President Janie Tripp

The Belted Galloway Foundation, Inc. met in March and they contacted me asking me to establish a Belted Galloway Junior Association region for the Kathi Jurkowski Belted Galloway National Show. The Kathi Jurkowski National Show will operate like all other Belted

Galloway Junior Association regional groups raising their own funds and paying all expenses and premiums. The region will be able to apply for funding from the Belted Galloway Foundation. I will be meeting with the BGJA committee and we will be establishing a plan to generate funding for the show in 2020.

I have been working with Executive Director, Vic Eggleston, to plan the Spring Council Meeting via teleconference. Committees are currently meeting to give their reports to Council during the meeting.

I hesitate to mention it again because I think every person in the United States is tired of hearing about COVID19, but its impact has put a lurch in the cattle industry as a result. Markets are down, processing plants are closed, and during the first quarter of 2020, livestock shows were cancelled. The reality is that it is all out of our control.

Body Condition at Calving counts!by Jayde Reilly, Editor

Observing your cattle’s body condition score (BCS) should be a part of a routine at your farm or ranch. BCS enables you to quickly identify the nutritional needs of your cattle based on their physical appearance. As your herd endures each season and stage of production, there will be times when your herd’s BCS will change. The goal is to maintain a BCS of five.

As productive beef operations, we ask for a lot out of our cows. We ask them to endure calving, be productive in her lactation and get rebred all in the same three to four months. This demanding period of the cow’s cycle can be stressful. It is important to pay special attention to her BCS as she comes into calving and begins raising her calf. Her BCS during this time period will effect not only her ability to raise a vivacious calf but also the length of time between calving and her first heat and her conception rate. Below is a table (Table 1) explaining how taking your herd from a BCS of 4 to a BCS of 5 at calving will prove to be profitable based on pregnancy rates alone.

Effects of Pregnancy Rate- based on 100 cowsRanch A

World Galloway Congress- Rescheduledby Jon Bednarski, World Galloway Congress President

The Belted Galloway Society’s Council made the difficult de-cision at their Spring Meeting on May 6th to reschedule the World Galloway Congress to November of 2021.

The unanimous vote was made from feedback received from both US and international delegates. Concerns were expressed over additional flare-ups of the coronavirus later this year, possible quarantines, travel restrictions and bans. With many venues, events and fairs being closed or canceled, it would have been difficult to provide a World Galloway Congress that delegates have come to expect. For those who had already paid and registered, a full refund is available or your funds can be transferred to the 2021 Congress. For updates you can visit the website at www.worldgallowaycongressusa2020.com

Belted Galloway journal- Postponedby Jon Bednarski, Promotion & Advertising Committee Chairman

The Promotion and Advertising Committee along with a vote from BGS Council have decided to postpone production of the Journal for 2020. With plans to have a World Galloway Congress section featuring the farms, venues and events it was a logical decision with rescheduling the WGC to 2021. Also considered were hardships that farmers and ranchers are facing this year during the COVID-19 pandemic. We hope that our members and advertisers will come back in 2021 with more support for the publication.

New England Galloway Group Heifer Projectby Heidi Baker, NEGG President

The New England Galloway Group’s Heifer Project places a Belted Galloway heifer calf with a deserving youth recipient on an annual basis. The intent of this project is to allow hands-on education in cattle rearing and showmanship and to develop a love of the breed. The youth selected to receive a heifer is expected to return the first heifer calf back to the program so it will continue each year. The Heifer Project Recipient was Adam Eaton (ME), and was awarded the heifer from Elizabeth Eaton (ME). More info: https://www.beltedgallowaygroup.com/heifer-project

The Belted Galloway Journal is an annual publication of the Belted Galloway Society. The Journal has become the breed’s most valuable marketing literature! Picturing Sale Cattleby Jayde Reilly, Editor

Picture day may be one of the most stressful days on the farm (it is at our place at least.) All of your longnights and early mornings in the barn calving/lambing/farrowing out the matings that you have waited (what seems like) forever are now on the ground and has led to this moment... anxiety is high! Below you will read some of my (and other industry experts’) tips and tricks to get you through picture day “stress-free.”

LocationThe ideal location to set up your picture pen is somewhere with green, well maintained grass and a nice fence. Be aware of your backdrop as it can be distracting to those looking at your pictures! For cattle, your picture pen should be about 100 ft x 60 ft with a slight gradient. When setting up your picture pen, keep in mind the photographer will keep the sun behind them when picturing your cattle in the early morning or late afternoon.

PreparationTo ease the potential stress of running out of time on picture day, try to be as prepared as possible. Have most of the clipping, grooming and other prep done before picture day to ensure your stock are willing to cooperate with you for as long as possible.

The TeamThis may be the most important piece to the whole day! Your picture day team is essential to the success of the day. In addition to the crew in the barn preparing the cattle, you also need to round up pen help. In the picture pen, your photographer will need an attention-getter and 1-2 pushers/handlers. A good crew in the pen will make or break your picture day.

Be FlexibleI cannot stress this last point enough.... be flexible. I can almost guarantee that something will go wrong, even with the most articulate planning. If you go into the day with a flexible state of mind, I promiseyour picture day will go much smoother than the alternative.

There are many great livestock photographers in the across the country who are eager to help you market your livestock. Feel free to contact me for photographer recommendations for your area!
