Capacity Building Programme under the aegis of Regional Training Centre,

Odisha Zone-II was conducted at DAV Public School, MCL, Kalinga Area on 10th

and 11th

of May 2017. The programme started at 9.30 am. Mr. K C Khuntia,

General Manager, MCL, Kalinga Area graced the occasion as the chief guest

and lighted the holy

lamp to mark the

beginning of the

programme.

Mr. S K Bhoi, Principal

of the host school, in his

welcome address

extended a warm

welcome to the Chief

Guest , the master

trainers and all the teacher participants from different schools to attend the

afore mentioned programme. In his deliberation Mr. Bhoi inspired the ignited

minds to keep themselves ready in order to shoulder new responsibilities

bestowed upon them in the back drop of changing circumstances and

expectations of the stake holders. He further approached the trainees and the

MTs as well to instill in the children the much needed scientific bent of mind so

that they must feel benefitted. Further Mr Bhoi threw some light on the

possible approach of the students keeping new exam pattern in mind.

The Chief Guest of the

occasion Mr K C

Khuntia, GM, Hingula

Area, at the outset

expressed his

happiness that such

programmes are being

organized by the RTC

to upgrade the

teachers’ skills. He said nation building depends on the attitude, behaviour and

hardwork of the teachers. He further desired that the teachers must keep

themselves abreast with the latest technology in the teaching learning

transactions

knowing it well that

now a days there

are many

distractions for the

young children, yet

teachers must

groom the children

for the future

world.

During the ice breaking session Master Trainer Mr R K Bedbak emphasized on

the need to enable the students enjoy every minute details of nature and

concern for preserving and beautifying nature with their newly acquired

scientific knowledge. While discussing the aims and objectives of the

workshop, MT Mr R K Padhi deliberated on the ways to enhance the teaching

capability by introducing learning by doing and by engaging them in different

scientific activities. He further very elaborately discussed the steps for

preparing lesson plans.

In the following session prepared lesson plan were demonstrated by the

teacher participants. The MTs and the resource persons very minutely

observed the presentations and kept adding their valuable suggestions on the

spot to bring about the target changes in the plans and approaches. This

session was not only engaging but also thought provoking. It is the culmination

of the participants’ imagination, strategy and plan regarding their activity in

the classes concerned. It was certainly nice to see the active participation of

the participants as well as the MTs & the RPs.

In the next session Mrs. Itishree Samal, PGT, Chemistry of the host school gave

a nice feedback on the lesson plans and unit plans. She said science teachers

should work together to make science enjoyable and effective. Knowledge

sharing is important, she said.

In the post lunch session; “Minimum Learning Objective” MT, Mr R K Padhi

presented a vibrant

PPT on the low

achievers. He

emphasized that the

low achievers have a

hard time in getting

motivated.

Inappropriate school

behaviour also

sometimes works as a

hindrance in making the path of learning a smooth one for the afore

mentioned type. In a very elaborate manner Mr Padhi suggested that teachers

should adopt flexibility in their approach to make a difference. Things should

be explained to these children in simple language to help them and that their

understanding can be checked through MCQs, Match making, gap filling etc. All

the participants were asked to prepare minimum learning materials on the

spot group wise followed by a video clip on ability grouping and its pros and

cons. Then the teacher participants were given ideas about the much awaited

e- lesson plan. MT, Mr Padhi urged the trainees to prepare e- lesson plans and

rubrics school wise. In the next module he discussed how to develop

assessment rubrics for activities followed by a group activity.

Later MT Mr Bedbak started e-lesson plan and discussed its purpose. He said

the e-lesson plan is exclusively for the children which can be shown to the

children directly. In order to reduce the burden of activity, e-lesson plans can

help a teacher to teach anything in a bookless manner. He also taught

extensively the various ways by which a lesson plan can be converted in to e-

lesson plan.

The day ended with a lot of activity at 6 pm and the next two hours [6-8 pm]

the participants spent in the school computer lab preparing the e-lesson plans.

Day-2 [11.05.2017]

The programme for the

second day started at 9

am with the

presentation of e-

lesson plan by the

participants. The MTs

Mr R.K.Padhi &

R.K.Bedbak observed

the endeavour and

innovation put in the

plans by the participant

and enriched them

with their valuable suggestions. In the next session Mr S K Bhoi, Principal of the

host school tried to lift the morale of the participants and made them mentally

prepared to shoulder the greater responsibility of nation building as was fore

seen by S Radhakrishnan. He urged the teachers that back home they would

come out of their comfort zones to shape the future of the nation and mankind

by imbibing positive and desirable values in the students.

The next session “Principles of Genetics- Made Easy” was dealt with by

Resource Person Mr U N Sahoo, PGT, Biology, DAV Kalinga Area. During his one

hour session he tried to elicit some interesting and practical methods and

activities to clear the concepts and confusions that the students are likely to

have , with the help of the constructive ideas he extracted from the teacher

participants. The session included a lot of interaction, it is hoped, would end

up bringing more and more clarity to the students.

In the next session Resource Person Mrs Sujata Mishra, of DAV JA, Dera

discussed in detail

how to develop

scientific thinking in

students taking

science as an enquiry

to develop ethical

attitude. She also

discussed the

essentials of critical

thinking. The chapter

under discussion was

Scattering of Light. It was a really highly informative session supported with

audio visual aids.

In the pre lunch session Mr Itishree Samal, PGT, Chemistry, DAV Kalinga Area,

conducted 4 demonstration activities based on micelle formation, diffusion of

liquids, exothermic

reaction and

decomposition reaction

in a quite effective way.

The engaging activities

were well appreciated

by one and all.

The programme was

followed by innovative

concepts and activities

by Mr R K Bedbak, MT, on the concept that air occupies space and exerts

pressure. He conducted an interesting activity to show the difference between

true solution and colloidal solution, to show the formation of gas during a

chemical reaction, to show that carbon dioxide is heavier than air, and a

special activity to show reflection by using laser light.

The post lunch session was taken

care of by the ever innovative MT,

Mr R K Padhi who demonstrated

and engaged everyone in different

mesmerizing activities based on

various concepts of Physics and

clarified the principles and

concepts behind each. This act was

highly appreciated by all. He

invited the participants to

demonstrate the concept by using low cost or no cost materials. The other half

of the session was taken by Mrs.

Rashmi Mohapatra who through

beautiful PPT presentation quite

extensively discussed Organisation

and Functions of Living Systems.

As a finishing touch to the two day

programme MT, Mr R K Bedbak,

presented the criteria through PPT

for preparing the MCQs. He said it

should be comprehension and critical thinking not just a recall activity. He then

urged the teacher trainees to prepare at least 5 MCQs by considering one

chapter and one content. The participants prepared the questions keeping in

mind the expectations of the Master Trainer and readily submitted the same.

Later the MTs analysed the questions and added their deliberations and

valuable suggestions to bring the designed impact and achieve the desired

goal.
