DELTA CITIZEN OF THE YEAR Our Village is full of people worth celebrating! They are our neighbours, people who care about others, adults who give more than they take for the betterment of the community. These caring leaders are found throughout the Delta area and they set an example for others to follow. Their contributions, as informal volunteers, make life brighter for us all. Sponsored by the Delta Agricultural Society, this award is intended to recognize the numerous unpaid, voluntary contributions made behind the scenes which provide extraordinary help, care and leadership to groups in the community over a long period of time.

It is that time of year when our thoughts once again turn to sunshine, flowers and green grass. With the addition of four new members, the Delta Beautification Committee is back at work adding some colour into our village.

Thanks to everyone who cleaned the village on the annual Pitch-In Day on April 19th. A special shout out to those residents who keep their roads, ditches and streets clean every day.

The flower barrels have been cleaned and the benches have placed so now we wait for the planting season to

arrive. Volunteers will be planting flowers in the barrels, at the village signs and gazebos on Saturday, May 27th at 9:00 a.m. To mark Canada’s 150th birthday, a colour scheme of red and white will be used. Please consider joining the volunteers in planting the flowers this year when they gather at the parking lot across the road from the Jubilee Block…..you will be able to identify the group by their gloves and shovels!

Three trees will be transplanted into Stevens Park in June; additional enhancements in the fall are dependent upon budget funding.

This year the Committee will be focusing upon the rehabilitation of Russell Park: the corner park along the shore of Upper Beverley Lake that is central to the Old Stone Mill and the Old Town Hall. With the goal of making Russell Park a focal point in the village where people can stop and enjoy the simple peace and quiet of village life, residents are asked to keep this area in mind when thinning home gardens. Anyone with extra plants are asked to contact Mary Beth Wylie by calling 613-928-2942 or by emailing [email protected].

Delta is a unique village that is just off the beaten track. As visitors come through the village, the Beautification Committee is hopeful that they will be surprised and feel like they have just discovered a special destination. To that end, the Committee will be sponsoring a contest which will capitalize on the village’s history with the ‘Best use of an antique as a planter or incorporated into the garden’. Residents should be creative and consider planting flowers in old wheelbarrows, or old trunks or even in a piece of farm equipment from the back yard.

The Committee has once again entered ‘Delta’ into the Rideau Lakes Township Beautification contest with judging being held during the second week of July.

The Beautification Committee has other decorating ideas which will enhance the village and help celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday. The Village of Delta was established seventy-three years before Canada came into being as a country. It is now time to remind people of how long Delta has been in existence and how beautiful the area is.

With a lot of work ahead of them, the Committee is excited about their plans and vision for the village. “This is your community too, so please join us in celebrating this beautiful place.”

MUNICIPAL NEWS from Councillor Cathy Livingston Email: [email protected]

Telephone: 613-928-2796 Well Spring has finally arrived, the song birds are back, the frogs are chirping and the daffodils are blooming. I can hardly wait to see the spectacular sight when the Canada 150 tulips, that were planted in Stone Mills Park and beneath the two village entrance signs by volunteers from the Delta Beautification Committee, grow and flower to show the Canadian Flag. It has been a sad time at the Council table with the tragic loss of our friend and Co-Councilor Doug Good. He was a great supporter of the Township of Rideau Lakes and a leader within the community of Portland. Doug is sincerely missed by all. On April 3rd, Council declared his seat vacant and voted to hold a by-election within Ward 1 - Bastard & South Burgess. This by-election will give you, the residents, the opportunity to vote for his

replacement. Please refer to Page 9 for complete details. Charitable and Not-for-Profit Organizations within the township were invited to submit an application for a Canada 150 grant that would help them celebrate this very special anniversary for our country. A total of 17 organizations submitted an application and were successful in receiving the $500 grant. There will be a lot of different celebrations being held throughout the entire municipality so be sure to watch for advertising, Locally, grants were awarded to the Delta Agricultural Society and the Delta Mill Society. The Economic Development Committee hosted its first annual Business Breakfast Celebration on April 7th at the South Elmsley Hall with the following businesses being recognized:

Business of the Year: Country Roads Community Health Centre (www.crchc.on.ca) Business Innovation Award: 2 Low Inc. (www.2low.ca) Young Entrepreneur Award: Scott Blair of Scott Blair Construction (www.scottblairconstruction.com)

The 50th annual Delta Maple Syrup Festival was a huge success last month and we look forward to another celebration in June when Lower Beverley Lake Park will be commemorating 50 years as a municipal camping facility. We have great volunteer support in this community which can assist these organizations as they continue to grow each year. The Delta Community Improvement Committee is busy working behind the scenes and will soon have some information and an invitation to the community within the next couple of months. The Beautification Committee will be diligently working with this group to present our village in the best way we possibly can so when people come for a visit, they will want to return or even live here.
