Background

The Marquis de Lafayette was a young French nobleman at the time the colonies declared their independence. He wanted to fight for the colonists against England. He was a valuable officer and helped convince the French king to have an alliance with America against the British

At first, France secretly supplied the Continental Army with supplies. The king was afraid the colonist would lose. After the first major patriotic victory, the king of France changed his mind and offered the Americans an alliance.

At the end of the revolution, nearly ten thousand slaves who fought for the colonies were freed by Virginians for their service in the Continental Army. Slavery continued in the colonies, and the new nation but was slowly abolished (ended) in the North. Slavery did not end in the South until the Civil War.
