Dear Parishioners,

I told you that things would be getting busier as

the months moved along this Fall.

First, a fond farewell and the deepest gratitude to

Fr. Fernando Reta, O.P., as he heads back to Ar-

gentina today. He has been a delight to have in

the Parish and I hope that he will be able to

come back next summer as well. He was recent-

ly elected Prior in the city of Mendoza so maybe

he can plan a return visit a little more easily. If

you would like to stay in touch with Fr. Fernan-

do or to express your own words of thanks, his

[email protected] and his new mailing

address is:

Buonviaggio, Padre Fernando!

A couple of other reminders:

Let us continue to pray for each other. Thank

you for all of your support for the Parish, the Di-

ocese, and the Dominican Order!

Luke “Ray” Green: 75 years a Saint Pius Parishioner and

World War II Hero, Passes at 100 years of Age

Luke “Ray” Green, born in 1920, grew up on

Woonasquatucket Avenue in Centredale where

he went to grammar school. Like many kids at

the time, he went to work out of grammar school

in the mills, the Esmond Blanket Company in

Ray’s case, instead of going to high school. As

World War II in Europe began to heat up, Ray

joined the RI National Guard in 1940 and began

active service in the US Army on February 24,

1941.

Eventually Ray was assigned to the 43

rd

Signal Company,

part of the 43

rd

Infantry Division. The 43

rd

Signal Company was

made up of soldiers primarily from New England. The 43

rd

Signal

Company was shipped off to the South Pacific in October 1942 to

begin a long slog by the US Army and Navy to capture Japanese

controlled islands to eventually try and reach Japan.

Guadalcanal, the Solomon Islands, New Guinea, Luzon

Island in the Philippines—those places are familiar to anyone who

has read about our World War II fighting in the South Pacific. Pri-

vate and later Sergeant Ray Green was in all of those places and

participated in combat for 3 ½ years, never once even going on

leave.

As a member of the 43

rd

Signal Company, Ray was part of

a group of soldiers that ensured reliable communications for the

Command units that coordinated both Army and Navy forces in bat-

tles. Ray had to keep radios working, sometimes alone for weeks

away from his unit, and had to climb up mountains and through

swamps to lay phone lines, often during battles while avoiding Japa-

nese snipers and shelling from distant artillery units. Malaria,

snakes, sleeping in fox holes filled with water were all hazards of the

job. Ray was so reliable that when the 43

rd

reached the Philippines,

he was assigned to work by himself in the jungle with Philippine gue-

rilla units against the Japanese. Among his many Army medals, Ray

was awarded a Bronze Star for his service in the Philippines.

Ray felt blessed when he was safely back in the US in the

summer of 1945 just as the war ended. He met his future wife Helen

in a downtown Providence furniture store and she convinced him

that he would have to convert to Catholicism if he wanted to marry

her. Ray says with a straight face that when they went “parking”,

she brought along a catechism to prepare him for his conversion.

They married in 1946 and moved to Zella Street where he lived until

the pandemic and on his own since Helen died in 2015. For the last

two years he has lived in an assisted living facility in Westerly where

he died.

Ray owned and ran Green’s Auto Upholstery shop in War-

ren for 40 years before retiring. His two children, Kenneth and

Cathy, and several grandchildren have brought him happiness in his

later years. Ray has always been an avid outdoorsman enjoying his

many years with the Boy Scouts and enjoying canoeing—something

he did up until 98 years of age. At 75 he learned to ski! He and his

wife Helen enjoyed many social occasions at St. Pius and at parish

events at the Venus. Ray is survived by his son Kenneth and his

daughter Cathy and several grandchildren. His funeral Mass at St.

Pius took place on Friday, October 1, 2021, 5 weeks shy of his 101

st

birthday. May he rest in peace.

BABY BOTTLE BOOMERANG

After Mass on October 16 & 17, you will see

empty baby bottles at the church exits.

Please take a bottle home and fill it with your

spare coins (cash or checks) and return the

bottle to church next weekend or the weekend

after. Collection bins are located near each

exit. Your generosity helps the Right to Life

Services continue providing pregnancy

tests and ultrasounds throughout Rhode Island in their

Ancora Women’s Mobile Care Center, and helps stock

the shelves of their Maternity Hope Chest to serve

mothers who have courageously chosen LIFE but need

a helping hand caring for their precious little ones.
