ContentsMUSICFEATURE Being fairly fresh on the music

scene local band Penfold seem to be an unknown quantity for me, never having seen them live

I’m basing my initial impression on their 2 online tracks which are available on all the usual soc-net sites.

Only having 2 tracks to listen to might usually have been a difficult thing to base a feature on but when you listen to ‘Before We Fall’ it simply stamps the name Penfold deep inside your brain and you don’t really need to go any further. You don’t really need any words… I just tell people to listen to that one track and they surely can see the potential of these 4 young guys… it simply blew me away. When you first kick off the track it opens with what is usually the typical picking guitar run, then the lumbering bass notes come in over the top and I am immediately thinking… ‘Rock Platform’ all over again… then the guitar changes and it’s like someone just said… F*ck that… your ears prick up and the shout of 1, 2, 3, 4 rings out and the track kicks off in earnest, from then on it is like… WOW…!!!! You stop what you’re doing and just listen, and when it’s done you immediately press play again. It’s simply that damn good.

The 2nd track I listen to was ‘Just One Day’ and, having by now listened to ‘Before we Fall’ a good few times, I was already feeling like I was listening to a properly unique indie rock band and this track has the Penfold stamp all over it, I honestly tried to think of an Indie/rock band to compare them to and I couldn’t (not that I’m an indie/rock specialist so don’t shoot me if there is someone out there that they do sound like) The simple matter is that if you are into really good indie rock then look no further than our very own, AND LOCAL, Pen-fold. There is so much potential oozing from Penfold that the quicker these guys get into the studio and get some more tracks done the better..

Vocalist Thomas Fraser really does have a voice you find yourself drawn to, quite like Kyle from the View but in a warmer manner and not as brashly ‘Scottish’ as his is. Thomas also takes on guitar duties in the Penfold line-up with Calum More also on guitar, Calum Sked on bass and Liam Innes doing a stunning job on drums and backing vocals.

The guys have been gigging hard around the local area supporting Johnny and the Giros and local giants Dead Sea Souls and have also flirted a little bit with Glas/Edin so if you get a chance to see them pop along I’m sure they will blow you away.

Catch up with the guys over at their Facebook page and download their 2 track EP for FREE.

Sometimes, being in love can be the hardest thing, being in love with undis-

covered/unsigned music can be even harder, when you listen and see as many bands as I have, it can get a little jading and it’s easy to become disillusioned as more and more band/artists begin to lose their identity and originality, over time everything can start to sound the same.

Then one day, just when your at your lowest, like when you find yourself watching ‘X Factor’ for

the music… and not for the laughs, something drops through the door or you click on a link someone sent you, or you just somehow find your-self magically drawn to a particular page. You open it up and initially you think… mmmm that’s cool, looks really good… then you find the audio player and for some reason find not 1 album, like a lot of local artists would have, but maybe its 2 albums or on very rare occasions a massive 3…. But wait… you just clicked on the page for Lovers Turn to Mon-sters, and that’s kinda different…!

Lovers Turn to Monsters is the brainchild of 1 man songwriter Kyle Wood, who is currently having a love affair with lo-fi sound and in particular with his old Tascam tape recorder. It’s a rewarding love affair, it’s sometimes hot and steamy, sometimes sad, and it has its ups

and downs like any relationship. In the end though, affairs usually end up as either something wonderful or something disastrous. LTTM’s affair is still going strong at the moment and I would say that it is turning out to be something pretty special so far, if I was Mr Wood I’d be slipping an engagement ring on the finger of his lo-fi mistress before long.

LTTM songs are simple, at times catchy, in others beautiful; others take you to sad places that you had long forgotten about. Although sounding nothing like them I can’t help mentioning The Divine Comedy when I’m listening to the body of work that LTTM has produced over the years. Neil Hannon has a similar knack of producing quirky tunes of the same nature as these, and look what happened to him. Sure these are a tad more sombre in the most

part but hopefully you get where I’m coming from. LTTM produce moments of real tenderness and others of real in-tensity, moments of quiet reflection can flip over to a wall of sound reminiscent of both a stripped back and sometimes full on Jesus and Mary Chain, tiny bits of the Cure are in there and a multitude of other sweet little overtones from other great bands. Not forgetting of course that there are the obvious comparisons to artists like Bright Eyes, whom LTTM includes as an influence.

Acoustic, emo, indie, pop is how Lovers Turn to Monsters describe the music created under that brilliant name, and I wouldn’t argue one bit with any of that but I would challenge anyone, regardless of the type of music they are into, to not find something they liked about what is on offer here, there are so many diverse levels across all the LTTM Albums and EP’s. I’ll tell you what really stands out for me with this artist is his obvious pas-sion for his art. It is not just in the music, it is in the quality of the song writing, and the drive to produce this quantity of really good material so far. More importantly I love the personal nature which comes across in the other areas that seem to be done with the same level of passion as the music; The hand crafted sleeves; the home made tapes, the FREE downloads, the cover albums, the attention to detail that makes view-ing and listening to LTTM a real pleasure and something more akin to browsing the site of an already established/signed artist and a collection of material that some of these artists would perhaps even be a little envious of.

The albums available by LTTM are a mixture of original tracks and amazingly interpreted covers that cross ALL genres (well most anyway). Most, if not all?, tracks are multi-tracked with even the acoustics tracks having low key rhythm tracks and layered vocals etc. Kyle drafts in the odd friend for adding additional in-strumentation as and when required but for the most part it’s just his raw talent on show tracking all the instruments in most of the songs. The only thing that’s miss-ing for me is the lack of any real depth of video ? After listening to LTTM for 2 days solid in preparation for this feature I really want to see lots more stuff on film. There is 1 video included with the down-load of ‘Cars, Bars and Shooting Stars’ which really only fuels the fire for me. I know Kyle from the Breakers days so I can put a face and personality to the music but new people stumbling across the site will no doubt feel the same as me! LTTM have more online content than any other band I know but I still want more, more, MORE..!!!!

Checkout Lovers Turn to Monsters over at their FB page and get yourself some of those FREE albums, then buy the rest of them you definitely won’t be disappoint-ed as it in those that LTTM truly shine.

Sweep Across Hori-zons intrigue me, I always feel that a band that finds

someone who can really do a good job on their vocals is 60% of the way there to being a successful band with real potential to be picked up by a record label. SAH’s Daniel Miller is one of those finds that gives any band a hefty leg up and puts the band directly onto the right track. With Daniel you get a solid vocalist (tick) that fits the music (tick) with the rest of the band you get accom-plished musicians (tick tick tick) and together you get a sound that is not really following any one particu-

lar genre (big TICK). SAH simply produce a massive rock sound that is hard not to enjoy.

There are very distinct flavours of Creed and Nickelback as mentioned in their influences so if you are into those types of bands then SAH are definitely not going to disappoint. Just turn the speakers up loud and let them take you where they wanna take you. I think they have a little harder edge than Nickelback/Creed and a slight leaning towards Pearl Jam in some songs which isn’t as bad thing. But there are a number of bands and genres all flirting away with each other throughout their online tracks which is what we are basing the feature on. Nowhere ac-tually has the full album so you need to put your hands in your pocket if you want the full SAH experience which should be well worth it.

As an example of SAH’s work ‘Clouds’ is a track brimming with technique and great song writing,

it shows a band mature enough not worry about what they ‘should’ be doing and just do it. A dreamy 70s’esque chorus helps the song carry you along on a pleasant jour-ney and then the killer move comes along… a super cool guitar riff, prob-ably the most fitting I’ve listened to in the past 20 years of watching and listening to local bands. It’s not flash, it not technical, it just works brilliantly with the song…. Just a good, good song.

The full SAH line-up is Daniel on Vo-cals/Guitar, Chris Gardner on Drums, James Gordon on Guitar and Gordon Mclachlan on Bass. The band plays regularly around the local and Ed-inburgh area so it shouldn’t be that difficult to get along to see one of their shows.

In 2011 the guys released their de-but Album ‘King of the Skies’, which features 8 tracks recorded over a couple of years.

COVER MODEL FEATURE

Charlie Bailey started modelling when she was around 5 years old but lost touch

with it after moving up here to sunny Scotland.

In 2009 she decided to jump back into it with both feet and entered the local Miss West Lothian com-

petition and making it to the final. The competition gave Charlie the opportunity to meet a lot of people who then helped her rekindle fully and move on the dream she had for years in the back of her mind. Miss West Lothian then led to an entry to the Uber Girl Scotland competition where Charlie successfully made it to the last 150 girls out of 1000’s who entered from across Scotland.

Charlie is currently studying to be a social worker and is currently registered with West Lothian’s first ever modelling agency ‘First Step Models’. Over time she has worked with clients ranging from Nintendo, Sky, LG and Dunfermline Council plus many more.

1: Be on time. Punctuality is crucial, if you are going to be late CALL ahead.

2: Be prepared and take clothing with you that you know fits you. NEVER presume that a photographer will carry everything require for a shoot.

3: Always take your own make-up even if you have been told that there will be a make-up person there.

4. Get as many references as you can from other models and/or assignments that the photographer has been on. Never take any-thing for granted.

5. Get contact details (including addresses if possible) if he/she is hesitant. BEWARE..!!!

6. Make sure you know exactly what the shoot entails, NEVER feel pressured to do anything that you feel uncomfortable doing. Trust you gut instinct.

7. Always carry enough “cash” for travel ex-penses etc. Sometimes ‘suitable’ transportation is not supplied. Always be prepared for the worst case scenario for getting home.

8. Remember that modelling is a business and be prepared to haggle with prospective employers, regarding all details including benefits, pay and content. Don’t just say no, offer to do it for ‘X’ amount or at least try to negotiate better fringe benefits. Always be polite if you can’t work out a situation that benefits you both and always keep in touch as you never know, that person may turn up with your dream job later.

9. Never do anything that you might regret later. Things you do today may very well af-fect your career at some point in the future. A rule of thumb is “If you are posing for a photo that you think you may not be able to show to people and be proud of it… then maybe it isn’t worth doing in the first place”. It isn’t necessarily what other people think of it, it’s really all about whether YOU can be proud of it.

10. If you have a verbal agreement on any expenses etc. Make sure that you follow up on it. Written is always the best course.SAFETY TIP : If you are going to a shoot alone, ALWAYS let someone know where you are and who you are with. Remind the photogra-pher that people are aware of where you are and when you will finish.

Hi... I’m Charlie Bailey.

..

Since I was so young when I first started out I only remember wee bits from being in the studios. When I entered the Miss West Lothian competition I was offered the chance to have a photo shoot in my dress that I wore when competing. It was great to be back in front of the camera. I was so nervous but determined I would impress the photographer. The studio had been set up with hanging baubles which on the pictures looks as if there are lots of shiny balls floating around me. That was so much fun getting in and about them trying out new poses and taking direction and working with it. The images came out great, better than expected as I was nerv-ous the whole way through!

Hi Charlie.... What was your first modelling shoot?

What prompted your interests in becoming a model?I remember going to studios when I was little and remember the excitement I felt from being in front of the camera. Looking back at casting pictures made me realise how much I really enjoyed modelling. At 18 I started thinking that I wanted to get into it again and see where it took me. I had no idea where to start so started applying to agencies. As I’m only 5ft 3 it was hard for me to get noticed so not many agen-cies replied. One did however and for a small price I would be on their books for 3 years. Nothing ever came of it and I was starting to lose all hope when my friend suggested entering the Miss West Lothian competition, I went home and completed the form and that was really the starting point from then on. What kind of modelling are you interested in and why?

I’m interested in fashion and commercial modelling. I’ve enjoyed work-ing with designers in the past and really enjoyed getting the oppor-tunity to model fabulous new clothing. I also really enjoy catwalks its very fun and fast paced! I also really enjoy being a promotional model. I have had the opportunity to work with some great people and grown so much in confidence. After winning my first modelling competition I was lucky enough to model for a salon where my hair style went from long and brown to very short with a rainbow of colours. This was also something I enjoyed and was completely different to any of my shoots because I was working with a horse which was very cool!

It is often said that a model should have a good personality. How would you describe your personality?

I am a really bubbly girl who likes to have fun when I’m working. I’m quite quirky and

love making the best out of every situation. I can take a joke and have a dry sense of

humour. I’m someone that is approachable, true to myself and confident. I don’t believe in being two faced and really enjoy meeting new people and learning about their views

and ideas. I’m am very outgoing and love living my life to the full.

What do you enjoy most about modelling?I love getting out there and meeting new people. I really enjoy having the opportu-

nity to collaborate with photographers and be able to get some great natural looking

images. Modelling gives me the chance to express myself and try lots of different

things. Being one of the first people to model the Spirit of West Lothian Tartan

came a great feeling of pride for my com-munity and after looking back on that was definitely one of my most favourite shoots.

Modelling allows me to be me which is probably the most enjoyable things I find

in modelling.

Describe yourself in three words?Funny, confident and independent.

What’s your best feature?Definitely would have to say my green eyes!

What’s your worst?I don’t think I have a worst feature ha!

I sometimes will get a bit self-conscious about my stretch marks but I wouldn’t call it a worst feature.

How do you unwind?I love unwinding by sitting on the sofa chilling out with my

daughter and fiancée. I think its bliss just sitting watching a wee kids movie relaxing after a busy day. If I’m ever having a stressful moment I’ll put on some music and clean which

is also something I find good to unwind ha!

What are fashion designer Top Trio?Ralph Lauren, Julien Macdonald and Dolce & Gabbana

What’s your best beauty tip?Keep your face clean and clear by

remembering to wash your make up off before bed and use a cleanser

and toner and moisturiser that suits your skin type. I have oily skin so I

use skin products that don’t dry the skin out too much and still leave it

nice and soft. Is there any one thing you cannot

I have so many favourite pairs! It has to be my new Blink Shoes they

Online interactive haggling website offers shoppers fun, exciting way to bag

a bargain on new products at the price they choose.

Let’s Haggle is the first UK-based on-line interactive haggling site, allow-ing individuals to shop for unique deals on a wide range of exciting new products from leading brands at the price they want to pay.

The first and only platform of its kind, shoppers can use the fun haggling element and their savvy negotiating skills to shop for the best possible deal on any of the brand new products offered, from electronic gadgets and home wares to designer fashion accessories and beauty products. There’s no catch, hidden costs or charges; just good old-fashioned haggling on brands like Tiffany & Co., Mandarina Duck, Panasonic, Ethos and more.

Shoppers who are watching their budgets but still want their favourite branded products will be greeted on the website by an online shopkeeper who knows all the insights about the products and will advise you if you should offer a higher or lower price to have your deal accepted.

“Let’s Haggle shifts the conventional e-commerce model by using game dynamics to provide a fun, entertain-ing and social shopping experience for its users,” says Madhur Srivas-tava, Founder of Let’s Haggle. “Let’s Haggle is reshaping the ancient art of haggling and bringing it to life online, in a fun and interactive way, enabling users to pay less than the original asking price on a range of products.”

Members register free of charge, choose a product they like, haggle with the online shopkeeper to deter-mine their final price and then place their offer to secure the product. Users do not pay if their offer is not

accepted.

The mind and the body are part of the same entity. Very often we assume that the actions of the mind are sep-

arate from the body, that whatever the mind does, it has no relation with the body and vice versa. How-ever, there are countless examples where we can see the mind and the body working in harmony; when you manipulate the mind the body gets manipulated as well and when you manipulate the body, the mind gets manipulated accordingly.

A smile can brighten up your day

To give an example, consider the fact that whenever you are upset, perhaps over some personal or even professional issues, for whatever reason you are feeling low spirited, then its effect can be seen on the body as well. You lose your appetite, your face loses its brightness, some people even suffer from illnesses just because they are depressed! While on the other hand, when you are joyful, it is quite evident in your physiology. There is a spring in your step, there is a beautiful smile on your face, your digestive system performs perfectly and everything seems to be working perfectly with

your body. This was an example of how the mind affects the body.

With the help of YOGA

Now you might be wondering how does the body affect the mind. Well, there is a very good example that has even been scientifically proven about how the body has an influence on the mind - YOGA. Yoga involves putting the body into vari-ous postures, which were painstak-ingly discovered by ancient Indian scientists, and which have been known to benefit not only the body but also the mind. Yoga has been known to have a positive effect on the mind - reducing stress, opening up the mind, bringing a freshness to the attitude of the person and many more effects. So, through yoga we can manipulate the mind by putting the body through various postures.

Make peace with the mind and body

Thus, we can very well see that the mind and the body are in complete harmony with each other; they are not at all separate, they are two sides of the same coin. So, we now come to the title of this article - a

healthy life is a happy life. You may now very well see after the above explanation how true that is. In fact, this fact has been known to man for hundred of years. After all, there is the famous proverb - "When wealth is lost, nothing is lost. When health is lost, everything is lost".

Modern researchers and scien-tists are now finding new proofs after performing experiments that, indeed, a healthy lifestyle also leads to an increase in the happiness that one feels with his or her life. All that an individual needs to do is to follow a good diet which involves more of natural foodstuff aka Organic Food than artificially processed food products, a little exercise every-day along with some basic yoga exercises, meditation and of course a nice little walk amidst the nature. This is known to be the formula to a blissful life. However stressful your day might have been, you can al-ways rejuvenate yourself if you keep yourself healthy. After all, a healthy body is nothing but an invitation to a healthy mind.

I’m a little sceptical regard-ing the supposed planned creation of this move, the little snippets at the end

of various movies etc. seems a little on the obvious side to me. Regardless of how we ac-tually get to this moment may be disputed initially but the Marvel/Disney master plan to create the move that every comic book fan has been waiting for, the action hero gang of all time is brough to the big screen in spectacular

fashion with "The Avengers."

Taking all the best parts from a num-ber of super hero movies, director Joss Whedon, has created an action packed, humorous and vigorously engaging superhero mash-up of entertainment in a stylish man-ner that boasts a rich collection of moments that brings life to a story which could have been in danger of falling into the sometimes repetitive narrative that this genre of movie suffers from.

The story goes that, Marvel laid the groundwork for this movie back in 2008 with the first movie ‘Iron Man’. They imagined a whole family of

interlocking, but individual, movies eventually coming together into one franchise. The second movie they gave us was ‘The Incredible Hulk’, then ‘Iron Man 2’ and finally com-pleting this part of the master plan with last year's ‘Thor’ and ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’. Leading the charge throughout was Marvel executive Kevin Feige and although they may have been a financially beneficial exercise it doesn’t mean that each outing has been a glowing critical success.

Then we finally arrive at ‘The Avengers’, now it may have been an expensive undertaking but it certainly doesn’t suffer from being

Page 41: MAY 2012 - issue (17)

PAGE 41MAY 2012 - issue (17)

overly stuffed with your typical Hol-lywood indulgence that some big budget hero movie can suffer from. Written and directed by Whedon, who is more famous for his TV work with the likes of the Buffy and Angel franchises, the movie is a fast paced enjoyable ride that balances the humour well with the overall story and uses the various special effects elements in a manner that impress-es and helps tie everything together without being overly extravagant.I was initially worried by this movie due to the amount of big characters involved and was fearful of having to sit through long character intro stories which would inevitably leave

less room for the actual film to play out and establish itself. I needn’t have worried though as Whedon handles these sequences in super-fast time and sets things up so that the ‘Avengers’ story quickly esca-lates as each scene plays out.

The action kicks off when Thor’s brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) lands on earth all huffy and spoiling for a fight. He’s a power-hungry guy who eventually makes off with the Tesseract, the energy cube which was discovered during the plot of ‘Captain America’, remember? The thing they found deep in the ocean! The mysterious Shield organisation

makes their first real appearance when Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), to the disapproval of his other Shield colleagues, attempts to assemble an elite group of concerned individu-als who happen to be known as the Avengers. The script skilfully blends together a mixture of humour and tension.

Most of the best lines for me are set aside for the ever sarcastic Iron Man Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), who instantly rattles the cage of the overly serious and stiff Captain America Steve Rogers (Chris Evans). A funny scene early on in the movie has these two characters squaring

Page 42: MAY 2012 - issue (17)

ContentsMOVIESPREVIEW

up to each other before eventually they come to the conclusion that they are both on the same side with the same goal of recovering the cube and thus stopping Loki using its powers to command the arrival of an interga-lactic force who’s main aim is to take over humanity.

A little more anticipation is added to the mix as reserved Bruce Ban-ner (Mark Ruffalo) is used for more scientific purposes by the group as his alter ego The Hulk could spell serious trouble for everyone aboard should it make an appearance on the airship. Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johans-son) is the Black Widow and she definitely holds her own among the metal and muscle that abounds the group. We get to see a little more of her character including her back story here than we ever did in Iron Man 2.Although Downey for me is the stand-out in the Avengers cast each person within the cast does get a good op-portunity to raise a few smiles and to also get across their own self-doubt issues which we have previously seen

Page 43: MAY 2012 - issue (17)

PAGE 43MAY 2012 - issue (17)

G G G G

in their individual ‘prequel’ movies. Whedon limits the action scene loca-tions to mostly being in or around the massive airship for large parts of the movie, a ploy that make the most of the lengthy climax that encompasses the annihilation of a major city. The combat moments are thrillingly staged and used in a way that they actually gain something from the 3D inclusion with thrilling scenes of the camera bouncing off buildings in a series of breath-taking burst of zoom and tracking shots.

The Avengers turns out to be the debut production from Marvel since Disney acquired the comic book franchise back in 2009 and my guess is that it will not be the last as the end conclusion certainly hints at many sequels to come. My second guess would be that those sequels may not arrive until we have seen more from our individual team members first????

Director: Peter BergCast: Taylor Kitsch, Brooklyn Decker, Liam Neeson, Alexander Skarsgård, Rihanna

Battleship should really have the word ACTION imprinted at the top of the script because it is really going to

be the only way that someone is going to enjoy this movie without feeling cheated. It does have its big moments, it even has its stupid moments but for the most part you just have to take it as a action packed, non-serious piece of enter-tainment. At time it tries too hard to be what it is definitely not which lead to it falling into laborious lulls in the action.

Battleship reportedly took 200 Million dollars to make and for me it is hard to see where that money has been spent. The move seems to be lacking in all areas from the script right across to the CGI, it all just doesn’t seem to add up?It's a little sad because the movie does come up with some inspiring ideas from the start. The story goes that ‘science’ has come up with the idea for a deep space satellite that can send signals to other planets that are similar to earth called ‘Goldilocks Planets’, the hope being that they could maybe support human life.

Our story eventually starts with Alex Hop-per (Taylor Kitsch), who has been forced to join the Navy due to getting into trouble when he was younger, he is getting ready for a large scale, international naval exer-cise and on a side story is trying to pluck up the guts to ask his girlfriend Sam’s (Brook-lyn Decker) father Shane (Liam Neeson) who happens to be his Vice Admiral, for permission to marry his daughter. Before he gets a chance aliens attack.

Although blatantly cast as the bad boy with ‘potential’, Kitsch doesn’t really bring much to the hero character, Neeson is on similar form with a sort of one dimensional caricature creation for his part. The least convincing however is Decker who seems to be only there for her ample breasts and not a lot more, simply put I suppose she's just the eye candy.

Page 45: MAY 2012 - issue (17)

PAGE 45MAY 2012 - issue (17)

Not long after the alien’s land we discover that they're looking for something, they place shields over Oahu and five ships. While the action plays out around them the outside world for the most part forgotten about, sure there are a few short news bulletins, some Presidential words from Obama, and I suppose a couple of scenes with arbitrary government bureaucrats that don’t seem to add anything to the overall story. The most worrying thing for me would be that there doesn’t seem to be any other military branches available to assist our potential heroes in this story?

With a movie like say Independence Day you at least get the impression that there is a global is-sue at hand, you see other people going through similar things and in the end different people come together for the greater good. With Battleship we seem to be on our own, and its not a good feeling. Battleship also suffers heavily from that age old problem of ‘borrowing’ from other movies for its ideas and design in a way that, unlike say John Carter which is at least based on one of the book which started the genre, you don’t really want to forgive. As an example the aliens we see come across as very reminiscent of a certain Halo game that some people might recall.

The movie trashes a large amount of the viewer’s time trying to get to where it’s trying to go to with-out really giving us anything along the way, in the end I just didn’t care if any one of the cast survived. Battleship has clearly put all its eggs firmly in one basket ACTION, and when it does kick in I suppose they should get points for doing it 100%. These scenes seem to be overly long to me, rather than short bursts intertwined with character interaction moments it seems to be all action, action, ACTION. With just a handful of massive action scenes the movie is over, but wait this is a 2 hour movie? It's like the editing team thought to themselves let’s not mess up this nice clean floor and decided to leave in every frame that they shot.

I suppose one of the cooler moments in the movie is when the whole aspect of the Battleship game is implanted into the movie as an idea on how to beat the alien defences… it a brief cool moment, but a moment nonetheless. Another tipping of the hat to the game can be seen in some of the alien shells which are fired at the ships… they are shaped like pegs from the game.

If you really, really like action, and just action, then I suppose you might really enjoy Battleship, if you like a little something else on the side with your ac-tion then you might just try look somewhere else.

Having had a pretty successful partner-ship in the teen comedy area the

Farrelly brothers attempt at a Three Stooges remake is surprising as due to its PG rat-ing its pitched more towards the pre 12 audience that they are used to. What we get is a kinda watered down version of what the Farrelly’s, like they have had a ticking off from their parents and are trying to behave themselves? We swap the guys usual semi-adult humour territory that we find in their usual 12+ comedies like There's Some-thing About Mary, Dumb and Dumber, Me, Myself & Irene and Shallow Hal, for small scale innuendo, wordplay and innocuous slapstick.

The surprise here is that it almost works, its close, but just not quite getting the cigar here. Their take on the Larry, Curly and Moe franchise is not particularly treading on the toes of archetypal comedy but it does have a certain charm and amuse-ment about it. The movie is holding its own pretty well so far at the box office but I’m sure will shine more in the DVD stakes than it will at the cinema.

Overall it’s an enjoyable movie and there are a few standout moments for me like when the boys mistake a visiting monsignor for a rather shady character. Another sees them having a pee-shooting contest in the maternity ward of a hospital. I’d bet that only the most critical viewer will fail to laugh at those scenes. Will Sasso plays Moe, and portrays the delightfully bossy, scoffing character perfectly. Sean Hayes is a masterstroke as the frizzy-haired Larry; and Curly, generally the public favourite dunce, is captured by Chris

Diamantopoulos. The trio we get here play the original with such skill that it is sometimes difficult to separate them from the originals across long stretches of this movie and it is surely not only a testament to their acting skills but to the direction they received from the Farrelly’s. For those who perhaps don’t recall the original Stooges they featured in a series of movies between 1930s – ’50s, but most will remember them from their shorts movies which were typically less than 20 mins long. The Farrelly’s address situation by splitting the movie into 3 connected ‘episodes’ with each new part introduced using title cards. Episode 1 - More Orphan Than Not, takes place in an orphanage which is looked after by Mother Superior (Jane Lynch) and Sister Mary-Mengele (Larry David). We find the orphanage on the verge of

bankruptcy mainly due to various episodes of our unlikely heroes’ energetic and expensive carry on. Episode 2 - The Bananas Split let’s loose our buffoons on the outside world as they are contracted by a woman (Sofia Vergara) planning to bump off her sickly husband. Episode 3 - No Moe Mister Nice Guy being the final episode see’s the Stooges one man down due to Moe defecting to Reality TV and appearing as a brand new member of Jersey Shore. Eventually the trio are reunited in time to create mayhem at a swanky party, scupper the villains of the piece, and ultimately rescue the orphan-age from closure. Along the way it’s a chaotic mixture, but I’m sure that most people are not looking for anything else from this move? Sit back and focus on the slapstick comedy paying homage to the original movies/shorts and simply enjoy the ride.

Xbox fans will be loving this.... the release date of the hotly anticipated

Halo 4 has finally been announced via twitter and on November 6th 2012 the return of ‘Master Chief’ will be on every Xbox gam-ers screens.

The Microsoft Press has released this statement:

April 17, 2012 – The countdown has begun for the landmark enter-tainment event millions of fans worldwide have been anticipating for more than four years. “Halo 4,” the hotly anticipated sequel to the iconic franchise that has shaped

“Halo 4” marks the return of leg-endary hero Master Chief, named by Fast Company as “one of the most popular characters in gaming history,”1 and aims to set a new standard for blockbuster interactive entertainment with the launch. Set four years after the events in “Halo 3,” Master Chief returns to confront his destiny and face an ancient evil that threatens the fate of the entire universe. Developed by 343 Industries, “Halo 4” marks a new be-ginning for the landmark entertain-ment franchise that has sold more than 40 million games worldwide and inspired multiple New York Times best-selling novels, live-action shorts, comic books, action figures and apparel.“We are beginning a new saga with

‘Halo 4’ and embarking on a journey that will encompass the next decade of ‘Halo’ games and experiences,” said Phil Spencer, corporate vice president of Microsoft Studios. “Mil-lions of fans worldwide have been eagerly awaiting the opportunity to step back into the boots of Master Chief, and, with ‘Halo 4’ leading the charge, we’re confident 2012 will be the most successful year in Xbox history.”

“Halo 3,” the biggest consumer product launch of all time when it released in 2007,2 concluded the original game trilogy, but left many unanswered questions around the fates of the series’ beloved hero, the Master Chief, and his artificial intelligence companion, Cortana. On Nov. 6, fans will experience the next chapter of the iconic franchise.

GAMINGNEWS

The new Assas-sins Creed game has made itself known now for a

few weeks and has been confirmed for release on October 30th. And so far we know that the game will take place in America set during the American Revolution and focuses on the conflict between the British colonists and the Native Americans. As we say good bye to long time assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze we say hello to our new protagonist... Conner. Don’t worry that’s just his adopted name, his real name is something even the producers are

having a hard time pronouncing, so take that Ezio and Altiar. From what we’ve heard and seen so far is that the gameplay is going to be completely reworked to give it a complete new touch to the fran-chise, by t only climbing and jump-ing of rooftops you’ll also be able to do so as quickly and as smoothly across tree tops and branches. There will also be elements of hunting in the game, almost similar to Red Dead Redemption style of hunting in which case you can kill an animal, skin it and then sell the supplements for money.

The game also is to be set in the large town of Boston and New York along with a large country side area known s the frontier which is meant to be one and a half size bigger than the scale of Rome from Brother-hood. Gameplay wise you will now be able to hold dual weapons while fighting and stealth has got a lot

new features such as double coun-ters and chain kills.

One noticeable element is that Connor has a flintlock pistol in his arsenal which might convey their will be a variety of firearms to use, also there is the new bow and arrow and guessing what will be Conner signature weapon is a tomahawk and of course the hidden blade will be returning.

There are thousands of new anima-tions to be carried out with new and improved combat, defense and counter attacks have been set to be more difficult as there is a push for the fighting to be more focused on the offensive using speed and momentum as your advantage.

Assassins Creed 3 will be released for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC on October 30th.

With the upcoming new version of Dante ar-

riving sometime later this year, Capcom now have released another HD col-lection this one being the original DMC series includ-ing Devil May Cry 3 special edition. For fans of the Devil May Cry series some of you will be wondering if the revamped version of DMC 2 is not as infamous as the original or if the game is even is bad as eve-ryone says. Well there is some good news and some bad news.

It’s not just the enticing and ridiculous story that makes the DMC series great but it’s one of the most innovative games during the early 2000’s and helped pioneer a new style of action games. The only downfall is Devil May Cry 2 not much improving. The game seems out of touch with the original and not thought through enough altogether, instead of fighting giant demon’s and monsters your fighting helicopters and tanks plus DMC 2 difficulty has became increasingly easy compared to the others.

The gameplay looks and feels slicker and crisper. Although the High Defi-nition compared to the other HD collections aren’t as excellent. The main thing that makes Devil May Cry great is its innovative combat style. Dante is still delivering high paced, combo as smoothly as ever.

The main stand out of the collection is Devil May Cry 3, with the HD visu-als it far looks the best out of the

three and including it being a great gaming experience altogether. Also you feel privileged to be playing a classic game that ultimately set the bench mark on action games such as God of War and Bayonetta. With three games proving to be a real hit just sadly now when Devil May Cry 2 is directly compared to the others, even with the HD visuals the graphics looks slightly worse by getting rid of the blurriness there-fore showing the low resolution and grainy textures. In the end if you’re a Devil May Cry fan this game is a defi-nite buy and a great way to relive the classic Dante before upcoming DmC arrives later this year.

Set after a cata-strophic incident known as the event, where survivors

scurry for food and shelter, you control one survivor searching for his missing family in the ruins and dust swarming streets of a giant city ironically known as Ha-venton. I Am Alive conveys the law of the jungle when society is shattered and law and order stripped down to mere survival of the fittest customs where the strong prey on the weak for scraps

of food or sport.

When this event occurred our hero was on the other side of the country, spending a year walking back to see his family. The city lies in ruins and the journey is a treacherous one, how and what the event was keeps as a mystery to us, leaving it up to our imagination to be guessed what happened to the now bleak and run-down Haventon. With the reliability of human decorum on a downfall, travelling through the city you will encounter many difficult decisions that could potentially help other survivors by lending first-aid packs, alternatively you can keep the first-aid pack for yourself, but sometimes helping survivors out a little bit just isn’t enough to keep them going.

There sure is a lot of climbing to do

in an apocalyptic city, with controls similar to the Uncharted franchise, the protagonist is far from Nathan Drake when it comes to upper body strength. With Stamina depleting by climbing, shimmering and hanging and when it’s finally gone you have got a quick burst button mash to get to your destination or most likely fall to your death. You can replen-ish your health and stamina with supplements that you will find on rare occasions, so think twice about giving them away.

When encountering enemies your most useful technique is the ele-ment of surprise, by either pointing your gun at them even if you’re out of ammo, the enemy doesn’t know that or when an enemy holds you up at gun point you steadily surrender and when the enemy is close up

Page 61: MAY 2012 - issue (17)

PAGE 61MAY 2012 - issue (17)

you slice their throat and pick up their ammo. But picking of a pack of 5 guys some which have guns of their own all comes down to sleek strategy and killing the right combination of enemies first. Other enemies wear body armour then fearlessly walk towards you while being completely oblivious to the fact that their head is exposed to gunfire.

I Am Alive is full of enough elements to keep you playing throughout its story and successfully portrays the emotion on how humans would survive when all society is gone and struggle to live their lives and a simple showing of how games will embark upon the human condition when every-thing seems lost.

One of the crazi-est, driving, action packed games has made

its return back to the Play-Station 3. Twisted Metal delivers some of the most ridiculous gaming modes and fun than will have you stuck to your screens for hours on end.

It’s been over a decade since the last twisted metal game. With the new game out pretty much nothing has changed, the game is about a deadly competition created by mysterious man named Calypso and whoever wins the competition is granted one wish. The only difference in this new instalment is you only get to choose between three of the competitors that enter the competition; Sweet

Tooth, Mr. Grimm and Doll Face who each bring along their deadly gangs.

The control scheme in the game may seem fiddly at first to handle but in time you will begin to get the hand of it. The games arcade style is similar to the old school style which was one of the things that made the previous games renowned. Each vehicle has their own unique weapons and stats; each also shows off grades of armour, speed and efficiency of special weapons along with the extra weapons you pick up in the battlefield. The Multiplayer is surprisingly good, there are still the usual network errors but hey, what game doesn’t have that. It also has the classic 4 player split-screen and LAN support. You also earn experi-ence leads to unlocking new vehi-cles, weapons and different skins.

The overall presentation of Twisted Metal impressive, by observing the

smallest detail and the amount of production that was spent towards this game. Each car has its own distinctive feel and look about them, there is an incredible amount of en-vironmental damage that suits the atmosphere down to the ground, there is a new use a live-action cut scenes which by themselves are tre-mendously cheesy in some ways but were here for the perfectly rendered explosions and non stop carnage.

I can say that Twisted Metal has made a great come back to the next gen console and keeps the enor-mous amount of hype it got. There is the occasional bug that slows the pace down but doesn’t seem to derail me from playing the at all, but with hopeful patches on the way you can look towards a more refined game.

Bankhead Mountainball

Like many ‘extreme’ sports, Zorbing, Orbing or Sphereing was created in New Zealand back in 1994. The concept is quite simple, you build a human sphere which can accommodate up to two fully grown adults, secure them inside then let them roll down a hill in it (hamsters have been exercised for many years in a very similar way!)

CLASSIC MOVIE POSTERS 101

Attack of the 50 Foot Woman is a 1958 American science fiction feature film produced by Bernard Woolner for Allied Artists Pictures. It was directed by Nathan H. Juran (credited as Nathan Hertz) from a screenplay by Mark Hanna, and starred Allison Hayes, William Hudson and Yvette Vickers.

The original music score was composed by Ronald Stein. The film was a take on other movies that had also featured size-changing humans, namely The Amazing Colossal Man and The Incredible Shrinking Man, but substituting a woman as from the protagonist to antagonist. The story concerns the plight of a wealthy heiress whose close encounter with an enormous alien being causes her to grow into a giantess.
