Claim #1 - Students can explain and applymathematical concepts and carry out mathematicalprocedures with precision and fluency.

Claim #2 - Students can frame and solve a range of complex

problems in pure and applied mathematics.

Claim #3 - Students can clearly and precisely constructviable arguments to support their own reasoning and tocritique the reasoning of others.

Claim #4 - Students can analyze complex, real-worldscenarios and can use mathematical models to interpret andsolve problems.

    Level 1: Recalling and Recognizing

Student is able to recall routine facts of

knowledge and can recognize shape, symbols, attributes and other qualities.

    Level 2: Using Procedures

Student uses or applies procedures andtechniques to arrive at solutions or answers.

Level 3: Explaining and ConcludingStudent reasons and derives conclusions. Student

explains reasoning and processes. Studentcommunicates procedures and findings.

    Level 4: Making Connections, Extending

and JustifyingStudent makes connections between different conceptsand strands of mathematics. Extends and builds onknowledge to a situation to arrive at a conclusion.Students use reason and logic to prove and justifyconclusions.

    SAT ~ Reading & Writing

No longer will it be good enough to focus on

tricks and trying to eliminate answer choices.

We are not interested in students just picking

an answer, but justifying their answers.

    The NEW SAT Math

there will be three areas of focus: problemsolving and data analysis,

    1. ratios and percentages and proportional reasoning

    used to solve problems in the real world;

    2. the heart of algebra, which will test how well

    students can work with linear equations;

    3. what will be called the passport to advanced

    math,

which will focus on the student

s familiaritywith complex equations or functionsand their

applications in science and social science.David Coleman, President College Board, NY Times March 9, 2014

In Response to the SAT Changes . .

What this is is a clear message that good

hard work is going to pay off and achievement

is going to pay off. This is one of the most

significant developments that I have seen inthe 40-plus years that Ive been working in

    admissions in higher education.

It is incorrectto say that algebra

    isn't covered until high school.

There is a great deal of algebra in

    the 8th grade standards.

For example, students in grade 8

    are expected to solve two

simultaneous equations with twounknowns. I don't see a lack of

    rigor there.

The standards actually investheavily in algebra because of the

way they focus so strongly on the

    prerequisites for algebra in the

    elementary grades.
