RFID provides unique asset identification and location, with electronic information capture that tracks items as they enter or leave areas, rooms, buildings, or even campuses. RFID passes this information to enterprise applications such as Maximo for use in managing and maintaining assets and in generating alerts and alarms if the assets move where they shouldn’t. RFID, often called ‘the next generation bar code’, assigns a unique identity to each tagged asset. Tags are read in non-line- of-sight fashion by RFID readers, either stationary or handheld. These readers capture and transmit accurate asset location information back to Maximo. For misplaced assets, their location can be updated, or Maximo can be used to create work orders, or change orders, for returning each asset to its correct location. Having correct asset location information not only permits staff to utilize critical assets quickly but also allows Maximo to facilitate “opportunity preventative maintenance”, using ‘location’ as a key parameter for asset maintenance in a selected area. Enhancing Asset Management“Where are my assets?” is a common question from companies and organizations that need to monitor the location and condition of critical and expensive assets that may even include people. Important assets are frequently moved from place to place--sometimes on an unplanned, ad hoc basis--creating problems for finding, track-ing, managing and maintaining them.

IBM Maximo Professional Services offers you the Maximo-RFID solution to address this asset management challenge. We have paired the IBM RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) solution—an asset tagging, identification and tracking system that transmits stored information wire-lessly—with IBM Maximo™, one of the world’s leading asset management systems.

The Maximo-RFID solution provides you with asset tracking and management capabilities that identify (what you have), find (where it is, where it has been, and when it was there), and manages (what you want to do with it). It’s a strong addition to traditional Maximo capabilities that already provide information on asset condi-tion, asset maintenance history and work order processing.

The Maximo-RFID solution can also be a key component of a ‘Smarter Planet’ initiative—as our world becomes increasingly instrumented and interconnected, and its elements become more ‘intelligent.’

Maximo-RFID solutionMaximo provides comprehensive asset lifecycle and maintenance management capabilities.

Tags are read in non-line-of-sight fashion by RFID readers, either stationary or handheld.

• Noneedtosearchformisplacedorlost assets, allowing professionals/staff to stay focused on task and not waste time searching for equipment/materials.

• Needforextra‘back-up’or‘safety’stock is significantly reduced, and expense for emergency rentals to replace critical lost assets is decreased.

• Helpsinsurethatassetswithunacceptable status (such as lack of calibration, testing or certification) are not used, thus facilitating compliance to industry-mandated standards.

• Opportunistic, preventivemaintenance is easier to manage because asset location can be ascertained.

• Potentialbusinessandprocesstransformation can reduce cost and expand return on investment.

IBM’s Maximo-RFID solution addresses the challenge of incorrect asset location and allows you to utilize your assets more effectively. The value the solution

brings goes beyond collecting this data—thevalueiswhatyoucanDOwith the asset or the data when you have it.

Some of the features provided by the Maximo-RFID solution include:

• ProvidescurrentassetlocationinMaximo, without manual intervention.

• Determineswhethertaggedassetsare in the correct location, displaying a list of scanned assets, their assigned Maximo-logged locations, and their actual locations.

• Automaticallyupdatesassetlocationin Maximo for assets that move, with optional alert generation for critical assets passing from one location to another.

• Allowsworkorderinitiation, toreturnan asset to its correct, assigned location.

• Identifiesassetswithunassignedlocations.

Maximo-RFID solution benefitsThe Maximo-RFID solution helps provide accurate asset location, thus providing the following benefits:

Maximo-RFID Industry Examples

Healthcare

Tracks critical, high-value assets in hospitals and medical centers; identifies asset location and status (sterilized, inspected, out-of-service, etc.) supporting optimal patient care

Energy and Utilities/ Oil & Petroleum

Identifies inventories of rooms, substations and facilities; allows scheduling of preventive maintenance by locale; identifies emergency response equipment during cleanup

Rail Car Management Detects tagged rail cars changing locations; schedules preventive maintenance at predictable stops

Cross-Industry

Traces asset movement and chain-of-custody; recognizes assets and status (last maintenance, calibration, emergency status)

Tracks high-value IT assets (blade servers, laptops, routers, etc.) in data centers, offices or building environments; enacts greater inventory control management
