Steve Kidd - President, GCRPresident’s Corner

As we approach the summer months when things should slow down a bit, I still don’t see a break in GCR activities that our Social, Autox and DE teams have been putting on this year. My hats off to this great group of volunteers who commit so much effort & time into planning and putting on the activities we love to share with our fellow GCR members and our favorite Car make. April was an especially busy month with an autoX on April 3rd at the Bank Atlantic Center, a social on April 10th , a Driver Education on April 16 & 17 at Homestead and a Charity event on April 29th. I wish to again thank all the volunteers that helped Steve and Dottie with the Compassionate Friends car show. Despite torrential rains just prior to the event, we had a high-quality turnout and raised a good sum of money for this worthy charity. The following GCR members assisted us in the judging, car staging, vote tallying and other administrative tasks needed to make this event possible: Link, Stan, Ed K. Mike T., Kyle, Beena, Darryl, Roger, Sherry, Deb, Laura and Diane . Special thanks to Kyle for bringing out 2 really cool trucks and Link for bringing out a brand new Cayman R with 67 miles on the odometer. Thanks also to Edco for “comping” the trophy plaques and Steve and Dottie for donating the trophies, as well as all the vendors that donated items for the baskets that were raffled off. As we move into the summer months, 3 major multi region events await us in May, August and September. The first is Zonefest, slated for Memorial Day weekend. This year the event moves from Mt. Dora to the fabulous Innisbrook Resort in Palm Harbor, Florida and celebrates Suncoast regions 50th anniversary. Please see the ad on page 32 of the April Kassette and try to attend. Dottie and I will be attending and watching this event closely since our 50th anniversary is coming up in another 2 years and we will, in all likely hood, host the 2013 zone fest somewhere in Goldcoast region….I’ve heard cry’s to do this event in Key West and run the AutoX at the site of the famous Bay Bottom crawl and a rally thru the Lower Keys back roads or at one of those swank Palm Beach resorts as we did when GCR hosted the Parade back in the 1960’s.We have a huge region geographically so any venue from the tip of Monroe County to the western edge of Highlands County could be considered. Please let me know your thoughts on sites, activities and fun things to do and remember this would be a big multi region competitive event with a full concours, TSD rally, AutoX and tech quiz. The most spectacular event of the year will be the Porsche Parade in Savannah Ga. If you haven’t registered yet there still may be slots available so don’t delay any more. I’ve dedicated 2 complete “Presidents corners” to this Parade since it’s the last time in many years that we’ll have a Parade this close and I want to see lots of GCR members there. We have submitted nominations for quite a few National awards and are hoping to win big. In addition, our top notch AutoX and concours teams have been preparing and are up to the task of bringing home lots of trophies. Want to know more….Please re- read the February issue of Panorama…go to page 13 and check out the schedule,

the events, the listings of local attractions and lodging and registration procedures. For up to the minute information check out the parade web site at [email protected] or network with one of the GCR team who are working to promote our group activity and participation. For this parade, GCR is planning a caravan to Savannah, and has arranged alternative lodging at the Baymont Inn for folks like us that find the host hotel a bit too expensive. C h e c k the GCR web site for the latest Parade news, Caravan dates/times and contact info for the Baymont. The final multi regional is Rennfest, hosted by Peach State Region, and held at a resort in the mountains of North Georgia. I went last year and can tell you these guys know how to put on a multi region event! Hopefully we can start promoting this early and get a big group of GCR members up to this event. Again, this event has something for every taste and lots of non competitive events like hiking, fishing and relaxing. More on this event as we move closer to Labor day weekend. May 1 marked the midpoint of our AutoX season and the start of our AX summer break. The May event also was one of the most technical courses Steve and Alex could create to eliminate any possibility of bottom out. The result was amazing with 7 Porsche drivers within a ½ second of the fastest Porsche time…you will have to check the results on line to see how close things really were. But wait …The May event was also marked the birthday of our AutoX chair, Alex Ortega Jr. who turned 21 and was finally able to enjoy that cold one after a great event. Happy birthday Alex ! Other Porsche people in the news are as follows: All the get well wishes to Mike Joffee seem to be working as he’s becoming a regular at many events and plans to attend Zonefest and the Parade. Thanks again to Kyle, Jerry, Bob V. and a few others who donated their old helmets to the AutoX program to be used as loaners for AX newcomers. One of my goals as president was exemplifying our logo that it’s not only about the cars….it’s about our people. To me this means having fun and enjoying what the club has to offer. While we face unprecedented challenges to make our budget dollars go as far as possible, GCR has taken steps to find balance and common sense to insure that GCR not only maintains a healthy balance sheet, but also never loses sight of the fun factor. More on this in coming months, however we plan to establish a 50th anniversary account so that all 2013 festivities will be covered from these funds and we won’t dip into our reserves to pull off a celebration that other regions will be envious of. On a final note, thanks again to all the officers, directors and committee chairs that make all the events and activities discussed above possible. Volunteering for one of these positions is a lot of work but has unimaginable rewards in camaraderie, friendships and quality time spent with people that share the same passions. If you would like to become more involved with GCR, please give me a call, or see me at one of our events.

Porsche classes are loosely based on the PCR’s for medium size regions, with minor regional adjustments. The major difference will be the addition of NM (novice men) and NW (novice women) classes. These classes are strictly for new comers only …no prior Autox ,DE, or other motorsport experience. Please see Steve for any car class questions or if you wish to run in a novice. We reserve the right to make additional class/rule changes as needed.

Our 2011 series will be based on 7 events. To be eligible for an end of the year award, competitors must run in at least 4 events in the same class. Each competitor’s top 4 finishes will be calculated and an end of the year class champion and possibly runner up (depending on class size) will be chosen. In case of a tie, additional events will be added until the tie is broken. Year end champion trophies will be presented at the December Holiday Party, along with A-team and other special recognition awards

So what’s new at autocross??? Stock Novice Drivers are! Gold Coast Region is happy to announce we have had some first time autocrossers at our April and May events. Your first time at an autocross can be a little bit scary for yourself and your car, but our great instructors have worked with the following drivers and they are very excited about autocrossing. They will be back for our next event with their 911-T, 944, Boxster, Boxster S and Cayman S:Sasha and Vivian Ortega, Linda and Randy Schmitt, Ricardo Guiulfo, Andrew Chi, Brian Louderback and Jim Griffin.

Welcome to the Die Porsche Kassette, a monthly magazine of the Gold Coast Region of PCA. If you have a Porsche related story that you would like to share with photos, please e-mail the information so we can place it in the “From Our Members” section in the Kassette. Please limit articles to one page. E-mail them to [email protected]. I would like to start off with a big thank you to Team Diaz, Richard and Cynthia for the excellent coverage of three events in this issue; check out the great cover and photo gallery from the 12 Hours of Sebring on page 28. We are so lucky to have one of the most historic race tracks in our backyard. Next a trip to the La Palma restaurant in Coral Gables on page 14. What a backdrop for those beautiful Porsches, and the brunch was great also. For a hat trick we go to Homestead with some great photos of the two day DE. Included with the photos are three articles from first time drivers and a taste of the track participant. If these articles and photos don’t make you get off your chair and come out to these events, you need to change your glasses,

Editor’s NotesRoger Fabel - Editor

just kidding, I hope you enjoy these great articles and photos.

Another of our faithful contributors is Pedro Bonilla, out Tech Editor. Each month Pedro brings us a very interesting article with super graphics. Let us know if you have a tech area you would like to see in a future issue.

We have tried to provide you with an annual calendar so that you can plan ahead to attend as many GCR events as possible. I would like to thank our social committee and Dottie Kidd for helping to plan out the full year. Finally if you have a “From the Members” article, please submit it to my e-mail [email protected].

We would like to welcome the new members to Gold Coast. Hope to see you at the next event. If you have any questions about the club please call one of our

Tech Corner: Kaboom! Catastrophic Engine Failures

If the engine goes, there is generally so much internal damage that it has to be replaced with either a new or a used engine ($8,000 - $18,000).

Is there a remedy?Yes, there are several. The easiest one is to replace the bearing before damage occurs. This can be done in one of two ways:

Removing the engine from the car, dismantling it and 1- opening the two engine block halves and replacing the bearing with either an OEM bearing or with an aftermarket one.Replacing the bearing without engine removal with 2- a popular aftermarket retrofit which uses a stronger, non-sealed bearing. This requires the use of a proprietary special tool for removal of the OEM and installation of the new retrofit.

Both of these solutions are costly, much more so the first one, so my recommendation is that when you need your clutch replaced is the time to do the IMS retrofit since the transmission, clutch and flywheel have to be removed anyway. The IMS bearing sits behind the flywheel.

Some people have been able to catch the problem before complete engine failure occurs. Some have been lucky when replacing their clutch and caught it just in time while others were able to observe a foul-smelling oil leak that led them to replace the IMS bearing before engine failure happened.

Which cars are prone to this failure? All of the M96/M97 Porsche engines have the IMS and thus are prone to have the bearing fail. These engines can be found in 1996-2008 Boxsters, 1999-2008 Carreras, and 2006-2008 Caymans. Turbos and GT3s have a different engine architecture and don’t suffer this malady. We have also seen that tiptronic-fitted cars and cars that are driven hard, such as those that are tracked on a regular basis, are much less prone to the IMS bearing failure. We have seen garage-queen cars that failed at 25,000 miles and tracked cars (mine) which were still running strong at 200,000+ miles. Most of the catastrophic IMS failures come from 1999 - 2000 Carreras and 1997 - 2004 Boxsters but there have been a few from 997s and 987s as well.

Porsche has never admitted to having a problem with the IMS bearing on the M96/M97 engines. Nevertheless, they changed the design of the IMS no less than 4 times during the production life of the 996 and 986, they also reinforced the bearings on the IMS and evened out the stress on the shaft by re designing the cam chains and sprockets in later model years, especially when the M97 engine was introduced (on the 997s and 987s). Curiously, the latest engines (A19) on 2009 and newer cars were completely redesigned to not have an intermediate shaft.

If you go online and check the different Porsche Forums (including mine, PedrosBoard.com) you’d think that these failures are a dime-a-dozen.The truth is that a very small percentage of engines fail, but when someone has an engine failure the first place they go is on the Internet and post about their “self-destructing” engine. You usually don’t read about someone who drove to work and back safely and his engine didn’t blow up that day!

So, should you worry about it?I say no. Enjoy your car. Very few have catastrophic failures.

Having said that, let me try to quickly and simply explain what these potential failures are:

The one most people worry about is the Intermediate Shaft Bearing failure. Even though it’s referred to as the Intermediate Shaft (IMS) failure, what fails is the bearing at one end, not the Intermediate Shaft itself. All of the modern water-cooled Porsche engines up to 2008 have a shaft that runs the length of the underside of the engine block. This shaft is chain-driven from the crankshaft and in turn drives the double camshafts on each bank of cylinders. At one end of the IMS is a sprocket which spins on a bearing. The sprocket is held in place by a small stud that can break, causing the bearing to fail. The bearing can also show excessive wear because Porsche used sealed bearings which are lubricated “for life”.

These bearings eventually, with many miles and many, many heat cycles can tend to dry up the “lifetime” grease and because they are sealed and cannot self lubricate with oil, they can start to wear excessively . Eventually, if not attended to, the wear will allow the end of the IMS to move a bit which can alter the engine’s timing and catastrophic engine failure can happen.

11

Page 12: May 2011 Kassette

Tech Corner: Kaboom! (continued)

We have also seen the “D-chunk” failure where the cylinder liner (generally in the center cylinder – No. 2 or No. 5 develops parallel cracks and eventually the bottom edge of the cracked cylinder releases a chunk in the form of a “D”. When these cracks develop, just as with the porous block engines, some coolant may mysteriously “disappear”.

Another one is the bottom-end failure due to oil starvation (on the track with sticky tires – because of the elevated G-forces that force the oil away from the pump’s intakes – this also happened to my ’98, but now with 203,000+ miles on the engine). What generally goes in these failures are the crankshaft bearings that overheat and break up due to lack of lubrication when the oil pump goes dry on the high lateral-force turns every lap.

One catastrophic engine failure that can be avoided easily by observation is the hydraulic-lock failure caused by a failed oil breather system also known as the Air / Oil separator (AOS).This system is designed to distill oil from the crankcase vent and return the liquid oil back into the engine. When it fails, liquid oil can be drawn into the inlet system causing a hydraulic-locked engine and catastrophic failure. If your car starts smoking heavily on startups on a regular basis it’s generally a telltale sign of a bad AOS. A big cloud of smoke once in a blue moon is normal, but not constantly.

There had been a few other engine failures which are rarely seen anymore. On the late model 1997 to early 1999 Boxsters there were the porous engine blocks. Because the Boxster was such an unexpected sales success, Porsche had to quickly ramp up production and a few hundred porous blocks delivered to the assembly line from their contractor went undetected by their quality control procedures.Cars with porous engines started filtering coolant into the oil through microscopic pores in the cylinders. The engines that failed this way were generally replaced by

Porsche at little to no cost to the owner (even when these cars were out of warranty – this happened to my ’98 at 27,000 miles when the warranty at the time only covered through 24,000 miles or 2 years).

Porsche was able to recall most of the porous blocks, but because of the production boom they tried to salvage the situation by boring the cylinders and pressing in a special sleeve into the cylinder thereby sealing the pores. The fix worked, but some of these engines had a slipped sleeve which required Porsche to also replace those engines as well.

Porsche has never disclosed the failure rates in the M96/M97 engines. Some Internet figures have these failure rates as high as 20-25% of all engines, but from what I’ve seen in my own experience and also in discussions with many other independent Porsche techs who specialize in engine rebuilds, I’m a firm believer that the catastrophic engine failure rate in the aforementioned engines is only 1 - 2%.

That means that 98 -99% of the engines will lead long and healthy lives!

I think I’ll just go for a drive now.

Happy Porsche-ing,Pedro

Coral Gables, Sunday Brunch and a lot of Porsches, just looks right! About twenty-five PCA-GCR members in about twelve Porsches met at about 11:30 am to enjoy one of the best brunches in the Gables. Due to the high humidity and above average temperature, instead of enjoying the romantic courtyard, we ate inside, which was closer to the Extensive buffet. Many new members attended as their first time PCA event. Since it was a more intimate group, new and old members not only enjoyed the food, but great company. After eating, we all went outside to visit and admire the Porsches. A 1989 Red Speedster took the spotlight!

APRIL 16-17TH We always see fabulous photos about the DE Events, but this time we wanted members to share their Driver’s Education, first time experience with the Taste of The Track and Driving in Novice Group with an instructor. The Taste of the Track is being able to go out on track with an experienced instructor to get a feel for the event. Generally, there are loaner helmets since everyone needs to wear one for safety regulations.

Mitchell Herr —1982 Red 911 SC

My first DE at Homestead Motor Speedway on April 16th was a fantastic experience. As a new driver, I was shown “the line” by a skilled, seasoned PCA instructor. It was a revelation to see what my modest 1982 911 SC is capable of in expert hands. Then it was my turn. Although I’ve driven for almost 40 years, I immediately realized that I had a lot to learn -- track driving is utterly different than commuting to work or even driving for pleasure on public roads. Even though Gold Coast Region’s emphasis at DE events is on safety, my sessions were plenty exciting and left me exhausted but grinning from ear to ear. It was also great to see the wide variety of Porsches at the event: from stock vehicles to highly modified GT3 RSs and even GT3 Cup cars -- and all of their owners were friendly and happy to show their cars. The hook has been set: I’ll definitely do future DEs because I want to learn how to drive my Porsche as it was designed to be driven. And I’ll have a blast doing it!

Randy Schmitt—1996 Gray Boxster S Saturday morning starts before the alarm clock goes off. I awake like a kid on Christmas Day. I am off to Homestead Miami Speedway for my first Driver’s Education (D.E.) event.I had been involved in some motorsports before, but never a road course event. I did two autocross events and loved them, so I thought a D.E. event might be fun. I signed up for Saturday and Sunday.

I was ready, helmet, tech inspection sheet, lunch, beverages, so off I go to the track with my wife’s 2006 Porsche Boxster S named “Mona”. On the way to the track, I never listened to the radio just the sounds of Mona. I knew we were both going to get a work out and that I need to be one with the machine.

Arrived at the track just before it opened at 7AM. There was a line up to get into the gate with an array of different rigs. Some very serious equipment on trailers, campers, etc. Others, like me, with just their daily drivers. When the gates opened, I signed the waiver and headed onto the track. How cool was this. I’m in the infield of a major speedway and I am going to drive on the track. Headed over to registration as the sun was coming up. Checked in with the very friendly staff and received my information packet, track map schedule and my instructor assignment. Also got a garage assignment. Pulled the car into the paddock space thinking only if these walls could talk. I prepped the car, unloaded, installed the provided vinyl numbers and headed to the drivers meeting. This is where I met my instructor, Darryl. We hit it off great. Next, on to the classroom for about 45 minutes of much needed instruction.

I had sometime to watch others prep and run the track before my first D.E. session. When my time came up, I picked up Darryl and onto the track we go. Wow what a rush of excitement and nervousness. I had so much to remember.

We started out slow letting other cars pass. Darryl’s much needed instruction kept me out of trouble. I had never pushed Mona like this and was a little slow catching on. I was glad when the first session was over. Darryl debriefed me and I was a little overwhelmed. I sat and studied the track map and went over all the instruction Darryl had given.

When the second session started, I knew I could do better. And, I did. With each session, I was getting smoother and faster. Darryl didn’t have to instruct as much. I was having a blast. Saturday’s last session ended and I was exhausted.

While driving home, all I could think about was that track. Sunday morning started out much the same as Saturday, but instead of nervous excitement, I was just pain excited. I had four fun sessions on Sunday improving on each. Watched and learned from others running the track, saw some actual racing and met lots of great people. What a terrific opportunity to see what you and your car can do. What a great weekend, I think I am hooked!

Roberto del Valle - 1997 White 993

I recently joined PCA-GCR, which was a Valentine’s Day gift from my wife. I was excited because I wanted to attend DE events to learn how to get the most out of my car. I was trying to register for the Homestead Racetrack Drivers Education when I learned that quickly found out that I can’t drive my car on track because it is a Cabriolet with no roll bar. My car is a pristine, A/C garage-kept, super babied, stock 1997 993 with 40K miles.

I had called every PCA official and received the same answer. So I decided to attend events that do not require roll bars. My first social event was a Brunch at La Palma Restaurant. I arrived early and met Richard Diaz and his wife, Cynthia Fluhart. I immediately expressed my frustration to them. Richard gave me a quick class and offered to take me out in his car on the track. Things started to brighten up. Richard gave me driving tips at the restaurant, which I tried and has helped immensely with my daily driving in my 993 and with my daily car.

Saturday, April 16th, my wife and I arrived at the track around 1:00 PM and met with Richard and Cynthia. After we greeted each other, Cynthia told me we had to run to get a helmet since Richard was up to go out on track. We ran to a few garages and at the registration booth, they lent me a helmet. We rushed back, I put the helmet on and got into Richard’s Boxster S. Richard drove to the pit that enters the track and we are waved by one of the men to show the wristbands. Then we wait a few seconds and a second man further down the pit lane started waving madly at us to get on track. Richard stepped on the gas and we took off like a cat being chased by a dog.

We drove the first curve well and then a straight. Richard was reaching, I think 100, 110 mph, but I could not see the speedometer, it was fast!! Then, here comes a wall or something, which requires us to do a very sharp turn and it is approaching fast. OK, OK Richard is an instructor and he knows what he is doing, calm down. Ahhh, I had just met Richard, who seems like a great guy, but does he know what he is doing. Well before I could come up with more weird thoughts, Richard slams on the brakes, shifts gears and hits the curve. There were two curves adjacent to each other. He comes out of the second curve in second gear and roars out like a cheetah chasing a gazelle. He does not shift to third until the RPM needle is a hair away from the red line. I am thinking well it is over I am alive. No that was just the first lap. Well the second lap I new what was coming so from then on I started to enjoy it and frankly Richard not only is a great person but one heck of a driver.

Richard and Cynthia asked me if I wanted to go out again, and the grin on my face was like the one when you ask a kid if he/she wants candy. I went out again and it was superb. So far the PCA has been a wonderful experience both La Palma and the track event were priceless. Richard and Cynthia are wonderful and have given us a tremendous welcome to the club.

After this experience how addicted am I to track driving? Next time you go the track check out the man with a big sign that says, “Will wash your car for a ride”.

12 Hours of Sebring

A caravan was organized by Richard and Cynthia to meet at the 84th Diner in Ft. Lauderdale at 6 am. About 18 cars, mostly Porsches left at 6:30 am, before sunrise. We arrived at Sebring International Raceway around 9 a.m. Since it is the opening round of the American Le Mans Series, over 100,000 fans were there. Our group was mixed up in all the traffic. Eventually everyone found their way to the Porsche Corral. There were no victories for Porsche or Audi in ALMS, just a wonderful day of great racing! Porsche scored total victory in the GTC! (for Porsche GT3 only) Hope to see you next year!

We are planning a drive and dine to Conchy Joes on the

river in Jensen Beach.

We will have our own Chickee on the water and parking along the water.

Watch for more information about Caravans to arrive at

Conchy Joes at 11:30 AM Saturday May 21, 2011.

You will order from the menu and be responsible for you check.

We all sang “rain, rain, go away – come again some other day” in hopes that the skies would clear up and we could have a dry “Under the lights car show”. Well, obviously it didn’t work. The torrential rain, hail and flooded streets kept many of our car owners at home and their clean cars tucked safely away in the warmth of their garages.

However, the weather only scared away about half of our courageous owners. Many of those beautifully cleaned and polished cars arrived with raindrops galore which quickly got wiped away. We had a dry evening to compare stories and marvel at the beautiful cars and trucks that braved the evening’s storms.

The Compassionate Friends of Boca Raton thank each and every one of you who ignored the weather to help out a wonderful cause. All the cars were quickly judged and trophies presented before the next downpour. There were five winners, based on the year of their cars: Frank Feiler (1939 Lincoln), Felipe Tavares (1965 356), Jim Aloisi (1971 911), David Munro (1999 996) and last but not least Stan Pearlman (2005 997). Stan actually tied with Link Eveleth (2012 Cayman R) both having a final score of “98” and had to break the tie using their odometer mileage. Peoples Choice was also a tie between “Seymour”, the psychedelic 356 and “Plum Crazy”, that really purple PT Cruizer with loads of neon accent. The most unique entries had to be a pair of trucks brought by our own Kyle Rathbun. These trucks were the real deal…A sort of hotel room on wheels, but ready to pull just about any size rig!

Inside the gym were over 30 silent auction baskets to bid on, a 50/50 drawing, raffle tickets and music. Outside during the car show Rockin Rich D.J. kept everyone hopping while many enjoyed freshly cooked hamburgers and hot dogs.

Many thanks to all the Goldcoast region members who volunteered to help in various ways such as judging, staging cars, greeting, registration, calculating scores, timing etc., as well as those who came out to support the group “rain or shine”.
