The faith of this courageous Canaanite woman is in contrast to Peter’s faith in last week’s Gospel, which Jesus challenged his lack of faith when Jesus was walking out to him on the water. Jesus and the Canaanite woman

Today’s Gospel about Jesus’ interaction with the Canaanite wom-an is not only intriguing, but it is shocking as well. Jesus embodies God’s love, compassion, and mercy, so why would he initially ignore that faithful woman’s pleas for him to heal her daughter? The Ca-naanite woman was from a place of tension and bitterness, living in the border territories between the Jewish settlements and the Gentile lands. Her people were the bitter enemies of the Jews. No wonder why Jesus did not want to help her and her daughter. Yet, in her te-nacious persistence, Jesus recognizes her as a woman of great faith. I believe that Jesus grows in his understanding of his ministry in his in-teraction with her, he grows in his understanding that salvation is in-tended for all. This interaction is not only a learning moment for the Canaanite woman, but for Jesus as well. The faith of this courageous Canaanite woman is in contrast to Peter’s faith in last week’s Gospel, which Jesus challenged his lack of faith when Jesus was walking out to him on the water. As Jesus opened his heart to really listen to what the Canaanite woman had to say, perhaps we need to do more listen-ing, too. In addition, as the Canaanite woman was so persistent in her search for God and her search for help for her daughter, some-times we need to be as persistent on our own journey of faith.

SMALL GROUP EXPERI-ENCE THE JOURNEY . . . A WAY TO DEEPEN YOUR EXPE-RIENCE OF JESUS

In 3 weeks our parish will provide everyone an opportunity to sign up for The Journey, a six-week process of sharing, prayer, and re-flection that can help everyone—active pa-rishioner or not—grow in faith. The Journey brings us into contact with those who knew and encountered Jesus; through videos and sharing, their experience becomes real in our day . . . in our personal lives . . . in our relationships with God and others. We hope that many parishioners will sign up and help our parish grow in faith—so that more of our parishioners see themselves as followers of Jesus. Stop by the Parish School of Religion registration table in the Parish Hall following each to preview The Journey! Sign up Weekends: September 9/10 and 16/17 following the Masses

If you have an incoming 9th grader or 10th grader, good attendance to Sunday school is a requirement for Confirmation. This is not a Confirmation year for St. Jude but our diocese says two years of good faith formation is required to receive a Sacrament.

When the spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth; for

he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever her hears he

will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.

Adult Faith Formation

Join us beginning Sunday, September 10th from 9:45

—10:45am in the Parish Hall for Adult Faith For-

mation as we discover how to pray with Sacred Scrip-

ture.

Though prayer is one of the essentials of a thriving faith, we often feel

as if we’re talking to ourselves. Or, worse, we feel like we’re talking to

no one at all. How can something so vital to the faith be so elusive?

Now, the mystery of prayer is made clear through the engaging teach-

ing and cinematic artistry of the Augustine Institute in Prayer: Find-

ing Intimacy with God. In six sessions on three DVDs, renowned speak-

er Dr. Tim Gray masterfully uses the ancient Church's tradition of

lectio divina to show you the simple steps for making prayer an effort

of love and intimacy with God. Essential and accessible, this new

Lectio series is ideal for personal faith formation and small group

study.

Episode Listing:

1. Prayer: An Intimate Dialogue

2. Guigo’s Ladder: A Way of Ascent

3. Lectio and Meditatio: Climbing the First Rungs

4. Oratio: Conversation with God

5. Contemplatio: The Gaze of Love

6. Resolutio: Putting Love into Action

Catholic Charities Workshop Catholic Charities is sponsoring "Catholic Faith in Action" work-shops this fall in our diocese on the topics of Catholic Social Teaching, Parish Social Ministry, and Advocacy. Anyone involved

in parish leadership or social ministry activities or those who are wanting to learning more about living out the Gospel message in our lives and in our par-ish is invited to attend. It will be held at St Therese Catholic Church in South Jackson on Saturday, Sep-tember 16 from 8:30 am to 11:30 am. Father Lin-coln is planning to attend with any interested parish-ioners. Please contact Father Lincoln or Kelly McGregor if you are interested in attending.

Statement of Archbishop Charles Chaput of Philadelphia regarding Racial Violence in Charlottesville, Virginia Racism is a poison of the soul. It’s the ugly, original sin of our country, an illness that has never fully healed. Blending it with the Nazi salute, the relic of a regime that murdered millions, com-pounds the obscenity. Thus the wave of public an-ger about white nationalist events in Charlottesville this weekend is well warranted. We especially need to pray for those injured in the violence. But we need more than pious public state-ments. If our anger today is just another mental virus displaced tomorrow by the next distraction or outrage we find in the media, nothing will change. Charlottesville matters. It’s a snapshot of our public unraveling into real hatreds brutally expressed; a collapse of restraint and mutual respect now taking place across the country. We need to keep the im-ages of Charlottesville alive in our memories. If we want a different kind of country in the future, we need to start today with a conversion in our own hearts, and an insistence on the same in others. That may sound simple. But the history of our na-tion and its tortured attitudes toward race proves exactly the opposite.

AROUND THE DIOCESE

SAVE THE DATE! St. Joseph Catholic School is hosting their annual Open House, November 5. This is no ordinary school tour, but a student-inspired, performance-filled showcase. Incredible art, aca-

demics, theater, music and athletics - not to men-tion that one-of-a-kind spirit which makes St. Joe the exceptional place that it is. See for yourself the bright, shining soul of St. Joe. More details coming soon.

Save-The-Date: The 31th annual St. Joseph Catholic Church GermanFest is sched-uled for Sunday, September 24, 2017 from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Advance meal tick-ets are $6 and are available

from parishioners of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Ticket information is also available by calling the parish office at 601-856-2054. Meals the day of the festival will be $7.

As the school year gets underway, we ask for your prayers and support for the 11 seminarians who are

headed back to Louisiana to continue their formation. Catholic Extension is offering a $25,000 match for dioceses who raise $100,000 towards seminarian ed-ucation so if you have ever considered a gift, now is the perfect time. The diocesan Office of Stewardship and Development and Vocation Department is hosting three brunches to raise money for this effort. All are invited. Please make sure to RSVP. If you cannot attend a brunch, you can still offer a gift. To RSVP or donate, contact Pam McFarland at 601-960-8479 or email [email protected]. A Mass and brunch will be held at St. Paul’s in Flowood at 9 a.m. on Saturday, September 9th.
