Mark Partin

Sylv ia Lawler , longtime resident of the Heart of Sumter Neighborhood, passed away on January 1st after a struggle with cancer. For more than 25 years, Sylvia and Jim were active in the neighborhood asso-ciation, serving as treasurer and membership chair-man, for most of those years. Even if you did not know Sylvia personally, you knew her as the one who took your membership money! She will be missed by her many friends, her neighbors on Harby Avenue and the Heart of Sumter Neighborhood Association Board.

Mark Partin has been a Sumter resident since 1992. He was born in Sumter but grew up in Conway, SC. He and his wife Gayla moved to the Heart of Sumter neighborhood in 2018. Mark is the Organizational Improvement Director for the City of Sumter. He currently serves on the boards of Tandem Health and the YMCA in Sumter. Mark and Gayla enjoy walking around the Heart of Sumter neighborhood tak-ing in the beautiful architecture and meeting all their wonderful neigh-

bors. Mark and Gayla have a daughter Jenna, son-in-law Mat-thew, and granddaughter Addie, who also live in the Heart of Sumter.

Monday, June 3 , 2019 - 6 :00pm to 8:00pm Thank you for your feedback so far. Join us for a presentation of recommendations,

based upon the public's feedback on how to develop downtown Sumter.

It is my great honor to serve as the new President of the Heart of Sumter

Neighborhood Association Board. Your neighborhood association is coming off a great 2018 and we have an exciting 2019 in store. The purpose of the HSNA is to enhance the quality of life in our area and work to strengthen community ties throughout Sumter. Here are just a few of the events and projects that we worked on this past year. We continue to foster our close relationship with Willow Drive Elementary School. Our members provide cookies and other treats for the monthly staff meetings and we continue our annual tradition of donating educational items at Christmas time. We also partner with the Council of Garden Clubs of Sumter to keep the school grounds looking sharp. The HSNA Board understands that the Association accomplishes the most when it partners with other groups and organizations and helps support activi-ties. Our partners this past year included the Sumter County Cultural Commis-sion, the Sumter Gallery of Art, the Sumter Artists Guild, the Council of Garden Clubs and the Sumter County Library among others. Together we were able to bring to our neighborhood the June Soire e with the Charleston Civic Orchestra, both the Spring Garden and the Holiday home tours, award-winning artists and top-quality arts shows, and the Forrest Ray 5K. In March we worked with the Cultural Commission to bring color and fun to Patriot Hall with the Yarn Explosion event. Probably our biggest event is the Annual Art in the Park festival we hold every fall in the very heart of the Heart of Sumter, Memorial Park. Thanks to the support of our community sponsors and the tremendous response of all the visitors who came from both far and near, this event is bigger and better every year. Not only does this event bring a world-class art festival to out neighborhood but because of your generos-ity we are able to provide financial help to nonprofit community organizations who truly make our neigh-borhood better. In the next several weeks and months, you will see more activity from the HSNA. Please let us know your ideas for how your neighborhood association can make the Heart of Sumter the very best part of Sumter.

Special thanks go to Mary Gene White, Debbie Jackson, Malley Jennings and Annette Doyle who have faithfully supplied goodies

to the Willow Drive teachers once a month this year for their staff meetings. They will also be treated to a pulled pork luncheon on the last day of classes. We love our Willow Drive School!
