COURSE ENTRANCE SKILLS

Simplify and perform basic operations on rational expressions. Perform basic operations on polynomials. Factor general trinomials at an elementary level. Solve linear equations in a single variable over the rationals. Solve second degree polynomial equations in a single variable over the rationals by factoring. Simplify square roots. Solve first degree linear inequalities in a single variable. Solve applications involving equations in a single variable. Solve linear systems of two equations in two variables. Graph first degree equations/inequalities in one and two variables.

COURSE OBJECTIVES – EXIT SKILLS Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

Simplify advanced numerical and algebraic expressions involving multiple operations. Solve linear, quadratic, rational and absolute value inequalities, graph their solution sets, and

express the answer in interval notation. Solve literal equations for a designated variable. Solve linear, quadratic form, simple cubic, radical, rational, absolute value, elementary

exponential, and elementary logarithmic equations. Apply algorithms of completing the square, rationalizing the denominator, and long division and

synthetic division of polynomials. Graph the solution sets of systems of linear inequalities. Perform operations on complex numbers. Determine the sum, difference, product and quotient of functions and determine their domains. Determine the composition of elementary functions. Use proper mathematical notation to evaluate functions and obtain their inverses. State and apply the fundamental properties of exponents and logarithms. Demonstrate knowledge of standard vocabulary associated with graphing, including but not

limited to slopes of lines, intercepts, vertices of parabolas, asymptotes, and interplay between graph and functional notation.

Determine, given its graph, whether a relation is a function and whether it is one-to-one, and determine its intercepts and domain and range.

Graph and determine the domain and range of linear, quadratic, simple cubic, radical, reciprocal, absolute value, exponential and logarithmic functions.

Graph circles and parabolas using horizontal and vertical translation. Set up and solve practical applications using algebraic concepts. Determine the distance between two given points in the Cartesian plane, and find the midpoint of

the line segment joining them. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

1. Given an algebraic expression involving multiple operations, derive an equivalent expression that is in simplest terms.

2. Given a linear, quadratic, simple cubic, radical, reciprocal, absolute value, exponential or logarithmic function, sketch its graph using horizontal and vertical translations and determine its domain and range.

3. Given equations such as linear, quadratic, logarithmic and exponential, solve for the indicated value.

4. Develop student success skills and academic behaviors including use of class notes and required text, regular attendance, timeliness, participation in class activities, and adherence to the College Honor Code.

GRADES Course grades are determined by the following: Homework 5% Exams 60% Quizzes 10% Final Exam 25% 100%

Letter grades will be assigned by the scale below: A 90%-100% B 80% - 89% C 70% - 79% D 60% - 69% F 59% or below

Exams There will be five exams during the semester. Each exam is worth 12% of your

total grade. Exams must be taken in class. Calculators, books, and notes are not allowed during exams. There are no make-up exams. I may replace your lowest exam score with the percent you earn on the final.

Quizzes Short quizzes will be given in class. Calculators, books, and notes are not

allowed during quizzes. Quizzes will be announced in class and on Canvas. There are no make-up quizzes. Two of the lowest quiz scores will be dropped.

Homework The homework assignments will be online through www.mymathlab.com . I will

drop the five lowest homework scores. Lectures are written with the assumption that you understand the previous sections presented.

Final Exam The final exam is worth 30% of your grade and is cumulative. The final will be given on Wednesday, December 13th at 8am – 11am in our regular class room. No make-ups. If you earn 94% or higher on ALL exams, I may allow you to skip the final exam.
