NEF 5K Run/Walk has record attendanceIt was the biggest and the best according to those who attended the Northside Education Foundation’s (NEF) 5K Walk/Run held this past Saturday.

Almost 5,000 people registered for the NEF 5K Run/Walk and Family Wellness Fair, presented by CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health System.

“This show of support helps the Foundation continue to successfully champion for NISD faculty, staff, and students,” says Cassandra Miranda, Director of School-Business-Community Partnerships.

Money raised helps fund teacher grants and other initiatives for students. In addition, NEF awarded $19,000 in cash awards to team captains from 64 campuses and sites for their efforts to boost registration.

The highest percent participation and largest team trophy went to Beard ES with 328 participants, and the Northside Learning Center won the same honors for a non-campus team with 134 participants. In addition, the NISD Transportation-South team won the coveted Spirit Stick.

This week’s Video of the Week features Principal Debra Piñon who will serve as the first principal for the District’s 75th elementary school, Boldt ES, opening in August 2015. Click here to learn more about this veteran principal.

Students turn trash into campus mural

First graders at Steubing ES are learning how to turn trash into art. The students collected bottle caps and transformed what typically would have gone into a landfill (or as trash on the street) and made a beautiful mural for their school.

“The kids put a lot of time into creating this beautiful work of art that reflects Steubing’s leadership in recycling, reducing, and reusing,” said teacher Lavonda Keuper.

In addition, cans from the school cafeteria were repurposed as flower pots. The cans were cleaned, holes drilled in the bottom, decorated, and then the students used their empty, clean milk cartons to partially fill the bottom of the cans with dirt to conserve soil spillage.

“We want to share this idea with NISD in hopes that other campuses will get their students involved in taking care of the Earth as well,” Keuper said.
