Long Division (Without Remainders)

Lesson Fifteen

1. 36 + 28 =2. 82 - ? = 313. 42 + 39 =4. Jake earned $4 for raking

the yard, five quarters for feeding the dog and 42 dimes for washing the car. He wants to buy a video game for $10. Does he have enough money? Explain you answer.

5. What time is it 35 minutes after this?6. A polygon with four sides,

all the same length and four square corners?

7. 3 hundreds, 9 tens and 17 ones

8. At the park, there were seven bicycles and three tricycles. How many wheels would that be?

Long Division Algorithm

To be really good at division, you must learn your multiplication facts. For this lesson, if you don’t know them, you may want to use a multiplication chart like this one:

Vocabulary

• dividend - the number you are dividing

• divisor - the number you are dividing by

• quotient - the evenly divided result

• remainder - what is left over that cannot be evenly divided

• divisable- can be divided by evenly

When writing it like this:

136, is the dividend

5, is the divisor 27, is

the quotient

1 is the remainder1365

27 r 1

5 Steps in Long Division

Step 1 in Long Division

• Divide 2 into first number in the dividend.

2 ) 9 4

• Think how many 2’s will fit into 9.

4

How many 2’s will go into 9?

• Write that number directly above the number you divided into.

1. Divide

Step 2 in Long Division

• Multiply the divisor times the first number in the quotient.

2 ) 9 4

• Write your answer directly under the 9 or the number you just divided into.

4

2 x 4 = 8

2. Multiply

8

Step 3 in Long Division

• Draw a line under the 8. 2 ) 9 4

• Write a subtraction sign next to the 8.

43. Subtract

8

• Subtract 8 from 9.• Write your answer directly below the 8.

1

Step 4 in Long Division

• Go to the next number in the dividend to the right of the 9.

2 ) 9 4

• Write an arrow under the 4.

44. Bring down.

8

• Bring the 4 down next to the 1.

1 4

Step 5 in Long Division

• This is where you decide whether you repeat the 5 steps of division.

2 ) 9 4

• If your divisor can divide into your new number, 14, or if you have numbers in the dividend that have not been brought down, you repeat the 5 steps of division.

45. Repeat or Remainder

Step 1 in Long Division

• Divide 2 into your new number, 14.

2 ) 9 4

• Place your answer directly above the 4 in your quotient.

Step 2 in Long Division

• Multiply your divisor, 2, with your new number in the quotient, 7.

Step 4 in Long Division

• There is nothing left to bring down. You have no remainder.

Step 1 in Long Division

• Divide 5 into first number in the dividend.

5 ) 6 5

• Think how many 5’s will fit into 6.

How many 5’s will go into 6?

• Write that number directly above the number you divided into.

1. Divide

Step 2 in Long Division

• Multiply the divisor times the first number in the quotient.

5 ) 6 5

• Write your answer directly under the 6 or the number you just divided into.
