Chesney’s Triumphant Return KSCS/Dallas APD/MD Chris Huff gave us the wet-and-dirty rundown of Kenny Chesney’s rain-shortened May 2 show (CA Weekly 5/4), and he was on hand for Sunday’s makeup show, too. “Kenny created a night some would say was even more memorable than [the first show],” Huff says. “He started the fun early in the afternoon, making his way out into the parking lots and taking a survey of the tailgating action – even taking a dip in a fully-functioning generator-powered hot tub that some enthusiastic fans had brought. “With no opening act, [he came] out with just his guitar and performed ‘There’s Something Sexy About The Rain’ – the same song he concluded with [May 2]. After that, he ... jumped into his full-band concert set. “After a nearly two-hour set, ... the concert became less of a stadium show and more of an impromptu honky tonk that just happened to hold 25,000 people. With the exception of ‘Old Blue Chair,’ the encore consisted entirely of some of Kenny’s favorite covers. He said farewell to the still electrified crowd three hours after first setting foot onstage. “Speculation is that Kenny footed the entire bill to put this show on, even though he was in no way obligated to make a return appearance. He also had special commemorative t-shirts printed. It goes to show that even after all the years and success, Kenny hasn’t forgotten what it’s like to be ... in the audience.”

My Tunes: Music ThaT shaped My Life Sirius XM’s The Highway morning host Jay Thomas discusses his most important songs, artists or concerts: 1. Alabama, Morgantown, WV’s WVU Coliseum, mid-’80s: This was my first country concert. I wasn’t a big country fan at that point, but what a show. And kind of ironic that just a few years later I would begin what’s become a 20-year career (so far) in the Country format. 2. Carole King, Tapestry: The first CD I ever

bought, and one of the greatest albums ever. I didn’t own a CD player at the time, but used this terrific CD as incentive to get one.3. Tim McGraw, CRS New Faces Show: At my first CRS in the early 90’s I remember hearing McGraw knock the crowd with “Don’t Take The Girl.” I went back to my station and told everyone about this incredible song that we’d be playing forever.4. Garth Brooks, Landover, MD: Any Brooks show is memorable, but I’ll never forget the night at the Capital Center. The group from my station spent at least 40 minutes alone backstage with Garth. One of my co-workers bought some stuff from the merch table for Garth to sign so that he could give it to his parents. Garth pulled out some cash and promptly reimbursed him for everything he bought. Who does that?! Then he signed it all. Thanks Garth – come back soon!5. I’ve been to a lot of great shows over the years. The ones I remember the most include: Keith Urban, whose shows only get better each year; and Kenny Chesney, I got to jump on stage and “sing” with him during “Cheeseburger In Paradise” at the Meadows in Hartford. • A highly regarded song or album you’ve never heard: Flo Rida – man, woman, group? I’m just sayin’, I have no idea. I’ve lived in the state, but I’ve never heard the music.• An “important” piece of music you just don’t get: Opera. I can appreciate it to some degree, but I don’t get it.• An album you played or listened to incessantly: Anything by Edwin McCain. I love all of his CD’s, and he’s one singer/songwriter I don’t mind buying a ticket to see.• One obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: The West Virginia University fight song. It’s the ringtone on my cell and you’ll hear it after every touchdown this fall. Let’s Go Mountaineers!!

Around The Horn Former WDTW/Detroit APD/MD Scott Gaines is joining Alternative KDBN/Dallas for PM drive tomorrow (5/19). “I am very excited to be apart of this great station,” says Gaines. “I have missed being on the air.” Congratulate him at [email protected]. Chart Chat Congrats to Sugarland, UMGN’s Royce Risser, Mercury’s Damon Moberly and the entire Mercury promotion team on earning this week’s No. 1 single with “It Happens.” The song is the duo’s sixth chart-topper, joining “Want To,” “Settlin,’” “Stay,” “All I Wanna Do” and “Already Gone.” And a shout-out to Universal South, who have seized Nos. 10 and 20 on this week’s chart with newcomers Eli Young Band and Randy Houser, respectively. Added congrats to VP/Promotion Teddi Bonadies, who just signed a contract extension that will keep her at the label through 2010.

Three Join Hall (continued from page 1) Among the classics bearing McCoy’s signature harp: “Take This Job and Shove It,” “Delta Dawn” and “He Stopped Loving Her Today.” Harmonica players Jelly Roll Johnson, Jim Hoke and P.T. Gazell honored McCoy musically, as did Rodney Crowell, who sang “Candy Man.” McCoy told of “walking the revered hall,” spending some time in the Rotunda and realizing he had played on songs recorded by 53 of the 108 Hall members. He added, “All I ever wanted to do was play music with those people. To be part of this is so amazing.” He followed his remarks with a moving version of “Shenandoah.” Citing Roy Clark’s numerous Tonight Show with Johnny Carson appearances, CMHOF Executive Director Kyle Young said Clark was “a TV entertainer who sang a country song, not a country singer who appeared on TV.” Clark co-hosted Hee Haw for 25 years. Prior to performing Clark’s hit, “Come Live With Me” with the Carol Lee Singers, fellow Oklahoman Garth Brooks said, “He is a good man who never stopped being a man of where he was from.” Clark said that early in his career he and wife Barbara spent 347 straight days traveling to shows in their car carrying everything they owned. “That was [manager] Jim Halsey at his best,” Clark quipped. Before closing with a moving rendition of “Yesterday When I Was Young,” Clark said, “It is such an honor to be associated with the members of the Hall of Fame and to realize that my name will now be mentioned with theirs.” Hall of Famer Ralph Emery inducted his long-time friend Barbara Mandrell. An emotional Mandrell said she was grateful to God for allowing “my Daddy Irby to be with me at the press conference announcing I would be going into the Hall.” Irby Mandrell, who managed Barbara’s career from age 11 to her retirement at 49, passed way in March, about a month after learning that his eldest daughter would receive the industry’s highest honor. Joining McDonald in paying music tribute to Mandrell were Alison Krauss with the then-controversial 1973 No. 1, “The Midnight Oil” and Louise Mandrell with her sister’s 1978 hit “Sleeping Single In A Double Bed.” The night’s show-stopper belonged to Reba, who was joined on “I Was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool” by McCoy and George Jones, both of whom can be heard on Mandrell’s original 1981 recording.
