The “why” and the “what.” Time and time again, when we read the gos-pels, people come to Jesus with ques-tions about the “what.” And time and time again Jesus replies with ques-tions or parables rather than con-crete answers. He does this because the why matters more than the what.

This may sound funny, but when I left my work-day with Kent, I felt like I had a renewed sense of purpose as a per-son. I was reflective of my own “pur-pose-in-life.” So often I get enamored with the “what I do” in my life and end

I don’t know who coined the phrase teachable moment, but I like it. A teachable moment is a window of opportunity when circumstance, atti-tude, attentiveness & timing all intersect. It can happen quickly. It can also pass quickly. Wise parents take advantage of teachable moments to instruct their children. Wise teachers & wise employers do the same to instruct those in their charge. Christians are often presented with teach-able moments. The wise take advantage of them because there’s no guarantee the same one will come again. We were given a teachable moment on Easter Sunday. It’s the one Sunday of the year people are more receptive to an invitation to church than any other. We were blessed with a great many guests, some for the very first time. You are to be commended for how you responded to the challenge! Some of the comments I heard were: “What a great church!” “I loved the singing!” “The people here are so friendly!” “It was an inspiring worship service.” “My kids loved it & so did we!” There is no small effort in The Kingdom. Your labor of love in serv-ing at Coffee Connections or greeting or ushering or shaking hands or teaching or parking away from the building or giving up your seat or speaking positively or simply smiling all worked together for the good of The Kingdom. You did not let this teachable moment slip past us. Eternity will bear witness to the good that was shown others on April 20, 2014. Thank you, Southside Family! May we never let the new command get old!John 13:34-35 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” - Jackie

up going through the motions with-out purpose. I need to be reminded of the why. Why do I do what I do?

In my work-day with Kent I learned that engine parts are more than just objects that do this or that. They have a mission to the larger pur-pose of making an engine run well. Kent has a mission of making good technicians out of apprentices. He also works on making better peo-ple out of them! (They were plan-ning a community service project at the end of the day with the students).

Kent Chambers folks. Engines and Mission. Kingdom work at a technical school. It matters more than you could ever imagine.

Spring and Summer Calendar Highlights

Volunteer Opporutnity: Meeting May 4th Immediately Following Ser-vices (Lunch Provided)

We have an amazing group of kids in our Journeyland program and we are reaching out to you to help us serve them. We would like to structure our teacher system a little differently, but in order to do that, we need servants! That’s where you can help! Here is how the new system will work. We would like to have 2 sets of teachers who would teach for the 9 months that school is in session (September through May). The idea is that you would teach a year and then be off a year. We would also like to have a set of teachers who would only teach in the summer (June through August). Ideally, we need two people per classroom. This will be especially helpful in case one of the teach-ers has a conflict and has to be gone. If there are two teachers per classroom, then there is always a prepared teacher for Sunday Bible class. It can be husband/wife teams or friends who would like to teach together. Because we know life happens and there is always a chance that both teachers could be gone at the same time, we would like to create an emergency sub list. You wouldn’t be used very often, but you need to know that it would be a situation where you would be called on at the last minute and would have to step into a classroom and teach the material that has been left for you. It’s really not as scary as it sounds! The grade levels are Pre-K, Kindergarten, 1st&2nd combined, and 3rd&4th combined. Pre-K and Kindergarten could be com-bined depending on the numbers that move up each year.It is our hope that by creating a rotation system, our teachers can serve in Journeyland and then have time off to get their spiritual nourishment by attending adult Bible classes and be rested and ready to serve our chil-dren again. There will be an informational meeting Sunday, May 4th to go over this plan again, clarify anything that is causing confusion, and answer any questions you have. We will have lunch after morning services in the Wild’s Fellowship Hall and have our meeting immediately following. Please be prayerfully considering where and how you can best serve and plan to join us May 4th! We look forward to serving with you! Many Blessings!Joe James and Kristin Page
