Students- Achieving Better Than Ever

There are so many students doing great things at Moss Vale High School and achieving

success in so many areas that it would be impossible to mention them all. However, I

would like to mention a few notable students for their efforts within the school and wider

community. Jeremy Millward was nominated by Ms Leet for his outstanding work last

year in raising awareness of the R U OK campaign in an effort to support the mental

health of all our students. Jeremy was one of numerous finalists and was successful in

winning the 2021 Barbara Hocking Memorial Awards in the Young Conversation

Champion category. These Awards were established by the Australian charity

R U OK to recognise those in the community who help create an environment where

young people are connected and protected from suicide.

Jeremy has also started another initiative with his Year 11 peer Amy Darch in relation to

the significant issue of gender-based violence. Both Amy and Jeremy spoke at our recent

assembly to promote the idea of ‘unmuting’ yourself and speaking up when you see

disrespect or violence, particularly in relation to women and girls where there is an

endemic problem in our society.

Thomas Gillis of Year 12 has achieved his Bronze Award in the Duke Of Edinburgh. To

achieve this award Thomas spent close to 6 months challenging himself physically and

continuing to support members of our community. Thomas thanked Mr & Mrs Button at

last weeks assembly for their ongoing support in achieving this award.

Lauren Jones of Year 11 took the initiative to speak with me and senior executive about

making changes to the sport shorts which are a unisex fit and simply do not fit all body

shapes comfortably. Through Lauren’s efforts we are now in negotiations with our

uniform provider to produce a better quality sport short designed specifically for each

gender and different body types.

I would also like to mention and thank the following students who presented or

performed at our recent assembly: Oscar Dunn-Luck of Year 10 for an outstanding

keyboard performance of “Prelude in C# minor” by the Russian composer,

Rachmaninoff. Years 7, 8 and 10 Dance students for performing a variety of dance styles

such as Hip-Hop, Popping, Electric Boogaloo and Jazz. Mia Gardner of Year 9 for

presenting an interesting Book review of Shiver by Allie Reynolds. Congratulations to our

two students who were in the draw for students with the most Personal Best points and

won a $50 gift card each. Well done to Adam Albrighton and Cody Shaw, both from Year

9.

Bring Your Own Device

Many thanks to the vast majority of our parents who have ensured that their child is

coming to school each day with a device. As you would all be aware, we have a new

digital learning platform from which all students can access their work and assignments

when deemed appropriate and necessary by their teacher. Just a reminder to parents, if

Page 3: May 2021 Students Achieving - mossvale-h.schools.nsw.gov.au

Moss Vale High Newsletter Issue 1 Term 2 2021

there is an issue with your child’s device such as needing repairs, please ensure a note

is sent in to school so we can organise an interim loan of a laptop.

Athletics Carnival

I would like to thank Ms Debby Middleton, our hardworking Sports Organiser, for an

outstanding Athletics Carnival on Tuesday 27 May 2021. The weather was kind to us and

students were exemplary in their behaviour and willingness to participate in sporting and

novelty events. Thanks also to all staff who assisted in supervision, recording and

running of the many events. Finally, I would like to thank Ms Youman and her TAS faculty

for feeding our staff on the day.

The Happiest Man on Earth

I have shared my reading of The Happiest Man on Earth by Eddie Jaku at multiple

assemblies. Eddie is a 101 year old survivor of the Holocaust where Hitler and the Nazi

regime attempted to exterminate Jews from Europe and murdered 6 million of them.

Eddie is also one of the survivors that speak regularly at the Jewish Museum in Sydney

where our Year 10 students have visited on their History excursion, and many of them

have actually met Eddie and heard his incredible story of survival. Eddie was imprisoned

in Buchenwald and Auschwitz concentration camps where he faced the most horrific

conditions and atrocities. I continue to share Eddie’s book and messages with our school

community as he has such a resilient and positive attitude despite experiencing the

worst humanity has to offer. I would like to

share two of the many inspirational messages

from Eddie’s book:

‘There are always miracles in the world, even

when all seems hopeless. And when there are

no miracles, you can make them happen. With

a simple act of kindness, you can save

another person from despair, and that might

just save their life. And this is the greatest

miracle of all’.

‘Here is what I learned. Happiness does not

fall from the sky; it is in your hands. Happiness

comes from inside yourself and from the

people you love. And if you are healthy and

happy, you are a millionaire’.

I am hoping to share Eddie’s amazing book

with the entire school community in 2022

through the Kick off With Reading program

where each student and staff member is

gifted a book that we enjoy reading together.

Uniform

Welcome back to already busy Term 2. As we move into the cooler months it is again important to refer

to the correct school uniform. Students are reminded that non-uniform jumpers are not to be worn

under the school jacket. To add extra layers students can wear non-visible undershirts, and either the

woollen jumper or cotton zip-up jacket under the school jacket. If students have any concerns in

purchasing the school uniform they should see either one of the Deputy Principals for assistance.

BYOD (Bring Your Own Device)

2021 has marked the start of formally implementing a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) policy at Moss

Vale High. Thank you to the vast majority of families who are supporting their child to bring a charged,

suitable device each day. A reminder that if you are unable to purchase a device for your child due to

financial concerns, you should contact the school and organise a meeting with the principal so that we

can discuss options to support your child here at school. Students are reminded that they are to see Ms

Campbell prior to home group each morning if they do not have a functioning device with them for the

day. At this point of the year, the major concern has been devices that are not fully charged at the start

of the day which then become flat during lessons. Please ensure that devices are fully charged each

night so that they are able to be used throughout the school day.

HOW2Learn (Higher Order Ways to Learn)

This year the HOW2Learn (Higher Order Ways to Learn) program continues to be a learning focus of our

school. Each year group will focus on five of the twenty learning habits, such as resilience, effective

listening, accountably and remembering, and will be explicitly taught how to use these habits as life-

long learners.

Short film competition

‘Make Every Day Count’

Make Every Day Count is a film competition open to all students from Kindergarten to Year 12. Entries

close 28 May, 2021. Schools can participate as a class entry or submit films created by individual

students or groups of students. All films submitted must have the approval of the school principal. The

theme is ‘make every day count’. Schools and students should explore all the possible reasons why

attendance is important and what reasons may cause poor attendance.

25% of Australian school students attend less than 90% of school days. This adds up to 20 or more

days absent in a school year. At this rate, after 13 years of school, it equates to more than 260 school

days lost or more than 5 terms. According to the report Attendance Matters, absenteeism can increase

social isolation, including alienation and lack of engagement with the school community and peers,

leading to emotional and behavioural difficulties.

Schools are encouraged to create films that address the issue of attendance in schools and how this

can impact the student- socially, academically and personally.

Competition details: entries close 5pm on 28 May 2021. All films should be 3 minutes or less, .mp4

format, 108x1920 screen size and 25fps, entered through the online submission form found at

https://education.nsw.gov.au/news/latest-news/student-short-film-competition

Parents and caregivers will need to sign the consent form enclosed.

BAMIR LANGUAGE GALLERY

The focus on celebrating students work has

continued this term with our year 7 students

displaying their best ‘Sense Poem’ as well as

illustrating a part of their favourite poem.

Meanwhile, our year 9 students have applied the

principles of ‘Symbolism’ to create their very

own family crest and reflect on the ways ‘How 2

Learn’ allows them to become ‘meta-learners’.

Kindness Project Students from the SRC will be writing ‘kindness notes’ to other students and teachers within the school, they will be done every Friday and will be given to everyone. Through the use of this simple act of kindness, we aim to improve everyone's day and self esteem. Even a small letter just saying ‘thank you’ can change someone's life completely.

i98FM Illawarra Convoy The i98FM Illawarra Convoy is the largest truck and motorbike convoy in the Southern Hemisphere. The event is one of the region’s largest fundraisers. The funds raised provide direct support to individuals and families affected by life threatening medical conditions as well as supporting charities that work with these people and local hospitals. MVHS will be holding a day to support the cause in Week 9 so keep a look out for upcoming details on the event and get involved.

Shiver, a psychological thriller, written by Allie Reynolds shows the

competitive side of the human race, proving what people will do to

become the best- no matter the cost. The haunting reunion of five

friends a decade after one mysteriously disappeared in the French

Alps. The story switches between the perspective of Milla from the

present to the past, ten years before. It shows how she and the

rest of her friends met and how they trained for the Olympic

snowboarding trials. However, things started to take a dark tun as

rivalries and loyalties are formed, learning to the disappearance of

one of their members. Now they are locked away with no contact

with the outside world and strange things are beginning to happen.

Ten-year-old secrets reach the surface. There’s no one to trust as

the talk of murder begins to rise. Shiver show a different style of

writing incorporating a friendly sport into a chilling, heart-stopping

mystery that will keep you wondering to the very end.

The activity week assembly will be taking place in Week 5 Wednesday 19 May 2021. Here students will get to hear about the details of each activity what is required to attend particular activities.

All students in the school are expected to select an activity and attend for the duration of the Activity Week. There will be no normal lessons conducted during this time. The activities offered provide a wide range of choice for students, from overnight camps to day to day activities, from expensive to minimal cost. If your child doesn’t select any Activity, supervision and a work program are provided at school.

It is most important that students and parents consider the options carefully, as there is a one third non refundable deposit to be paid late in Term 2. This deposit is like any paid to a travel agent, it is used to pay deposits to companies supplying accommodation, transport or services. In addition, once a teacher starts paying for the remainder of expenses, this portion also becomes non-refundable. While the full cost of the activity may be paid immediately, we also have an instalment program so families with a number of students may pay off the activities of their choice. There are 4 instalments throughout the year, with the final payment due at the end of Term 3. The instalment dates will be listed on the front cover of the information booklet.

The first date of payment and the most important is Week 9, Thursday 17 and Friday 18 June 2021. As we are trying to place all students from Year 7 to 11 it is important to realise there are some very popular activities that fill quickly and, without prompt payment of the deposit, students may not secure their first choice. It is, therefore, really important for students to list three choices in order of preference. If a student misses out on their first preference they are placed in their 2nd. It is also important for parents/ carers and students to understand that while every effort is made to accommodate student’s wishes, it is not possible for students to change their preferences after the deposit has been paid. Therefore, it is encouraged that all students should choose carefully. A reminder that any activities costing $200 or more can only be attended by students who have paid all their school fees (excluding general contributions).

Some activities involve water. In term 4, all students participating in these water activities will need to complete a swimming ability challenge. Please, don’t let your child choose a water-based activity if they aren’t a competent swimmer. Non-proficient swimmers will not be allowed to participate in surfing or snorkelling activities.

Moss Vale High School is quite unique in offering such an extensive Activity Week program. This program only operates with the good will of the staff of Moss Vale High School, who are prepared to organise and, in the case of overnight activities, give up their own time to enable this program to be offered to students. The 2021 program lists nineteen Activities with four of these being new activities. We hope you see the value of this program by supporting it in 2021.

Moss Vale High School student Jeremy Millward

has been named the Young Conversation

Champion Award at the 2021 Barbara Hocking

Memorial Awards.

Organised by the suicide prevention

organisation R U OK? The awards recognise

those who help create a world where we are all

connected and protected from suicide. The

panel recognised the significant contribution

Jeremy is making to suicide prevention work

which has opened up the conversation for many

at Moss Vale High School.

Jeremy, in Year 11 was recognised for his

suicide prevention work after he helped

organised an R U OK? Week at school in

September 2020 to bring awareness to mental

health. Activities included: ’Wear it Yellow Day’,

a conversation walk, school lesson activities

about how to have an R U OK? Conversation

work booklet. Jeremy’s initiative was to install

yellow tables in the school grounds to

encourage and remind students to talk and ask

the question everyday.

Jeremy was nominated for the award by his

Year Adviser. Miss Leet and accepted the

award in a COVID-19 safe ceremony, over

Zoom, on 22 April 2021.

Student Recognised The Young Conversation Champion Award—Jeremy Millward Year 11

Principal, Mrs Holmes said, “Jeremy came to

our Positive Behaviour for Success team last

year to ask if he could organise a whole week

of school activities to raise awareness for R U

OK day”.

Jeremy was committed to his initiative and

worked tirelessly with staff to ensure that he

communicated it effectively to the school

community and had engaging activities for all

students to understand the importance of

simply asking their peers if they are OK.

The message from Jeremy is “You should

always ask your mates if they are ok, and

check on them. If you are feeling down about

something, it is never going to help if you keep

it in; you have to get it off your chest.”

Jeremy is looking to help organise another R U

OK? Week with a variety of different activities

for our staff and students to participate in this

year.

Conversation Champion Award: The late

Barbara Hocking OAM was ne of Australia’s

leading advocates for people affected by

In the April holidays I journeyed to Launceston in Tasmania to compete in the u18s Australian Hockey

tournament which was held over nine days. We travelled with a coach, assistant coach, manager and

physio with girls from all over NSW in the team. Our first game was expected to be a tough one as we

were playing Queensland who were the eventual national champions. They scored three very quick

goals resulting in us being down 3-0 at quarter time. In the second quarter we gave it back to them

scoring two goals which came as a shock to QLD. The game ended up being 5-2 with the score not

reflecting how well we played. Over the duration of the tournament we also played Northern Territory,

ACT, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania. As a very young team (being the second NSW team and

having six first year under 18s) we were happy with our overall result playing Tasmania in the play off

for 5th and 6th. We ended up losing that game in the last 30 seconds as they scored off a short corner.

Our final ranking meant that we beat the first NSW team and have been one of few NSW Blues teams

to achieve this. I enjoyed the tournament and learnt much from the talent that surrounded me.

Hopefully I can secure a place in the first NSW state team in 2022 which will take place in either

Queensland or Western Australia.

After a few rounds of soccer trials that were full of talent, sixteen of Moss Vale High’s fittest boarded the bus and headed to cold Crookwell for round 2 of the Bill Turner Cup. Our Junior Girls had a solid carpool karaoke going on for the bus trip, psyching themselves for 10 degrees, pouring rain and a skin-splitting wind. It was a tough game across the park, Crookwell proved to be heavy opposition in some really trying conditions. Natasha Hamilton broke away and put a strong shot in to the net behind a very competent goalie from Crookwell about ten minutes before half time. The half time pep talk spoke of consistency and communication - both of which our team addressed in the second half. Natasha found the net again, but so did Crookwell and it shook our team well. After a lot of great soccer by both teams, Emma Turner went out guns blazing from the bench. Nicole Harper got us out of a real sticky spot, a tricky ball straight to Emma’s feet at half way. She took it all the way to the net. Impressive. With five mins left and the score board reading 3-1, Ash Wilson found the net too with a shot from the eighteen yard box, surprising herself but no one else, great goal! Notable mentions also have to go to Tess Stanley and Abbey Wallace for their consistency in all aspects of the game. It was an awesome effort from the whole team. Their behaviour, sportsmanship and resilience in the conditions and throughout the day was flawless. Congratulations girls on your excellent representation of Moss Vale High School. Bring on Round 3! SUPPORT UNIT UPDATE –

ATHLETICS CARNIVAL 2021 This year our Support Unit students exceeded our expectations with their participation in Moss

Vale High School’s 2021 Athletics Carnival held on Tuesday 27 April. The glorious weather

assisted our students and supervising teachers to enjoy a day of being active, supporting one

another and having a go! We are so very proud of the participation and sportsmanship of our

students with many competing in most, if not all the events and accumulating valuable points

towards their individual house groups. We also had several students achieve some outstanding

results competing against mainstream students in their age group races and events. With the

wonderful coaching of Mr Jim Good during our PE Practical lessons leading up to the carnival,

students were given the opportunity to master technique, and to familiarise and prepare

themselves to strive for their personal best on the day.

PARTICIPATION

The Support Unit can be very proud of their considerable individual contributions towards the

Athletics Carnival house group points for participation on the day in the majority of events and

races including serious/non-serious and novelty events.

Here is a breakdown of the overall House Point contribution. What a superb effort!

Gibraltar (Blue) – 8 points
