Bellwork1. Leave your BW blank, but put it out so I can stamp while you work…..

2. On the back of yesterday’s computer lab paper (lined paper if you were absent) set up the HW like the board (2 mins)

Science Fair Question Guidelines(add applicable info to front of lab/HW paper)

– Has to be an EXPERIMENT where you collect your OWN DATA (not observation or research only)

– Using people as test subjects/surveys? Need 100+ total

– Building something? Must be an IMPROVEMENT on an existing thing OR something new entirely (a new kind of solar cell, etc.)

– Sports? Must build a contraption to kick/throw ball etc. so that it is done the exact same every time

Organisms & Energy Flow(notes on lined paper)

Page 5: Materials to Prep Giant slates @ tables Food web sort @ tables Food web label cards @ teacher’s desk, pass out before 2 nd activity in lab

Autotroph = organism that makes food for itself (producer)

Autotrophs“Self” “food”

Page 6: Materials to Prep Giant slates @ tables Food web sort @ tables Food web label cards @ teacher’s desk, pass out before 2 nd activity in lab

Heterotroph = organism that eats other organisms (consumers)

Heterotrophs“Different” “food”

I must be a heterotroph, since I

can’t synthesize these!

Try this! (5 mins)At your lab table:

Work as a group to quickly sort the cards & use arrows to show which direction energy is flowing

Example:

2 Big Categories of OrganismsMake a T-chart

Autotrophs/ Heterotrophs/ Producers Consumers

Page 9: Materials to Prep Giant slates @ tables Food web sort @ tables Food web label cards @ teacher’s desk, pass out before 2 nd activity in lab

There are two types of autotrophs/producers

Page 10: Materials to Prep Giant slates @ tables Food web sort @ tables Food web label cards @ teacher’s desk, pass out before 2 nd activity in lab

Autotrophs

1. Phototroph : use energy from sun to make food (photosynthesis)

Page 11: Materials to Prep Giant slates @ tables Food web sort @ tables Food web label cards @ teacher’s desk, pass out before 2 nd activity in lab

Autotrophs

2. Chemotrophs : use energy from chemicals to make food

Ex- Bacteria in deep sea vents

Page 12: Materials to Prep Giant slates @ tables Food web sort @ tables Food web label cards @ teacher’s desk, pass out before 2 nd activity in lab

There are many types of heterotrophs

Tell neighbor as many types as you canHint: A cow is one type

Page 13: Materials to Prep Giant slates @ tables Food web sort @ tables Food web label cards @ teacher’s desk, pass out before 2 nd activity in lab

Heterotrophs1. Herbivores : eat ONLY plants

2. Omnivores : eat BOTH plants & animals

3. Carnivores : eat ONLY meat

Page 14: Materials to Prep Giant slates @ tables Food web sort @ tables Food web label cards @ teacher’s desk, pass out before 2 nd activity in lab

Heterotrophs

4. Scavengers: feed on dead organisms• Ex. – Vultures, Shrimp, Mealworms!

Page 15: Materials to Prep Giant slates @ tables Food web sort @ tables Food web label cards @ teacher’s desk, pass out before 2 nd activity in lab

Heterotrophs

5. Decomposers : Absorb dead materials/waste & break them down into fertilizers for plants

• Ex. – bacteria, mushrooms

Page 16: Materials to Prep Giant slates @ tables Food web sort @ tables Food web label cards @ teacher’s desk, pass out before 2 nd activity in lab

Try this! (Part 2)

Add organism terms to the cards at your lab table

Example:

Omnivore

Closure 1. On BW (blank from today)- Draw a simple food web that includes your CRITTER

2. Label each organism with vocab- herbivore, phototroph, etc. (must have at least one producer & 3 different kinds of consumers)

3. When finished, update your unit divider (see board)
