Chamber member and financial ad-visor Gabriel Lynn, Morgan StanleyWealth Management, will host a long-term care seminar at 10:30 a.m. May 9at the Temple City Chamber of Com-merce, 9050 Las Tunas Drive.

The seminar will focus on how to planfinancially for the possibility of long-term medical care.

In the seminar, Mr. Lynn will discuss:Myth versus fact of long term care; thebasics of long term care; who needs care;what is covered and what is not in Medi-care and Medical on long term care; costsand options to pay for long term care.

According to U.S. Department ofHealth and Human Services, 70% ofpeople turning age 65 can expect to usesome form of long term care during theirlives.

Although almost one-third of today’s

65 years-olds may never need long-termcare support, 20% will need it for longerthan five years.

Yet consumer surveys reveal commonmisunderstandings about which publicprograms pay for long-term care ser-vices. It is important to clearly under-stand what is and isn’t covered by Medi-care and Medical.

Is self-insured long term care right foryou? Mr. Lynn will discuss who shouldnot buy long-term care insurance andwho should consider it.

sists of me and an amazing network ofcousins, I’m super-receptive to adoption. If you didn’t know about cousin adop-tion, we’ve been doing it around hereever since I first smiled at a name on ourschedule.

And in spite of some unfortunatetraining, I’ve yet to discover a great wayto accept deaths in the family.

USC Trojan grad Cousin Herman andwife Beatriz will always be two of my all-time favorite people. Not only did weagree on everything, Herman and I wereboth part of that elite 1% of the Trojanfamily wise enough to call ourselves lib-eral Democrats (so is former USC HeadFootball Coach Pete Carroll.)

When frustrations that come alongwith owning a small service business getme feeling down, all I need to do is bringup Herman’s and Beatriz’ image. Thenit’s easy understanding why the oppor-tunity to serve people who make dignityand class contagious is a blessing. Andblessings don’t come along with pricetags, taxes, or insurance; they’re price-less.

I know deaths in the family leave uswith an emptiness that will remain un-filled. But oh the joy of precious oppor-tunities and friendships unmissed.

Herman, we’ll miss you forever. Butin the spirit of my Sicilian heritage, we’llnever forget.

Q. Emmy, I have three smallIRA’s that I’d like to combineand rollover into a new IRA.

Is this still legal?A. No, it isn’t. Until recently,

combining several IRAs into asingle, newly established IRAwas fairly common practice. The IRS has long held a “once-per-year” rollover rule. But dueto vague wording, this rule wasrarely enforced. The situationhas changed.

In January 2014, the FederalTax Court determined that theIRS can only allow one IRArollover over a 365-day period.Earnest enforcement of this rul-ing began in January.

What you propose wouldconstitute three rollover trans-actions. The first would be per-fectly acceptable and tax free. The following two transfers, ifcompleted within 365 days, could incur taxation and pos-sibly IRS penalties.

There are five exceptions tothis rule:

1. Conversions from a tradi-tional IRA to a Roth IRA

2. IRA rollovers to and fromcompany retirement plans suchas 401(k)s

3. IRA first-time homebuyer distributions when thehome purchase is delayed orcancelled

4. Qualified distributions formilitary reservists that are re-paid on time

5. IRA-to-IRA or Roth IRA-to-Roth IRA direct transfers

In addition, there is a tem-porary transition rule for 2015.Currently, an additional IRArollover may be completedwithin the 365-day blackoutperiod under one circumstanceonly. The present distributionmust not originate from eitherof the IRA accounts that par-ticipated in the previousrollover in 2014.

With these exceptions, youmay be able to achieve your

The simple answer is no.Most trusts drafted by estate

planning attorneys are amend-able and revocable. The mainidea behind a trust is protec-tion. A trust protects your ben-eficiaries in a two major ways.

First, a trust allows you toleave your assets to the peopleyou choose in the manner youdesire. For instance, you canspecify that your underage childwill not inherit until age 30 toprotect him or her from blow-ing his or her inheritance thesecond he or she turns 18 yearsold.

Legal ReportBy Tony J. Tyre, Attorney at Law

The Tyre Agency5703 Temple City Blvd., Temple City.

For more information, phone 626-285-7033or email [email protected].

Will a revocable trust make your life too complicated?

Second, a trust protects ben-eficiaries from the long andcostly probate court process.Without a trust, in many cases, your beneficiaries will be stuck

in the expensive probate courtprocess for approximately ayear, at a minimum, to transfertitle of real property.

However, once a trust is

drafted, will you be stuck goingback to the drafting attorneyand paying expensive fees foreach minor change?

Again, the answer is no.Changing accounts and

property is relatively simple.Buying a new property? Sim-

ply buy the property in thename of your trust and sign alldocuments as “trustee.”

Switching banks? Simplyname the trust as the benefi-ciary of each account - or openthe new account in the name ofthe trust.

Switching a beneficiary? Like

many estate planning attorneys,I include blank amendmentswith my estate plans that willallow you to make simplechanges without paying attor-ney fees.

Although drafting is a com-plicated process for the attor-ney, a trust actually takes littleto no additional effort from theclient. My clients are happilysurprised how simple a trustactually is.

What sellers should know about CMAsWhether you’re selling or buying a home, your real estate pro-

fessional can give you a snapshot of the local market known as thecomparative market analysis or CMA. These are convenient reportsthat help sellers choose a listing price and buyers to make competi-tive offers on a given home.

CMAs are generated from multiple listing service software andvary greatly depending on the search fields input by the realtor.

Each quantifier makes the search increasingly specific: type ofhome (detached vs. attached), zip code, number of bedrooms, bathsand living areas, square footage and numerous other search crite-ria.

The result is a report that tells you which homes have recentlysold, their selling price, how long they were on the market and otherinformation. The CMA will also tell you about homes in competi-tion with yours that are similar in size, price, amenities and loca-tion.

As many fields as there are, some criteria is simply not availablein a CMA. If the MLS has a field for “mountain views,” you willknow. But if not, you will have to learn more from the remarks

The popular local youth basketball develop-ment Play Smarter Class Program is anything butlocal.

For the past 10 years, Coach Richard Marquisof the Play Smarter Basketball Class Program hastraveled throughout Mainland China with par-ents and students of his “Play Smarter” Interna-tional Basketball Camp.

The participating boys and girls learn funda-mentals of the game of basketball from the out-standing coaching staff as they compete through-out Mainland China, from one end to the other, while seeing China at its best.

The “Play Smarter” International and LocalBasketball Camps and Classes were founded byCoach Richard Marquis more than 40 years ago.

These camps have been called the best youthtraining basketball camps and classes heldthroughout the West Coasts and around the worldby such publications as the Sporting News.

For the last nine summers Coach Marquis andhis coaching staff have conducted these campsand competitions across Mainland China.

section filled in by the listing agent. There youmight find “great views” or “mountain views.” Butwho is to say what makes a great view?

When you are looking at properties that sold, you can also learn how long the property took tosell. This is where a Realtor who is a neighbor-hood specialist can be invaluable. He or she mayhave seen these homes while they were beingmarketed and can tell you if they were in condi-tion similar to yours.

One thing a CMA cannot tell you is why a selleragreed to take less for their home or why a buyerpaid over market for another home. Family prob-lems (divorce), corporate relocations, and other

reasons all play a role.If the sale was extremely quick, the seller could

have been highly motivated to take the first offer. If it did not sell quickly, the seller may have over-priced the home.

For these reasons, CMA’s are not exact homevaluations. They are simply tools to be used along-side your real estate professional’s knowledge ofthe market. Your real estate professional will sug-gest a strategy for you based on the CMA, but theasking price will be up to you.

Last, a CMA is only as good as the most cur-rent information. Ask your real estate professionalto keep you abreast of the market with fresh “soldsand new listings” information.

transports veterans of WorldWar II to the National WorldWar II Memorial in Washing-ton, D.C.

Temple City’s own Dan Snellwill board his Honor Flightwith his son on May 8.

The veterans are generallyescorted by volunteer guard-ians, who help them on theflight and around D.C. Afterlanding, the taxiing airplanemay be saluted by fire trucks, and passengers are often met bycheering crowds in D.C. orupon their return flight home.

Organizers are transitioningtheir program to focus on vet-erans of the Korean War, theVietnam War, and subsequentwars as veterans of those warsget older.

Congratulations, Dan Snell. You deserve it for your serviceto this wonderful country.

Shelby is perfect pet for active family with large yard

Shelby is a beautiful 2 ½ year old American Staffordshire terrier who came to the shelter as a stray. Her coat is a gorgeous soft black

that is easy to care for and feels like velvet after she has had a bath. Shelby enjoys going for walks, sniff-

ing and exploring the world around her. Although she is strong, she is responsive to commands and is very manageable on leash.

Shelby likes getting attention and pets from her handler, and is happy to sit or lie down and get a massage or belly rub. She is a very affectionate girl with a lot of love to share.

Shelby recently went to an off-site adoption event, and was friendly greeting new people who approached her and behaved like the sweet girl she is.

Shelby would benefi t from some basic training classes to help her live up to her potential to be a great compan-ion. As a young dog with a lot of energy, a daily walk or run is a must, and a large yard for her to get more exercise would be ideal.

She currently resides at the San Gabriel Valley Humane Society locat-ed at 851 E. Grand Avenue in San Gabriel, off San Gabriel Blvd., north of Mission and south of Las Tunas. To arrange a Meet and Greet with Shelby, please stop by any time from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.

Her adoption fee is $135 which includes her spay surgery, a microchip, fi rst vaccinations and a free wellness check-up at a participating veteri-narian. Phone 626-286-1159 for more information.

The shelter provides animal control and licensing services to Temple City and is the friendly, local choice for low cost spay/neuter and vaccina-tion services for your pet. Check us out at sgvhumane.org for more information about shelter services and photos of all our won-derful adoptable pets.
