Students of the MonthXitlally Sanchez is our February Student of the Month. She currently holds a 4.2 G.P.A. Xitlally has taken honors Chemistry and Spanish as well as Advanced Placement (A.P.) Calculus, Spanish Literature, US History, Biology, Statistics, Physics, and US Government.

Xitlally has been a part of the Associated Student Body (A.S.B.) since her

junior year and a member of the National Honor Society (N.H.S.), California Scholars Federation (C.S.F.), and Renaissance Club since her sophomore year. She has been named a National Hispanic Scholar and A.P. Scholar with honors.

Xitlally has accumulated a total of 367 community service hours. The majority of her hours have been completed at KidWorks, the community center she attended from a young age. Her favorite community service project was the trip she took to Ensenada, Mexico to work with children of migrant farm workers. “It was a great example that love knows no language and an awesome opportunity to share God’s love with others.”

She attends El Puente Community Church, where she serves as a Sunday School teacher. Before coming to Mater Dei, Xitlally attended Fitz Intermediate School in Santa Ana.

Xitlally has been accepted to Scripps College in Claremont with a four-year scholarship. She plans to major in Biology or Psychology.

Jose Luis and Dominga Sanchez are Xitlally’s proud parents. Her sibilings are 19-year-old Erika ‘10, 5-year-old Katherine, and 14-year-old Jose. Erika is currently attending Biola University. The family lives in Santa Ana.

Xitlally’s favorite Mater Dei memory was the Homecoming Carnival her sophomore year because she had so much fun and looks forward to it every year. She describes her experience at MD as “definitely challenging but fun, rewarding, and unforgettable.” She believes that Mater Dei offers a little bit of everything. “Not only is there a wide variety of classes to choose from, but also a great performing and visual arts program.”

XITLALLY SANCHEZ

Student of the Month, Pete Rigas, is an exceptional student, holding a 4.43 G.P.A. He has taken numerous honors and Advancement Placement (AP) cources including honors and A.P. Spanish, A.P. Art History, A.P. U.S. History, A.P. English, A.P. U.S. Government, A.P/Calculus, A.P. Physics, A.P. Spanish Literature, and A.P. Computer Science.

Pete has been involved in various student clubs and organizations including Renaissance Club, California Scholars Federation (C.S.F.), National Honor Society (N.H.S.), Pennies for Peace, and Associated Student Body (A.S.B.) as a Campus Green Team Commissioner.

Outside of school, Pete has volunteered at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian for a number of years and has accumulated over 550 service hours, during which time he has served as a General Board Member of the Auxiliary Candy Stripping program and Cardiac Care Unit/Intensive Care Unit Chairman. Pete has also volunteered at St. John’s Greek Orthodox Church where he attends services, and at the Panarcardian Association.

Pete is considering a wide range of colleges and universities including public, private, and liberal arts colleges. He plans to major in physics and obtain a Ph.D. in physics someday.

Pete’s favorite memory while at MD was driving to the first day of school. He was very excited to go to the same school as his sisters. Pete feels that Mater Dei has exposed him to many different ways of living and thinking. He says, “I value having the opportunity to consider these varying perspectives in shaping my own ideas.”

To those considering attending Mater Dei, Pete advises them to “take advantage of all the resources that Mater Dei has to offer--both intellectual and extracurricular activities, challenge yourself, never be afraid to reach out for help from your teachers, and always think big when imagining your future dreams and goals!”

Prior to MD, Pete attended Mariners Christian School in Costa Mesa. His proud parents are Evanthia and Vasilios. He has two sisters, Amanda Rigas ‘01 and Linda ‘03.

Mater Dei’s Cory Hahn Fund

A fund has been created in honor of Cory Hahn ‘10, who suffered a spinal injury, to help the family with the mounting medical bills. Cory’s injury has brought a tremendous outpouring of support from many communities including A.S.U., Major League Baseball, the Trinity League Schools and of course the Mater Dei family.

Supporting Cory’s ongoing recovery is Trinity Bats, which will donate 15% of the proceeds to Cory’s Fund at Mater Dei for each model of the “Pro Model Hahn” bat sold.

To purchase a bat, visit trinitybats.mybigcommerce.com/hahn or click

on the ad above. For information on the 1st annual Cory Hahn Benefit Golf Tournament taking place on February 13, 2012, click on the image on the left.
