elcome spring, long awaited! We are so happy to have the sunshine and blue skies, spiced with a few cooler days with rain to bring out the blossoms, but Mother Nature can keep the heavy pollen that

appears to bother so many. But it is certainly not keeping down enthusiasm for the Designer House & Gardens!

Congratulations to Barbara Ann Price, Chair, Cleta Szoke, her assistant, and ALL those who have been working on this year’s magnificent project. If you attended the Gala on April 28, chaired by Joy Levy and Kim Calabrese, you experienced a spectacular evening of perfect weather, delicious food from CRAVE Events Group, a never-ending variety of beverages, music from the popular band The Chatterband and a house and gardens that shimmered like a jewel in the night. What an evening! Kudos to Joy, Kim and their team for a job well done. I am praying for a successful month ahead.

If you haven’t signed up to volunteer at the house, please do so. We ask, as your VIA member responsibility, that you commit to at least two shifts for the month. Hundreds of volunteers are needed to support the hours of operation, so please be as generous as you can with your time.

We almost had a big glitch in our success, but our friend and member, PA State Representative Marguerite Quinn, stepped in with Harrisburg, PennDOT and Buckingham Township to delay paving that was to take place on Burnt House Hill Road, right in the midst of our biggest fundraiser of the year! We cannot thank you enough, Marguerite. And in her words, ‘thank and hug' a PennDOT worker and show your appreciation!

I am very proud to say our nominee Marguerite Quinn has been selected to receive the Village Improvement Association/ Women in Business Award to be awarded on June 1.

VIA Treasurer’s Report Ruth Carlson

For month ending Mar 31, ‘17 Feb 28, ‘17

Current Assets $75,614 $74,856

Long Term Assets $303,643 $301,921

Total Assets $379,257 $376,778

Income YTD $54,914 $52,456

Expenses YTD $31,239 $30,905

Change In Net Assets $23,675 $21,550

From the VIA President Continued from pg. 1 Congratulations to the winner of our first 50 – 50 drawing, LeeAnn Hill of Perkasie! She will receive a check for $1,160! And we will add the other 50% (also $1,160) to our income for the year. Please don’t forget we have a second drawing that will end on June 6 following our annual meeting.

By the time this comes out, we will have held our 2nd Evening Meeting, this time at the Designer House & Gardens. We hope it will be as big a success as our last event in October. We will be hosting more of the same next year.

Hard to believe, but Memorial Day will be here soon, and the chance to march in the Memorial Day Parade. If you are interested, we ALWAYS have fun, waving to the crowd and receiving their appreciation. As usual, we will have our bus following the walkers. If interested, please contact Joyce Hanson via email at [email protected].

I am so pleased to announce that we now have the ability to pay online for many of our member activities such as membership dues, the June luncheon and more. To do so, go to the VIA website (VIA-Doylestown.org) to the Membership tab, then open Membership Information. You will find several items listed with the opportunity to Buy Now. We will try to put all our payable events online for your

convenience (there is a small fee for this). OR you can always pay by check or cash.

Speaking of dues, our Strategic Planning group uncovered a surprise in our Policies. If a member’s dues are not paid by June 30, the member forfeits the right to vote for the entire following fiscal year. DON’T lose your voice! Pay on or before the June meeting!

Thanks to all who supported the UNO’s event, and to Mary Jane Mims who ran it.

Another event to watch for is a Family Games night, tentatively scheduled for Sept. 24. Please don’t forget the September 13 fundraising night at Town & Country Theater, to enjoy the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (see pg. 9). There is SO much going on, as we wind down this year and get ready to start up the next.

Unfortunately, I continue to hear from any number of our members that they, their spouses or children are having health challenges, some very major issues. Please keep them all in your prayers.

I hope to see you all at the June Luncheon. Sign up now, if you haven’t already! Until next time, I wish you a happy and healthy spring and summer!

VIA Health System Report Joan Parlee, Chairman of the Boards

The flowers and trees are lovely! We are so fortunate to live in this beautiful place in the world!

This month we had a presentation by Doctors Szekely and Acharya on the Intensivist Program. This is a 24-hour 365-day coverage of medical and cardiac patients in the Intensive Care Unit by board certified critical care specialists. The high level of specialty care at Doylestown Hospital requires these new standards. A key feature is the multidisciplinary rounds performed each day on each patient by physicians, nurses, specialists, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, case management, physical therapists and infection control. This allows for wonderful, complete education and communication with all involved, including patient and family. The Intensivist model at Doylestown also permits the doctors to have independent practices and to still see their patients in the community.

The Clinical Quality report highlighted innovations now in place through the Doylestown Healthcare Partnership (DHP). eClinicalWorks is a new community-based outpatient electronic medical record which will replace our current outpatient system – NextGen. Installation of the new eClinicalWorks system will begin this summer and will enhance DHP physicians’ access to every patient encounter within the DHP network.

The first item covered under Patient Safety was the Stroke Program. Since 2013, Emergency Medical personnel notify the Emergency Department early when they are transporting a stroke patient. These alerts are now at 80%. Therefore, door to stroke alert, door to CAT scan read, and door to drug times have improved. Doylestown Hospital has achieved Gold Award status of the Get with the Guidelines Stroke Achievement Program. The Septic Shock Alert Program was recently started at Doylestown Hospital to increase awareness to screen and treat for septic shock. The Code Crimson protocol was recently updated. Code Crimson is a verbal code when a severe postpartum

hemorrhage occurs. Finally, under Patient Safety, the Broselow Bracelet initiative for Pediatrics was discussed. I have mentioned this in a previous report. A color-coded bracelet is placed on a child, based on the child’s weight. In the case of an emergency, the color code ensures use of the matching color code on medications and for equipment size.

The financial results for the Hospital show a net operating gain of $1.9M. Year-to-Date Net Patient Revenue is $184.8M, an increase of 5.6% over FY2016. Expenses were 5% over the prior year. Pine Run results were negative to budget. Investments have improved $6.5M since 6/16. All bond covenants were met.

The Medical Executive Committee has been working for over a year in an effort to create a committee structure which better reflects the specialties and clinical practice in 2017. This resulted in a change from department based representation to service line representation. The Bylaw changes were reviewed and approved by the Medical Staff, the Hospital Bylaws Committee and the Hospital Board.

Seven new physicians were awarded privileges, one in Plastic Surgery and two each in Internal Medicine, Cardiology, and Oral Surgery. There were two Allied Health Practitioners added in Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery.

In addition to the new Leapfrog “A” award, the Joint Commission reviewers identified “multiple, leading, innovative practices” in our Heart Failure program and issued a wonderful review. The Surgery Center had a deficiency-free licensure survey. Let us congratulate everyone on the achievement of these fantastic results!

Committee Updates VIA 125th Anniversary Committee Joyce Hanson

LOOKING AND PLANNING AHEAD!

On April 26, 2020, we will be celebrating the 125th anniversary of the Village Improvement Association of Doylestown. It sounds so far away, but not when you are planning to celebrate such an important milestone. We believe those 14 ladies who founded the VIA in 1895 would be very proud of all we have done and what we do today.

A planning committee has been formed and is currently brainstorming ideas about how we can acknowledge such an important event in our history. We invite all VIA members to share ideas about ways in which we can recognize this milestone. Please email your suggestions to Joyce Hanson at [email protected] or jot them down on paper and leave it for Joyce the VIA office.

2017 Designer House Barbara Ann Price

After two months of creative design work by our Designers and Landscapers, the 2017 Bucks County Designer House & Gardens opened its doors on Friday, April 28 with a Preview Gala attended by 540 guests and volunteers, including almost twenty mothers and daughters from the National Charity League. Guests walked along a lovely "Red Carpet" walkway to the carpeted tent provided by Bucks-Mont Party Rentals. Servers from Crave Event Group flanked the walk with glasses of champagne during the VIP Sponsor cocktail hour and everyone enjoyed the food, beverages and outstanding floral displays by Crave. The Chatterband entertained with soft music early in the evening and then the dancing began! Everyone enjoyed the great summer-like weather. All five boutiques were

busy with customers all night. We thank Jean Upton for providing us with the great weather for the Gala! We also thank Joy Levy and Kim Calabrese along with all of the members of the Gala Committee for an outstanding evening. The attention to detail was astounding. The Designer House received rave reviews from our attendees.

Media day was covered by the Intelligencer, Bucks County Herald along with Chanel 69 news from Allentown. The TV segment is posted on our Designer House Website.

We received good news from Marguerite Quinn: the road repairs to Burnt House Hill Road will start in June after the Designer House closes. Thank you, Marguerite, for your help with this issue.

The house opened on Sunday, April 30 with 126 guests. Everyone enjoyed the house along with all of the landscape areas.

We hosted a VIA night on May 9 from 6 to 8 pm, for anyone interested in joining the VIA. Guests viewed the gardens at the Designer House and obtained first-hand information about the VIA.

Wellness Wednesdays will take place on May 10 and May 24 from 11 am to 1 pm.

Join Doylestown Health professionals for FREE cholesterol and glucose screenings, health information, giveaways and more! The Doylestown Health tent will be on the grounds of the Designer House, and all are invited to visit us before or after their house tour.

Meet the Designers is scheduled for May 11 from 4 to 6 pm. Please plan to join us to meet our wonderful Designers and Landscapers in person. It is a great opportunity to meet the Designer’s and obtain design insights.

On Sunday, May 14 Mother’s Day, from noon to 4 pm, Boardroom Spirits will offer free tastings in the Wine Cellar of the Designer House.

A Salute to the Troops will take place Memorial Day weekend May 27 and 28. There will be free House Tours for Military Members/Veterans and ½ price for one companion.

We still need a lot of volunteers for this year’s Designer House. Positions are still available for the Café, Captains, Guides, Designer Sales, and Watering. Please sign up for as many shifts as you are able. Please be generous with your time for this year’s event. You can sign up at BucksCountyDesignerHouse.org or if you need help, contact LaFaun Reed Kahn at [email protected] and she will be more than happy to help you. If you do sign up for a shift please plan to remain for the entire time you are scheduled and if for some important reason you are unable to make your shift please try to obtain a replacement.

Fundraising Cory H. Schroeder

50/50 Raffle

On May 2 we held our drawing for the first of two 50/50 Raffles. We sold 232 of 400 tickets available resulting in a check for $1,160 for winner LeeAnn Hill of Perkasie and $1,160 toward our fundraising revenue for the year. Please don’t forget we have a second drawing that will end on June 6 following our annual meeting. There are still tickets available (in the Hospital Gift Shop, at our June meeting, through the VIA office and at the Designer House. The jackpot continues to grow! Only 400 tickets will be sold and based upon the total sales, you may win up to $2,000! Tickets are $10 each.

Chocolate Basket For Mom

The Fundraising Committee held a Gift Basket Raffle for Mother’s Day at the May meeting. Proceeds were $65.

Day At UNO’S

Once again, thanks to everyone who supported the UNO’s fundraiser as participants and/or volunteers. Through this event, $340 was raised. We will be holding another event with them in Oct - date TBA!

Family Games Night

Keep watch for the Family Games night, tentatively scheduled for Sept. 24. Fashioned on the concept of the Conservation Committee’s Card Party, singles, couples and families can enjoy a few hours playing board games of their own or ours. Lite fare and prizes will be available.

James-Lorah Memorial Home Helen Hammes

House Preservation Work

The remaining work at the back of the house will start in May.

Security Upgrade – Holicong Security

The security and fire alarm upgrades will cost $3,985. The video surveillance system will cost $3,595. These upgrades are categorized as safety/security for the house.

May 2017

House Boundaries – Status

Pat Cavanaugh, surveyor, is doing additional research and a meeting will be scheduled in May to go over all the information.

Kitchen Upgrade

An overview of the work needed to be done was given to the committee. A budget for all work would be at least $30-40,000 (new flooring, new cabinets, painting, plumbing and electrical work). Each item was discussed and the committee was satisfied this was the prudent approach to take. For example, repainting the cabinets is not possible due to the lacquer on the cabinets. Custom cabinets were proposed for durability and the expectation of lasting another 50 years. It was agreed that this project has moved to a longer term goal. In the short term, the cost of painting the walls will be pursued to refresh its appearance.

Designer House Prints

A solution was found to hang all 42 Designer House prints and the hanger system totals @$600. Sufficient inventory will be purchased to cover prints for future years.

House Events 2017

A Christmas Open House Tour is scheduled for Sunday, December 10. Stay tuned for a major announcement!

Tickets for the September 13 Town & Country Theater fundraiser will be sold at the June VIA meeting.

Book Collection

Discussion regarding the sale of all or part of the book collection continued this past month. Several auction houses were contacted. Further details for an auction process will be pursued with both these vendors by the History & Antiques/Records Preservation Committee.

Fundraising

Treasured Legacy book sales will continue at the Doylestown Book Store and be added at Fonthill and Mercer Museum. The cost is $25/book and JLMH will net $20/book.

VIA Memorial Garden

The library no longer accepts book donations as memorials since the books are loaned to other libraries. Therefore, a new plan to honor deceased VIA members was created. The VIA Board approved an area on the JLMH grounds to serve as a VIA Memorial Garden. The exact location is being explored and plans will be made for specific plantings and a plaque identifying it as a memorial garden.

Marketing Allyson Malack

On May 1, Kimberly Cambra presented video Then, Now & Forever to a group of 17 at the Warminster Library. The presentation generated a tremendous amount of interest for showings at future events and for other groups, thanks to Kimberly. The video presentation kicked off a month-long showcase about the Bucks County Designer House & Gardens in the Library lobby. Using design boards submitted by the 2017 Design Team, the marketing committee created the display. Thanks to the Warminster Library and Renee Stecklein, Doylestown Health Connections, for their support. Please check out our display!

Help us share the VIA story - Volunteers needed!

On May 10 | 2-7 pm, the Central Bucks Chamber of Commerce is holding their Annual Business Expo. The hospital will share their booth at Delaware Valley University with the VIA. This will be a great opportunity to network and recruit new members!

On June 12 | 7 am - 3 pm, the hospital will hold a Wellness Fair for community members and associates on the front lawn of the hospital campus. The VIA is invited to have a table.

Veteran’s Committee Jan Cope

The VIA Veterans Committee recently held its final meeting for the year and chose two more charities to benefit from your generosity. Shamrock Reins is a non-profit started in 2014 to provide free equine-assisted activities and therapies for Veterans, Active Duty & Reserve Service Members, First Responders, their Families, and the Families of Fallen Heroes. They offer a number of programs to help participants who are “reintegrating into civilian life. . . . experiencing difficulties managing the challenges pertaining to pre and post deployment, and for Veterans, Active Duty & Reserve Service Members, and First Responders suffering from PTSD and Traumatic Brain Injury.” The VIA is donating $500 to this exceptional program. (ShamrockReins.org).

The Doylestown American Legion Post 210, which many of you know from the many programs or activities they’ve hosted in the Legion Hall over the years, is the recipient of a second $500 grant. The donation is earmarked to help with their ongoing building maintenance and reconstruction. As their website says, “Since our charter in 1919, A.R. Atkinson, Jr. American Legion Post 210 has been welcoming VETERANS from all branches of our Armed Forces. Today, we continue to welcome all military personnel serving our country.” We will be proud to join them in the 2017 Doylestown Memorial Day Parade, which they help organize and fund each year as part of the United Veterans of Doylestown group. (DoylestownPost210.org).

These donations are in addition to the $2,000 already delivered to the Horsham Air Guard Station, the $500 given to the Washington Crossing National Cemetery, and $350 delivered to the US War Dogs Association. We also use

May 2017

To Enhance the Health & Welfare of Central Bucks County and Surrounding Communities | Page 9

your donations to fund decorations at the YMCA’s annual Veterans Day lunch and to support our Get Well cards at the Hospital and our paperback book mailings to military and veterans hospitals. Our final budget topped $4,300, so THANK YOU for helping us help our service members and veterans. (And remember, we’re always open to new, active members!)

Welfare Committee Marianne Chabot

In March, Welfare Fund committee members received three phone calls from Doylestown Hospital Case Managers requesting funds for prescriptions for two patients being released. The third request was for a car seat and infant clothing for a newborn baby girl. The parents

were in financial need and Mom and baby were ready to be released from the VIA Maternity Center. The VIA Welfare Fund honored these requests.

On April 12th the committee approved a total of 17 referrals amounting to over $1,200 to assist with temporary housing, food, utilities, prescription medicine and baby items.
