By supporting non profits we assist them in turn to make genuine improvements in the lived experience of our human community. We maximise the effective choices available to our clients through identifying actions that are simple and practical. These effective choices provide clients with the power to make and implement decisions that improve future outcomes for communities. Action Research – a participative approach seeking change and understanding Matrix bases its work with nonprofits on Action Research, a participatory process. As Australian social researcher Yoland Wadsworth noted: “Findings and recommendations cannot be imposed, they must be accepted by the researched. [Therefore] the researched must be involved every inch of the way.” Matrix ensures the participation of staff and stakeholders, talking them through the process, gaining their views and discussing the recommendations with them. Capacity building using research based benchmarks The McKinsey Capacity Framework outlines key elements of capacity in nonprofit organisations, and offers case studies that are illustrative of ways to build sustainable nonprofits. We undertake assessments using this framework and align organisational aspirations and strategies to the nonprofit’s identified capacity. Matrix staff support nonprofit leaders to guide and implement the resulting change. Knowing capacity building takes time, Matrix staff are patient and take a longterm approach. Strengths based, solutions focussed – Matrix staff focus on future possibilities rather than past problems Focussing on deficits rarely leads to plans for action, but rather tends to focus on the need for more resources. Matrix undertakes strengthsbased evaluations, ascertaining what is working within the non profit from the perspective of consumers, stakeholders and staff. Matrix then identifies what aspects of the service can be built upon and replicated. This approach seeks to resolve difficulties and move on as quickly and pragmatically as possible. Recognition of small steps – Matrix maximises opportunities to experience success Organisational change happens effectively when people experience themselves as competent and successful. Matrix staff identify and articulate organisational success stories, from small steps to grand achievements. Matrix reports illustrate for clients what ‘being different’ can be like and link this to the existing success stories and achievements.

Matrix  on  Board  –  how  to  find  us  Matrix  office  is  situated  at:  Level  1,  241  Castlereagh  Street,  Sydney  Contact:   Laurel  Draffen  Email:     [email protected]  Phone:     02  9370  6247  www.mob.com.au

Matrix  on  Board  -‐  how  we  work    Community  development  -‐  “a  vision  of  how  things  might  be  organised  differently”

Matrix   is   committed   to   informing,   resourcing  and  strengthening   the  non-‐profit   sector.  By  supporting  non-‐profits   we   assist   them   in   turn   to   make   genuine   improvements   in   the   lived   experience   of   our   human  community.  We  maximise  the  effective  choices  available  to  our  clients  through  identifying  actions  that  are  simple   and   practical.   These   effective   choices   provide   clients   with   the   power   to   make   and   implement  decisions  that  improve  future  outcomes  for  communities.

Action  Research  –  a  participative  approach  seeking  change  and  understanding

Matrix   bases   its   work   with   non-‐profits   on   Action   Research,   a   participatory   process.

Capacity  building  using  research  based  benchmarks

The  McKinsey  Capacity  Framework  outlines  key  elements  of  capacity  in  non-‐profit  organisations,  and  offers  case  studies  that  are  illustrative  of  ways  to  build  sustainable  non-‐profits.  We  undertake  assessments  using  this   framework   and   align   organisational   aspirations   and   strategies   to   the   non-‐profit’s   identified   capacity.  Matrix   staff   support   non-‐profit   leaders   to   guide   and   implement   the   resulting   change.   Knowing   capacity  building  takes  time,  Matrix  staff  are  patient  and  take  a  long-‐term  approach.

Strengths   based,   solutions   focussed   –  Matrix   staff   focus   on   future   possibilities   rather  than  past  problems

Focussing   on   deficits   rarely   leads   to   plans   for   action,   but   rather   tends   to   focus   on   the   need   for   more  resources.   Matrix   undertakes   strengths-‐based   evaluations,   ascertaining   what   is   working   within   the   non-‐profit  from  the  perspective  of  consumers,  stakeholders  and  staff.  Matrix  then  identifies  what  aspects  of  the  service  can  be  built  upon  and  replicated.  This  approach  seeks  to  resolve  difficulties  and  move  on  as  quickly  and  pragmatically  as  possible.

Recognition  of  small  steps  –  Matrix  maximises  opportunities  to  experience  success

Organisational   change   happens   effectively   when   people   experience   themselves   as   competent   and  successful.
