This new international master’s degree program in Medicine and Sur-gery, taught in English, uses a multidisciplinary approach to train stu-dents to become doctors practicing in a diverse biomedical-social environment with interdisciplinary and intercultural professional skills.

In line with the guiding principles of Campus Bio-Medico University of Rome, teaching is entirely patient-centered and community-centered. A deep knowledge of ethical issues is applied to the use of advanced medical technology to promote healthcare through a humanistic ap-proach.

Providing training with a strong international cultural component, the program takes into account the features characterizing today’s mul-ti-ethnic society with its vast migrant population, paying special at-tention to diversity and the value of interreligious dialogue, to create the basis for understanding the cultural issues that impact healthcare professionals.

How the program is organized

The 6-year program provides a total of 360 ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) credits of which more than 60 are dedicated to training activities aimed at developing specific profession-al skills.

The program, organized in 12 semesters, offers 19 integrated courses: fundamentals of basic science (5 courses); fundamentals of medicine (4 courses); medical statistics and epidemiology (1 course); clinical medicine (8 courses); cardiovascular emergencies (1 course).

Courses on the principles of clinical methodology share a careful at-tention to the uniqueness of each patient and his or her needs, with a strong focus on personalized treatments.

Courses on pathology, pharmacology and diagnostic imaging are taught simultaneously throughout the 3rd, 4th and 5th year to integrate the study of different diseases in an embedded model, applying knowl-edge of appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic practices.

Through these integrated courses, students gradually become familiar with the concepts of interdisciplinary approach, inter-professionalism, health economics, the doctor’s social responsibility and patient’s edu-cation especially in relation to disease prevention.

The 6th year is entirely dedicated to training in a hospital and in other healthcare structures within the Lazio region.

The program ends with a thesis on a subject chosen by the student and which is presented to a commission of experts.

internationalstandards

The core contents of the program fully integrate the European specifi-cations for global standards in medical education defined in accord-ance with the World Federation on Medical Education concerning international basic standards and quality development of biomedical education (WFME Office, University of Copenhagen, 2007) and the Basic Medical Education WFME Global Standards for Quality Improve-ment - 2015 Revision (WFME Office Ferney-Voltaire, France Copenha-gen, Denmark 2015).

Outstanding features of the program

• Inter-professional education: fostering understanding of how med-ical conditions influence patients and their social and family envi-ronments.

• Solid preparation in basic sciences: providing broad knowledge of biologically complex structures and functions of the human organ-ism under normal conditions.

• Solid preparation in human sciences (anthropology, ethics, and bio-ethics): providing knowledge of the diverse cultures that constitute the social environment, which is crucial for physicians in a mul-ti-ethnic society that is constantly and rapidly evolving.

• Special attention to clinical skills: developing analytical and prob-lem-solving skills in medical practice.

• Special attention to ‘environmental’ skills: developing students’ abil-ity to assess the environmental, political and occupational impact of health and diseases; to assess a health service, its effective-ness, and its impact in economic terms, particularly by measuring its value as ratio between costs and expected benefits.

• Special attention to transversal soft skills: developing and consoli-dating self-directed learning and self-assessment skills, time man-agement skills, planning and organizational skills.

• Continuing professional development: fostering the habit of system-atically updating knowledge and skills.

Teaching is carried out through Problem-Based Learning (PBL). This teaching method uses complex real-world problems as the vehicle to stimulate student learning of theoretical concepts and principles as opposed to direct presentation of facts and concepts.

Students develop a host of core skills essential for physicians, such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills.

PBL provides opportunities for working in groups, finding and evaluat-ing research materials, and life-long learning.

The entire training process of this highly integrated academic pro-gram, starting with lesson planning and curriculum development is student-centered.

Students begin their professional training at the very start of the pro-gram through continuous contact with patients and colleagues, hence not only building confidence but also learning to work autonomously.

Students are provided with strong foundations in scientific methodol-ogy, statistical analysis and the practice of Evidence Based Medicine (EBM).

Students are given direct access to online resources through appropri-ately selected computer programs. Direct access develops their ability to use essential research tools and the selected programs foster their understanding of appropriate methods for addressing research issues.
