PRESIDENTS' MESSAGE

Our year of celebrating Beth Israel's 4S~ anniversary has only one more major event, and that is the temple gala-"Forbidden Feldman," a chance to hear again the best songs, skits, and humor from shows pas·t. Our highly talented production team of Feldman & Rosen and their crew of all-stars will be giv~ng us another fun night and a chance to laugh at ourselves. Those of us who get to sit back in the . audience and enjoy the show will enthusiastically applaud. What are we applauding? A labor of love and hard work. The hard work we can attest to. Trying to conduct business while a rehearsal is going on over your head is no easy task. The building may be structurally sound, but the foot stomping from a "Tsoris Line" registered "3" on the Richter Scale. But we're not complaining. In fact, we can't wait for the fun to begin!

In the past two months we also enjoyed the Circle of Friends

of April 9th, where we shared a

potluck supper of dishes gleaned from the cook book of the former temple Sisterhood. This was an evening of tasty food for the body and soul. However, the most moving event, was the watching of the video "L'Dor V'Dor" made by Enid Lader for the 4Sth anniversary party on March 18th at the Beck Center. The video captures the voices, the faces, and the stories of our congregation--its founding, growth and hopes for the future. The video showed us our "yikhus," our priceless heritage given lovingly from one generation to the next.

While we have mostly looked east of the Cuyahoga River for our sense of the larger Jewish community, we have had conversations both with B'Nai Abraham of Elyria and Agudath B'Nai Israel of Lorain about fostering a stronger friendship among our congregations and members. Our first jOint program was held April 16th with a Pesach program for students and adults held at Beth Israel, with many positive comments from the

"

participants. We hope to do more jOint programs throughout the year, and hope that these can help foster a stronger sense of Jewish community for all of us. To that end, Agudath B'Nai Israel is welcoming us to attend a piano concert On Sunday evening, May 21st

• While the concert is part of an annual fund raising dinner, we may attend the concert only. Please see the box below for further information if you would like to join them.

.' EDUCATION NOTES

As we begin the month of May, we look towards the end of - as always - a very full year. On any given Sunday morning you can walk through the halls by the classrooms and hear the kindergarten and first graders speak so seriously with their teachers, Donna Sweet and Linda Schwin, about an upcoming holiday and how they will celebrate with their family.

Next door you can observe the second and third graders, with teachers Robin Kaufman and Rivienne Levin, actively engaged in learning their new alef-bet letters and figuring out the ~Hebrew mystery word" of the day.

Go down the hall and the fourth and fifth graders will be learning a new prayer for the Shabbat service with Judy Friedman or finding out about the importance of gemilut chasadim - acts of loving kindness - with Rhoda Rosen. Across the hall the sixth and seventh graders will be finishing up the last prayer of the Shabbat morning service with Shosh Ault and then creating ~a

mural depicting the special days of a Jewish lifetime with Susan Wagner.

In the corner Hebrew classroom - our Hebrew Lab, you'll find Scott Machol, Glenn Butt, and a team of parents and high school students sitting one-on-one with

th th . our 4 through 7 graders as they practice their Hebrew skills.

If you walk towards the back of Ratner Hall to our ~educational suite", you'll find Charlotte Feldman with the eighth and ninth graders engaged in an animated discussion about how we are each

important as individuals and as members of a larger Jewish and world community. Then Laura Green Stout will step in to continue the conversation from last week about how the Jewish people have had to choose between adaptation and assimilation as we have gone through history.

Upstairs the high school students are learning with Rabbi Lettofsky about the different leadership styles of Moses and David. Or, they are either working with Harry Lader and David Rosen on our temple's website, working as teaching assistants or Hebrew lab assistants, or having a BITSY youth group meeting with Ken Cooper and Maria Bloom.

Downstairs in the school office, Dee Lazarus is keeping track of attendance and tzedakah collections from each class, making last-minute copies of papers we had to have, and just making sure someone is available to answer questions.

When classes visit the library, they are met with a cheery ~ Shalom' from Dalia Alterovitz, Martha Bruckman, Scott Machol, and other parent volunteers. Evy Rosenblum is always ready with a bookcart filled with a special collection of books, videos, and music for each upcoming holiday.

No Sunday morning would be complete without a stop for bagels and coffee in Vicki's Cafe. Vicki Abady, Laurie Levenson Kukura, Tina Keller, and other volunteers have made sure our parents and children have their morning refreshments - complete with bagel cards !

If there is a special lunch or family program, you'll find Barbara and Barry Schecter coordinating the food and supplies. Everything is always tastefully done!

Sometimes I feel like the conductor of a grand orchestra -adding a little music here, some t'fillah (prayer) there, meeting with parents, coordinating programs for our students. But, like any conductor realizes, you can't make music without an orchestra. Todah Rabah to our wonderful staff who have volunteered their time and talents to making this such a memorable school year.

TORAH TALlt. .. Check out the bulletin board in Ratner Hall each week for a short drash on the weekly Torah portion. This year we have used "Torah Sparks", written by former Cleveland Rabbi Dov Perez Elkins. Each drash contains a short commentary on a specific part of the Torah portion and is followed by four questions. See if they don't spark a lively discussion! (Because of three B'nai Mitzvah this month, the Library Torah Study will meet only on May 6th

).

May 6 - Kedoshim - Lev. 19:1-20:27 "You shall be holy, for I, the Lord, am holy." What follows is a blueprint for bringing holiness into our lives.

May 13 - Emor - Lev. 21:1-24:23 This portion explores the role and intended purity of the High Priest. Then follows an account of the Jewish holiday calendar.

May 20 - BeHar - Lev. 25:1-26:2 The importance of the Sabbatical Year, the Jubilee Year, and _ Redemption of the Land. The treatment of people and the land are the key themes.
