Warm-up & Agenda Check
Two of your peers will check your agendas while you work quietly on the following assignment.
Warm-up: Read the article and answer the questions1) pH measures the concentration of: _________2) Describe one way to name an acid3) List 3 properties each of acids and bases
C-Notes
Set up Cornell notesTopic: Acids and Bases
copy all notes in green
Acids are substances that donate H+ ions when dissolved in water and have a pH between 1-6
Bases are substances that accept H+ ions when dissolved in water and have a pH between 8-14
Why does the color of the solution change?
Ph indicator is an organic molecule that undergoes a chemical reaction when it accepts or
donates a H+ ion. The structure of the molecule changes and
therefore absorbs different wavelengths of light!(Remember a color change can be a sign of a
chemical reaction)
Draw a comic of an acid or base changing the color of a solution that contains pH indicator.
Or
Draw a picture and write one paragraph explaining how acids and bases affect the color of
a molecule
-15 points-
What do you think would happen if we added an acid and a base together?
Carbon dioxide reacts with water to form carbonic acid
Let's read why this can be dangerous
Answer the following questions in a paragraph with your group
1) What occurs when carbon dioxide reacts with ocean water
2) What effects does carbon dioxide dissolving in ocean water have?
3) What consequences can there be from your answer in #2?
Time for Project
You have twenty minutes to get with your groups, work on your project, and complete the worksheet given. Students not on task will be written down
and receive -5 points.
