Geometry

Similar trianglesProperties of triangles:1. Midpoint theorem states that a line joining midpoints of two

sides of a triangle is parallel to the third side. 2. The converse: If a line joining two points on two sides of a

triangle is parallel to the line on the third side, then the two points on the sides of the triangle are midpoints of those sides.

3. Congruency: Two triangles are congruent if the corresponding angles are equal and the corresponding sides are the same length. In the diagrams on the right you will see that: AB 5 PQ, BC 5 QR and AC 5 PR and A 5 P, B 5 Q and C 5 R.

Pythagoras theoremPythagoras theorem states that for any right-angled triangle, the sum of the squares of the length of the two shorter sides is equal to the square of the longest side.

Trigonometric functionsFor any right-angled triangle, if two sides and one angle (other than the right angle) are known, then the rest of the angles and sides can be found using trigonometry. The trigonometric functions are:

Ratios of areas of 2-D shapes

For any two-dimensional shape, the ratio of areas of two similar shapes is the square of the ratio of length.

Surface area (SA) is the sum of the areas of the faces of a solid.

Travel graphs

There are four types of travel graphs: Distance-time graph, speed-time graph, displacement-time graph and velocity-time graph.

Displacement is the shortest distance between two places. The straight line AB in the diagram to the right shows displacement.

Distance is the actual path travelled between A and B. The path from A to B through P is the distance travelled.

Speed is the distance travelled in a given time.

Velocity is the displacement in a given time.

These are the factors of c: (21 3 21), (221 3 1), (23 3 7), (27 3 3). The factors that add up to b are (27 3 3).

Factorise the two sides: x (x 2 7) 1 3 (x 2 7). Factorise further until you do not have common factors. The answer is (x 1 3)(x 2 7).

These are the factors of a 3 c: (21 3 212), (23 3 24), (22 3 26). The factors that add up to b are (22 3 26).

Factorise the two factors: x(3x 2 2) 2 2(3x 2 2). Factorise further: (3x 2 2)(x 2 2).

FormulaeChanging the subject of the formula means rewriting the formula with a different letter as the subject.

For instance, in the formula Tn 5 (n 2 1)d 1 c, Tn is the subject. To make d the subject we first subtract c, then divide by (n 2 1) so that we have d on its own on one side of the equal sign.

The new formula is: d 5 Tn 2 c(n 2 1).

Quadratic equationsSolving quadratic equations by factorising: This is based on the fact that if you multiply two numbers and you get zero, then one (or both) of the numbers is zero.

Cumulative frequency graphsHelp work out the mean, modal and median classes of a grouped frequency distribution. The cumulative graph is drawn by using the upper boundaries of given classes and the added on numbers of the frequency. This is an example of a cumulative frequency graph.
