FREUDENBERGFILTRATION TECHNOLOGIES

The first automobile model to feature a cabin air filter as stan-dard was presented in 1989: the Mercedes-Benz SL Roadster. A sensation. In 1991, the Opel Astra became the first model for the mass market to feature the micronAir® cabin air filter as standard equipment. 30 years later, the success story just keeps on going.

In the 1950s, the chauffeur of CEO Hans Freudenberg stretched a piece of Freudenberg nonwoven fabric over the air intake of his car to protect his clothes from dirt. At the time, it was impossible to foresee that this would be the spark that would ignite an entire industry sector. And yet the market launch of the Viledon® filter mat in 1957 formed the basis for the subsequent development.

< CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 Health protection: an export hit

Today, cabin air filters are fitted as standard in all vehicles. It is hard to imagine that this type of component did not even exist 30 years ago. “The micronAir® filter was the first product to noticeably improve air quality in the vehicle interior”, explains Dr. Heinz Re-inhardt, head of Applications Technology at the time of the mar-ket launch. Armin Tritsch was also instrumental in establishing the product and led the first sales offensive in those days. Looking back, he recalls: “We achieved our breakthrough with the series specification of the Opel Astra. We were certain that the major health benefits offered by this revolutionary product would reach the mass market.” And they did – at an impressive speed. In 1989, 35,000 units of the micronAir® filter rolled off the assembly line. By 1993, 3.6 million filters had already been sold – with a strong upward trend.

Fast-track innovation

“We literally started from scratch. There was no market, no guide-lines and no experience with product development”, Tritsch points out. All the more astonishing that the product was scaled up for mass production within two years. The pace never slowed down. In 1993, work began on an activated carbon filter, which celebrated its premiere two years later as a combi filter. The major achieve-ment of the micronAir® filters was that they could be individually adapted to customer requirements from the outset. In 2016, the micronAir® proTect line was first presented. This filter type is par-ticularly suitable for allergy sufferers and sensitive individuals. The latest innovation is the micronAir® Gas Shield activated carbon modules for cabin air filters. Since early 2019, the various mixtures have offered targeted protection against specific pollutants – from nitrogen and sulfur dioxide to ammonia, ozone and aldehydes.

The secret: intensive customer dialog

Over the past 30 years, lively exchanges with industry, research in-stitutes, regulatory authorities and the public have proven to be the driving force underlying this success. Volker Bräunling, then part of the development team and now Regional Director Europe, sees this as one of the core tasks for the future: “Today, we are at the beginning of a mobility revolution. New mobility concepts and electric vehicles are opening up unprecedented opportunities. That is why it is more important than ever to engage in an inten-sive exchange with our customers and to understand their needs. This is how we will be able to continue writing this success story over the next 30 years.”

GAS TURBINES AND COMPRESSORS

THE FILTER SURFACE MAKES THE DIFFERENCENEW MVPGT-L CASSETTE FILTERS IMPRESS WITH THEIR LONG SERVICE LIFE AND HIGH PERFORMANCE

Frequent air filter changes are costly and resource-intensive. This is why service life is an essential factor for the econom-ical operation of gas turbines and com-pressors in power plants and in the oil and gas industry.

The figures speak for themselves. Every MVPGT-L has a filter area of 30 m2. This gives the cassette filter a long service life while maintaining consistently low pres-sure differential values. The stable and leak-free design of the housing also pre-vents dust from penetrating during oper-ation – and protects turbines and com-pressors from contamination and sub-sequent damage. The filter is equipped with a burst protection grid to minimize the risk of damage during operation.

Quick and safe replacement – thanks to easy handling

The design of the MVPGT-L filter allows easy and uncomplicated installation. Available as an option is the patented Viledon® Modular Clip-On System for 2-in-1 solutions. This allows a prefilter to be easily attached to the main filter – with minimal space requirements.

Paint drying often involves high tempera-tures. At temperatures up to approx. 250°C, air filter elements are subjected to high loads. In critical areas where, for example, dip coatings containing tin are used, the components are subjected to additional stress by condensates. With the Viledon® Duo Safe HT, long service lives and maxi-mum safety can be achieved even in such harsh environments. The filter shows its strengths particularly in heavily loaded and highly critical circulating air systems for paint drying processes.

Easy prefilter replacement ensures economical operation

Practical: The proven HiTemp cassette filter is combined with a Duo Safe prefil-ter. The fiber glass medium folded using minipleat technology protects the filter from excessive contamination. This allows the prefilter to be changed several times

in the event of heavy loading without hav-ing to remove the main filter. This can be done in a matter of minutes without the need for tools. This extends service life and thereby enables economical operation of the air filter system.

CLEANROOMS & PHARMA

STERILE ZONETHAT IS WHAT ISO 16890 MEANS FOR THE PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY

In the production of medical active ingredients, hygiene has the highest priority. Air qual-ity is a decisive factor in this area. The ISO 16890 test standard makes it easier for manu-facturers to precisely tailor filtration systems to their requirements.

Whether for power plants close to the coast or for urban produc-tion, the challenges facing multi-stage filtration systems vary considerably. The main factors are process requirements as well as local air quality and composition. With its extended function-alities, e.FFECT supports the planning process.

excluded. From a hygiene perspective, the particle fractions PM10 and PM2,5 are more relevant than PM1. Filtration systems should therefore be designed to separate the ISO ePM2,5 spectrum as completely as possible.

Multi-stage systems for maximum safety and efficiency

When planning the system, the aim is to achieve the defined de-gree of efficiency as energy-efficiently as possible. In practice, multi-stage concepts consisting of matched filter elements are proving successful in the pharmaceutical industry. For example, two-stage prefiltration using pocket and cassette filters followed by a HEPA filter for the finest particles and germs. As a general rule, the ideal filtration solution is always individually tailored.

The e.FFECT software tool uses scientific data on ambient air and filter data according to ISO 16890 to determine the most efficient filtration solution based on specific customer requirements. Since its introduction, the analysis functions of e.FFECT have been con-tinuously enhanced. For example, the software can calculate the initial pressure drop for a multi-stage filter system. For gas tur-bines and compressors, it is also possible to determine the aver-age performance drop in relation to dust input. Work in progress at the moment includes a function for calculating energy con-sumption. In short, the optimization options offered by e.FFECT are more extensive than ever.

For pharmaceutical manufacturers, contamination of drugs would be a disaster. The reliable separation of particles, spores and harmful germs from the ambient air is therefore an absolute must. ISO 16890 classifies filters according to particulate matter classes PM1, PM2,5 and PM10 as well as coarse dust (ISO coarse) and provides information on their true filtration behavior along the entire particle spectrum. The actual operating conditions are also given greater consideration.

Needs-based filtration thanks to ISO 16890

For system planners, this means that filters can be precisely matched to the process requirements. HVAC systems, air filters and air filter stages must be designed in such a way that contam-ination by microorganisms and harmful particles is completely

Ideally positioned for the future

The membrane bioreactor can treat around 450 m3 of wastewater per day. At the same time, the plant runs completely automatically. Continuous monitoring means that changes can be reacted to immediately and water quality can be permanently ensured. Phil Lynch, Busi-ness Development Manager at Aquabio, explained: “The system has a modu-lar design. It can therefore be flexibly adapted to the respective requirements. Retrofitting to cope with higher capac-ities is effortless. This makes the plant extremely sustainable and economical.”

Glenmorangie has been distilling its fa-mous single malt whiskey in Tain, Northern Scotland, since 1843. Before being sold, it is stored for at least ten, sometimes even 25 years. Long-term thinking is there-fore deeply rooted in the company. This is one reason why the responsible use of resources and environmental protection play an important role. When purifying their wastewater, the company placed its trust in the knowledge and experience of Viledon® Water Solutions.

Using bacteria to combat impurities

The ideal solution was quickly found: an anaerobic membrane bioreactor was identified as the most suitable solution for the distillery. The so-called low-en-ergy AnMBR LE™ purifies the waste-water by treating it and feeding it into a bioreactor. Bacteria then decompose the biomass. Subsequently, the water is separated from the biomass by an ul-trafiltration tube membrane. The result is pure water treated in a cost-efficient manner. One plus point is that the bio-mass provides additional energy that can be used for production. This contrib-utes to Glenmorangie achieving its am-bitious sustainability goals.

The efficiency of dedusting systems depends on the differential pressure of the filter elements. The higher the differential pres-sure, the lower the performance. The intelligent Freudenberg PulseWatch control unit makes it easy to optimize cleaning cycles.

The Freudenberg PulseWatch continuously checks the differential pressure of the filter system. Depending on the development of the differential pressure, it automatically adjusts the dedusting parameters to ensure maximum system efficiency. The dedust-ing threshold is always based on the current condition of the fil-ter cartridge. Because compressed air dedusting only takes place when required, plant availability increases. The start settings of the measuring intervals and alarm thresholds can be individually adjusted. The Freudenberg PulseWatch is also easy to install. And because it is insensitive to vibrations, it can also be used in the harshest industrial environments.
