ANNOUNCEMENTS & 7-14MILESTONES

I’d like to hear from you and what you think about these changes – it’s important to me to understand what your concerns are. Listening to and making changes based on your feedback is central to our development and success as a team. What do you think of these new leadership appointments? What do you hope this new leadership will bring to the table? Does this type of change make you nervous or uncomfortable? If you have any thoughts or ideas on this topic, please feel free to contact me directly. I also encourage you to share your ideas with your supervisors and coworkers. Through the sharing of ideas and principles, UMIT can be more collaborative and inspire innovative teams to solve problems and identify opportunities together.

As we welcome these new leaders, it is important that we as UMITers continue promoting positive changes, open communication, and an overall sense of teamwork within our department. I look forward to sharing insights and goals created by Dr. Travisano, Theresa, myself, and the rest of the senior leadership team with you all. Lastly – and most importantly – I would like to say thank you for all that you do to support our department and the University of Miami. I am continually encouraged by your dedication and efforts.

In partnership,

Steve

There have been many leadership changes at UM over the past few years, including several new appointments that directly affect UMIT. In March, President Frenk announced that we will be welcoming the new executive vice president for business and finance and chief operating officer (COO),

Jacqueline A. Travisano, Ed.D., to the UM family on Thursday, June 1. Last week, I announced that we will be welcoming a new chief information security officer (CISO), Theresa Semmens, on June 19.

In addition to welcoming Dr. Travisano and Theresa, President Frenk recently announced a new leadership structure at the university. His new leadership team focuses on our three main functions: education, research, and service. To that end, three executive vice presidents will report directly to the president: Dr. Travisano, Dr. Altschuler, and the new provost (to be announced later this summer). Rudy Fernandez will now serve as senior vice president for public affairs and communications, and chief of staff. Patricia Whitely, vice president for student affairs, will now report directly to the president with a dotted line to the new provost. These changes will strengthen the administrative team and align operations in support of the Roadmap to Our New Century.

Although change can be difficult at times, some changes can be very positive – especially those that come with welcoming new leaders who bring fresh perspectives to our organization. With new leadership comes new initiatives, objectives, and opportunities. I look forward to seeing how the university and our department will continue to grow, expand, and transform through collaboration with these new executives and leadership team.

SECURITY FUN FACTSby Krista M. Theodore

Stay Safe Online: Don’t Get Vished!Vishing (a combination of the words “voice” and “phishing”) is the fraudulent practice of attempting to steal information or gain unauthorized access to your personal information via a telephone call. Attackers use a special technique – caller ID spoofing – to make incoming calls look like they are coming from a legitimate or known phone number. For example, you may receive a call from a recognizable number. Upon picking up the phone, you’ll hear a recording or a live representative claiming to provide a service or reward to you. Since the phone number is familiar, you may be more likely to provide answers to questions that seem harmless such as your birth date, favorite color, banking institution, etc. You may even give them access to your computer. While this may seem like a routine or meaningless call, you may in fact have become a victim of vishing. How Can I Protect Myself Against Vishing Attempts? • Be suspicious of all unknown callers. People should be just as suspicious of phone calls as they are

of emails asking for personal information. Some experts suggest letting all calls from unknown callers go to voicemail. Hang up if you are unsure.

• Don’t trust caller ID. Just because your caller ID displays a phone number or name of a legitimate person/company you may recognize, it does not guarantee the call is really coming from that source.

• Verify the identity of the person you are speaking with and check for credentials. If someone is trying to sell you something or is asking for your personal or financial information, ask the caller to identify who they work for. Research the name of the person or the company the person is representing. Ask the person precise questions that may cause the criminal to hang up, if they feel you are on to them. If you feel the call is fraudulent, discontinue the conversation.

• Ask to call back and compare. Tell them you will call them back; then, verify that the company is legitimate as noted above. If it’s a bank or credit card company, call them back using a number from your bill or the back of your credit card.

• Just say no. A legitimate company will never reach out to you to request sensitive information or access to your device. Never provide credit card information or other private information to anyone who calls you.

• Report. Document the call, note what was said and what information was requested, and take down the phone number of the caller (if possible). Report this information as soon as possible to UMIT Security.

Mariano Estrada is graduating from UM with his Master’s in Business Administration, and Nathalie Molina is graduating from FIU with her Master’s in Adult Education and Human Resource Development. This is a significant milestone for both of them. I know from personal experience how difficult it is to balance work, family, and graduate school – but it is an investment that pays off in the long run. Congratulations, Mariano and Nathalie!”

,

Kudos: Lindsi Arrington“On behalf of the Enterprise Resource Planning Group (ERP), we want to send a congratulations to Lindsi Arrington for completing the Global Strategic Communications Creative Track Master’s program at Florida International University and Miami Ad School. Lindsi was part of a two-year thesis program that couples strategic planning with creative campaign building for effective advertising. As a part of the program, Lindsi also spent a summer in New York – taking classes at various ad agencies. Lindsi regularly pitched ideas to real clients and can now apply the understanding that advertising is not just selling a product or service, but rather finding a creative solution to communicate and influence potential consumers. She learned how to leverage the latest technologies and digital strategies for brand development.”
