Dear Friends,

Today we celebrate the great Feast of Pentecost—the gift of the Holy Spirit to the Apostles (Acts of the Apostles Ch. 2). We regard this as the birthday of the church, where, once strengthened and empowered by the Spirit, the Apostles go forth preaching and teaching about Jesus. The Gift of the Holy Spirit, however, is not simply something that happened in history. The Holy Spirit continues to inspire and enliven and has done so through history.

One of the gifts of my sabbatical time was the ability to take the time to enter into some of the religious traditions of our faith. These traditions show how the Holy Spirit continues to enter into our lives and move us to do God’s work. Today I want to write about my encounters with St. Francis and the Franciscan tradition and St. Ignatius and the Jesuit tradition. These are my reflections, certainly not intended as a history of or exhaustive study.

One of the retreat centers I visited was San Damiano, run by the Franciscans near Danville, California. We had the opportunity to reflect on the San Damiano cross, from which Jesus spoke to Francis to “rebuild my Church.” Later I had the opportunity to enter into the real world application of that Tenderloin District of San Francisco, where the homeless are welcomed for respite shelter of the streets. We also went to St. Anthony Dining Room, which feeds 2000–3000 a day, as well as providing concierge-type services for those in need who are seeking employment or social services. One of the Franciscan characteristics promoted was a “both/and” instead of an “either/or” approach. This reflects St. Francis’s inclusive way and the living out of his universal call to love—and to love universally. This includes the Earth and all creatures within it. Sometimes we can forget that universal call to love when we set up our barriers or limitations.

Another sign of the Spirit in our tradition and lives is the Jesuit spirituality of St. Ignatius. During my time in Berkley, my spiritual director helped me through a modified 30-day retreat that is a highlight of the Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius. I know many parishioners enter into this and the mighty “examen” that helps us to live a reflective, thoughtful and intentional spirituality as a way of life.

These two men lived hundred of years apart and several hundred years ago. Still, we see how the Spirit is alive and well in the Church and in all of our lives.

Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And You shall renew the face of the earth.

God Bless,

O, God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of the faithful, grant that by the same Holy Spirit we may be truly wise and ever enjoy

His consolations, Through Christ Our Lord.Amen.

The Descent of the Holy Spirit— Acts 2:1–41 Even after Christ’s death the Holy Spirit works all things in us through Mary. In fact, what the Creator said to the serpent in reference to the Immaculata, “She will crush your head” [cf. Gn 3:15], is, according to the teaching of theologians, to be understood to have no limitations of time. It is the task of the Holy Spirit to form the new members of those predestined to the Mystical Body of Christ until the end of the world. But, as [St.] Louis Grignion de Montfort demonstrates, this work is brought to fruition with Mary, in Mary, and through Mary. (KW 1229)

EXCITING NEWS! Spiritual Motherhood of Priests Following the lead of our parish, all the parishes across the Archdiocese of Cincinnati are invited to launch a new prayer apostolate that encourages women to consider becoming a spiritual mother to one priest or seminarian of our Archdiocese. Prayer for priests and seminarians has been proven to be effective throughout the history of the Church and we would like all the women of the parish to consider signing their name to the poster located in the vestibule and taking a packet of materials to begin praying for your new spiritual son. For more information about this apostolate please visit http://www.cincinnativocations.org/additional-resources/spiritual-motherhood-of-priests/

PentecostToday as we celebrate Pentecost, the Holy Spirit wants to make us advocates of God’s presence to bring new life to others, especially those who do not know the love of God in their lives.

Your gift in the St. Vincent de Paul poor box will help the poor to believe in the mystery of God’s love for them.
