George Bernard Shaw

TRANSCRIPT

1. Main Idea: In Maxims for Revolutionists, George Bernard Shaw reveals his cynicism for humans and their actions by undermining common beliefs that are thought to be positive. Shaw also suggests the importance of criticism of humans in order for humans to progress. Shaw lays foundations of his beliefs for an improved society.2. Key Quotation: The golden rule is that there are no golden rules. I believe that this is a key quotation because Shaw is expressing that there are exceptions to all rules that make them bad Shaw is also expressing that nothing and nobody is perfect Shaw is also expressing that he is not always correct either3. Questions: Hell is paved with good intentions, not bad ones. Is Shaw trying to express that all people have good intentions, but dont act on them? Is this criticism that humans fail to take action? Or is he trying to express that all people have good intentions for themselves, but not for others? Nothing can be unconditional: consequently nothing can be free. If Shaw states that nothing is unconditional, does that mean there are consequences or a debt to be repaid for everything? Does that mean that being born into a life isnt free, and everyone has to repay a debt?4. Objections or Additional Support: Liberty means responsibility, that is why most men dread it. I believe that Shaw is conveying that most people do not want to have the responsibilities of freedom because they want to be taken care of, and that people are more comfortable with their decisions being made. I object to this because throughout history and today many people have sacrificed their lives so that people could be granted liberty. Activity is the only road to knowledge. I support this because one will never learn by just observing. In order to gain the skill and knowledge, one must try and practice in order to grow. Beware of the man who does not return your blow: he neither forgives you nor allows you to forgive yourself. This is commonly seen when a person makes a mistake and disappoints someone who believed in him/her. By disappointing someone, he/she will not be able to forgive himself/herself because of the guilt.
