PROGRAM NOTES

Overture to Die Meistersinger von Niirnberg Richard Wagner(1813-1883)

The medieval guild of amateur poets and singers is about to hold its spring festival.Thousands of visitors pour into town as the town cobbler, Hans Sachs, (base baritone)presides as the guild chief and lOP judge afthe competition. The opera is filled withgrand, heroic melodies, lyrical poetic songs. and many light comic interludes as we getcaught up in the shenanigans of the behind-thc-scenes judging of the songs. Nuremberglakes its music seriously and wants to know if low scores arc due to bad song-writers orjust bad singers? Unlike many opera composers, Wagner did it all: he created his ownoriginal story, wrote the libretto, wrote the overture first n not after, as a medley --, wrotethe complete score, and personally conducted the overture in Leipzig in 1862. Whileaudiences today seldom sillhrough the entire four hours plus of the full opera, theoverture is much beloved and played allover the world.

Symphon)' No.9 in E Minor"From the New \Vorld'l

Antonio Dvorak(1841-1904)

The ninth symphony by Amonin Dvol'3k remains one of the most often- played, weHknown, and well-loved works oflhe symphonic literature. Antonin Dvorak, a famousCzechoslovakian composer, was among the first prominent Europeans to visit the UnitedStates and influence and encourage American composers. During 1892-95, he was thedirector of the new National Conservatory in New York City. While visiting lhe UnitedSlates, Dvomk was struck by lhe power and beauty ofAfrican·American folk melodiesand spirituals. Of these American melodies, Dvotak wrole, "They are pathetic, tender, passionate, melancholy, solemn, religious, bold, merry, gay, gracious, or whal you will."

The symphony opens with an elegiac, haunting melody and then changes to a fast, boldtriumphant theme. In the slow, slately second movement. the English hom solo has aspiritual-like quality. Feel [he quick-stepping folk dancers in the lively third movemeniand hear Ihe heroic, thunderous. inspiring marches of the finalc. With his ninthsymphony pt:rformed in Carnegie Hall in1893, Antonin Dvofoik was teaching Americans10 explore and cherish their own musical roots and culture instead of merely imitatingEuropean traditions. Gradually, Americans began to rely on their own heritage andcreativity. A distinctive American style began ro develop in the music of such composersas Charles Ives, Aaron Copland, George Gershwin, Seotl Joplin, and Richard Rodgers.Antonin Dvorak was the visitor from the old world who inspired the new world.

Composers Wagner and Verdi Share a 200th Anniversary.

We remember two great opera composers born two hundred years ago. Wilhelm RichardWagner was born on May 22, 1813 in Leipzig, Germany. Giuseppe Verdi was born onOctober 10, 1813 in Le Roncole, near Busseto, Italy. The Overture to Die Meistersingerand five Choruses from Grand Operas are presented in celebration of the 200thanniversaries of these two innovative opem composers.

Bridal Chorus, from Act III, scene I,"LolumgrilJ "

Richard Wagner(1813-1883)

In this fairy tale opera, a mysterious knight in shining armor defends the fair lady Elsa.who has been accused unjustly. On their wedding day, she comes down the aisle toWagner's most famous chorus, as have millions ofbridcs ever since. But alas, in operaseldom is there a storybook ending. Elsa is tricked into betraying the name of her knightLohengrin. Her dead brother Gottfried is transformed from a swan, Lohengrin is escortedback to the castle of the Knight of the Holy Grail, and Elsa dies as the curtain falls.Purists will tell you that in the opera, the bridal chorus actually comes after the ceremony, not before, and that the marriage was rather short·livcd. Fortunately, however, nOI 100

many brides worry about the intricacies of Richard Wagner's opera stories. Thepassionate, magnificent music of the Bridal Chorus lives throughout the generations.

Pilgrim's Chorus, from Act I, aTannhauser" Richard Wagner(1813-1883)

Tannhauscr, having just escaped from the powerful Venus, is feeling spiritually bereft. While silling on tbe banks of a river, he sees and hears a band ofpilgrims passing. Theirpassionate prayer moves him deeply.

"Once more wilh joy, 0 my home, I may meetOnce more ye fair, flowr'y meadows I greetMy Pilgrim's stafThenceforth may restSince Heaven's sweet peace is within my breast."

AtlVU Chorus, Act II. scene t from "11 TrOl'alore" Giuseppe Verdi(1813-1901)

The troubadour Manrico visits his supposed Mother Azucenko in the camp of thegypsies. Upon rising at dawn, the manly gypsies hammer on their anvils, praising hardwork, good wine, and their beautiful women.

"Lift up your hammers,Who turns the Gypsies day from gloom to brightest sunshine?the Lovely Gypsy Maid."

Verdi's opera tells of bloody rivalry between a poor troubadour, Manrieo, and thepowerful Count di Luna for the lovely Lenora. In a story filled with amazing twists andmagnilicent arias, the gypsy daughter avenges her Mother's grisly death at the hands ofCount di Luna.

Chorus ofIhe Hebrew Slaves,"'Va, pensiero," from Act III, UNabucco"

Giuseppe Verdi(1813-1901)

After the destruction of the first temple in Jerusalem, the Israelites are imprisoned inBabylonia, far from home. The exiles yearn for their native land and cry out for theirlack of freedom.

"Oh, my homeland, so beautiful and so lost!Oh, remembrances, so dear, and so rata!!"

The opera Nahllcco made Giuseppe Verdi world-famous, and his chorus "Va, pensiero"was to play an imponam rolc in history. lIaHan patriots adoptcd "Va, pensiero" as thcirrevolutionary song in the long struggle to unify haly, finally achieved in 1861. WhenGiuseppe Verdi died in 1901, bystanders in Milan broke out in "Va, pensiero" as hiscoffin passed.

Hymn and Triumphal Marchfrom Ad Ll, "Aida"

Giuseppe Verdi(1813-1901)

The victorious warrior Radames and his Egyptian troops are marching into ancientMcmphis to the spectacle sights and sounds of great pageantry. Trumpets arc blaringthroughout, 170 choristers are singing a hymn to the ancient gods, the town orchestra isgoing full tilt. Due to crowded stage conditions, howcvcr. we are unable to recreate thewar chariots, banners, sacred vessels, dancing girls, and Radames marching under acanopy carried by twelve officers.

Dance, sons of Egypt, circling round,And sing your mystic praises,As round the sun in mazesDance the bright stars ofnighI.

Then, the beautiful slave Aida sees her elderly father, the Ethiopian King Amonasro, being paraded among the prisoners. Such is the stuff of grand opera.
