There are some subjects that are particularly suited to online tuition, languages, writing studies, and mathematics being the most popular. For an adult trying to improve themselves, or more often a child needing extra guidance, there are many options, but once that decision to go ahead with taking a tutor is made, how does online math tutoring work?

1.Finding a providerThe first step is finding someone to do the tutoring. This is manly done through tutor companies, who offer multiple different tutors, usually a proprietary interface for the actual work and a range of tailored packages. It is important here, especially if this is for a child’s tutoring, to make sure the provider fully vets the tutors they use, not just in terms of their ability within the subject but background checks as well. Happily there are several reputable companies offering all of this in numerous subjects, with a number that specialise in maths tutoring exclusively.

2. The AssessmentOnce you have chosen a provider, or even a shortlist, the next step is to see what they propose the student needs. This is done through an assessment, where the student is quizzed not just on their ability with maths as a subject, but also an overview of their attitude to education in general, the subject itself and often outside interests.

This is used to not just propose a tailored learning plan, but to match a student with a suitable tutor who can connect with them better. This is normally a free service and a good way of moving from a shortlist of three or four providers to finding the one best suited to the student’s requirements.

3. The study planHere the provider and yourself agree on a plan to take the student through to the desired goals, obviously at this point the volume of sessions and length of study will also be reflected in the overall cost, so it is at this point budget does come into the negotiation.

4. TuitionThe actual tuition can take a few forms, individual providers tend to use different methods and online interfaces, but broadly there are two categories. Real time and delayed.

Real time tuition is when the student and the tutor are online together, and work through a lesson plan with the student asking questions and the tutor answering and guiding as the lesson progresses, usually through a form of instant messaging software within a proprietary interface.Delayed tuition is the situation where the tutor and student are not necessarily online at the same time, the student can leave questions for the tutor, who answers them at a convenient time, with the student then collecting the answer at a later point.
