This Monday we presented our 2nd Annual Halo Award to our Magnolia Interact Club, along with a $200 check for their participation in building a community garden. In addition, they were awarded the 2012-13 Presidential Citation for their achievement as an Interact Club. This is a great example of Peace Through Service. Three of the students attended the RYLA youth camp this year. (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards.) The students, who were sponsored by our club shared their experiences, which hit home on a very personal level. The areas that had the greatest impact on our students included motivational speakers from their peer group and the encouragement they got to overcome their fear of heights. The speakers discussed the dangers of drugs and how dramatically and traumatically it can affect you and your family. Secondly, through positive encouragement, the students were able to overcome their fear of heights with activities which included the zip lines. When the students first arrive at the RYLA camp they are placed with other students who they do not know. They are encouraged to talk with each other and open up about their experiences. This communication enables the students to become really good friends before they leave the camp. The Anaheim Rotary Club also presented a second check to the Interact club advisor, Colonel Greg Linden. These additional funds will help pay for the Interact Sashes that our seniors will wear at their graduation ceremony. Our Anaheim Rotary Club is proud of our partnership with these Interactors who continue to serve their community. We are honored to present these awards as a small token of appreciation for their hard work this past year. “Ana- heim Rotary: Service to Youth and Our Community”. Memorial Day evolved from Decoration Day to honor the soldiers who died in the Civil War. The North and South honored them separately, but after World War I it became a single national holiday to honor all American soldiers who died fighting in any war. It’s sad, but the more traditional observances of Memorial Day have diminished over the years. Most people are no longer aware of its significance, and the fallen soldiers it’s meant to honor. The flag ceremonies and the parades have slowly been fading from the public’s consciousness, and even the graves of these brave soldiers have suffered from neglect. However, each year on the Thursday before Memorial Day, 1,200 soldiers from the Army’s 3rd US Infantry Division place small American flags on all of the 260,000 graves at Arlington National Cemetery. And, a bill was passed in 2000 to designate 3:00 pm on May 30th, as a “National Moment of Remembrance” to remind Americans exactly what Memorial Day is about. It’s a moment of silence, or listening to Taps, to remember our nation’s war dead. Gen. George S. Patton once said: “It’s better to fight for something than to live for nothing.” On this day, remember that “All gave some, and some gave all” is the ultimate ‘Service Above Self!’ (Continued on Page 2.) Memorial Day History (Continued from Page one.)

Phillip M. DéMarks Norman P. Buben

The very first Memorial Day was celebrated in the 19th century in Waterloo, New York on May 5, 1866. This was our nation’s first formal, continuing remembrance of veterans who had died in war. In 1966 the federal government formally recognized Waterloo as the birthplace of Memo-rial Day. Waterloo is important to us today as Rotar-ians because this tiny industrial village was home to extraor-dinary historical events of national importance. This village symbolized the kind of thinking that made Rotary the kind of organization that it’s become today. Keeping Memorial Day a day of remembering those who have paid the ultimate price for our freedom is vitally important. Rotarians around the country will be participating in parades, memorial services, and other forms of Rotary fellowship. Anaheim Rotary will be dark this next Monday out of respect for the men and woman who have given their lives for our country. Locally you can attend the American Legion’s Memorial Service at 11:00 AM this coming Monday, May 27th at the Anaheim Cemetery. Another service will be at the Santa Ana Cemetery at 10:00 AM. Both ceremonies will include a 21-Gun salute and a color guard flag presentation. What a great way to pay tribute to our soldiers who gave the ultimate Service Above Self!

Vas Arora

To some the picture at the left is just a sewing machine. To Vas Arora it is so much more. It represents a way to give another human being dignity and respect through vacational purpose. Vas gives back to his community in India by purchasing these machines and donating them to SANKALP a vocational school. Thanks for your Service Above Self, Vas!

Both Phil DéMarks and Norm Buben are celebrating over thirty years of friendship. Besides being a Vietnam War Veteran, Phil is one of the three proof readers of the Squeak and is a periodic contributor regarding article submissions to our publication. As a writer Phil submits articles to many other publications on a regular basis. Thanks for your weekly contributions to the Squeak, your true and steadfast friendship, and your Service Above Self, Phil!

We had 22 members in attendance with five visitors and one visiting Rotarian this week. Do a makeup meeting online at: http://ow.ly/gzpG0 It’s easy and it’s fun!

The Squeakquelle! This Week’s Program

This week’s program was given by Cori Charm who spoke about equine assisted psychotherapy. Certified therapy horses are used as partners with the Certified Equine Assisted Psycho-therapist to stimulate healing and development for her patients. This experimental therapy involves interactions with her clients and the horses. The perceptions of the horses mirror the personalities of the humans that they interact with in many cases. For more information on this developing field go to:www.ACharminghorse.com

Cori Charm Steve SainLast Sunday was the Family Fun Day at the Irvine Park’s Outdoor Education Center. Jim Barden and his family attended the event and Jim even conquered his fear of heights by taking a ride on the zip lines! You’re a brave man Jim!

Teddi Boston

We all know that Teddi Boston is a Forest Service volunteer. But did you know that she trains all the volunteers in the program? This last week she had over 160 volunteers in her training class. Way to go Teddi, what a great job!

Kevin Patch

Club Service Director Kevin Patch reminded everyone that we are only two weeks out from our Texas Hold-Em Poker Tournament. The club has voted to make it mandatory that each member buy two tickets to the event. Each book of tickets that are assigned to you has 5 tickets. Please try to sell more if at all possible. This is our one fundraiser for the year so it is imperative that everyone does their part to make this event a success. Here are some of the areas

where we need help: We are still looking for sponsors for the event and for the tables. We need silent auction items and opportunity drawing items. Remember the cost for the event is only $40.00 per person and includes your poker chips and your food for the evening. The event starts at 5:30 PM and will be held at the City National Grove of Anaheim. Do not worry if you do not know how to play as there is a beginners table where wonderful instuctions are given. It’s a great time for all and a great way to give back to the community. Register on line at:http://ow.ly/lfYoo We Hope to see you there!

LBJ’s Past President’s Day June 17th

LBJ reminded us this week that Past President’s Day is coming up on Monday June 17th. This promises to be the best one yet!

Pictured above are Teddi Boston, Lane Calvert, Col. Greg Linden, and Steve Sain along with our Interactors from Magnolia High School who are Arezu Kazerooni, Alexis Tovar, Daniel Smart, and Berenisse Saucedo. The Interact Club was the recipient of our second annual Teen Halo Award for their work on their Community Garden poject at Salk Elementary School. The students were also awarded the Presidential Citation that was presented to them at the RYLA youth camp recently. Our club sponsored their attendance at the camp.
