Math 273-02: Multivariable Calculus, fall 2016 Lectures are Tu, Th 1:25-2:15 in Wegner G1

Instructor: Dr. Eric Remaley, [email protected], office hours TBD and by appointment.

Course web page: http://www.math.wsu.edu/math/faculty/remaley/welcome.html

Text: Calculus, Early Transcendentals, 2nd edition, by Briggs, Cochran and Gillett, with MyMathLab online homework.

Prerequisite: C or better in Math 172 (or 182), or credit for math 172 through AP or Cambridge exam.

Calculator: No calculator is required for this class. Calculators are not allowed on tests.

Grading/Exams: As shown here. No adjustments for “improvement” or a “bad day” or the like. Expect no curve.

Make-up exams will be given only in rare cases, and only if you’ve made every effort to notify Dr. Remaley of the problemas soon as was possible. Otherwise, you may be given a zero for the exam.

Homework: Online homework is done in MyMathLab through Pearson Education (see the MyMathLab registration handoutlink at the course web page). Due dates for each online assignment are given in MyMathLab. Any questions from an onlineassignment that are done after the assignment’s deadline will be assessed a 50% penalty. Written assignments and their duedates will be posted at my course webpage metioned above. A paper which appears to be copied from another student orother outside source may be given reduced credit (possibly zero). Your best 12 of 14 written homework assignments willbe counted. As a rule, late homework is not accepted. Exceptions will only be considered in rare, extreme cases (whencircumstances were unexpected and beyond the student’s control, and the student has informed the instructor promptly).Even when exceptions are made, stiff penalties may be enforced.

Topics: We will cover selected sections from chapters 11 through 14. Topics include: equations of lines and planes in R3;

functions of multiple variables; vector-valued functions; vector fields; partial derivatives; gradient vector; tangent planes;iterated integrals; line integrals; surface integrals; Green’s Theorem; Stokes’ Theorem; Divergence Theorem.

Math Learning Center: Successful students make use of available resources, so don’t struggle when help is just a fewsteps away! We want you to succeed, we’re here for you, and we have FREE tutoring available in the Math LearningCenter (Cleveland 130) and the computing lab, Thompson Hall (Room 1). Tutoring begins August 22nd. Academic Integrity: Academic integrity is the cornerstone of higher education. As such, all members of the universitycommunity share responsibility for maintaining and promoting the principles of integrity in all activities, including academicintegrity and honest scholarship. Classroom Safety Information: Classroom and campus safety are of paramount importance at Washington State Uni-versity, and are the shared responsibility of the entire campus population. WSU urges students to follow the “Alert, Assess,Act,” protocol for all types of emergencies and the “Run, Hide, Fight” response for an active shooter incident (url below).Remain ALERT (through direct observation or emergency notification), ASSESS your specific situation, and ACT in themost appropriate way to assure your own safety (and the safety of others if you are able). Please sign up for emergency alertson your account at MyWSU. For more information on this subject, campus safety, and related topics, please view the FBIs“Run, Hide, Fight” video (https://oem.wsu.edu/emergency-procedures/active-shooter/) and visit the WSU safetyportal (https://oem.wsu.edu/about-us/).
