C) Today’s Lesson
7 Maths Workbook Week beginning 18th May
Lesson 2: Multiply a 2-digit number by a 1-digit number https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zb4gcqt
Step 1) Watch the video to learn more on BBC Bite size https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zb4gcqt
How can I multiply a 2 digit-number by a 1-digit number?
You can do this by breaking down a number.
Let's think about an example, what is 6 x 40 ?
6 x 40 is equal to 6 x 4 x 10
If we put the 10 to one side, 6 x 4 is equal to 6 x 2 x 2
6 x 2 x 2 = 24
Now bring back that ten, 24 x 10 = 240
This means 6 x 40 = 240
Break down the calculation as much as you need to. If you know 6 x 4 = 24, you don't have to break it down into 6 x 2 x 2

14 Maths Workbook Week beginning 18th May
Learn Division is used when sharing a number into another number. Division is the opposite of multiplying.
Let’s have a look at some different methods for understanding division.
First, look at this example of using an array to show that 27 ÷ 3 = 9 .
Remember, you look at the videos as many times as you like!
An array is a group of things arranged into rows and columns. You can use arrays to help you divide one number
by another.
Arrange the number of things you want to divide into the number of rows you want to divide by. Count the
number of things in each row to find the answer.
You can use a number line to help you divide too. Watch this clip to find out how a number line can be used to
solve 30 ÷ 5 . https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zbkdjhv
15 Maths Workbook Week beginning 18th May
To work out 30 ÷ 5 , count how many 'jumps' of 5 it takes to get from 0 to 30 .
6 'jumps' of 5 means 30 ÷ 5 = 6 .
Now, watch this video from 1st Level Maths and Numeracy to find out how halving can help you when dividing.

Multiplication and division problem solving https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zhvbrj6
Step 1)
There's usually more than one way to solve a maths problem and knowing your times tables will be a big help.
When working out a maths problem, what type of calculation is needed? For example, do you need to multiply or divide ?
Find out how Multiplication Boy decides how many sausages are needed for Charlie's party in the video below. How would you work out 11 x 4? https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zhvbrj6
