CCD TIMES STARTING 9/9/2018 First session 9:55 am to 10:55 am
Second session 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm
TWENTY SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME B Humbly welcome the word that has been planted in you
and is able to save your souls.
Be doers of the word and not hearers only, deluding yourselves.
Religion that is pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this:
to care for orphans and widows in their affliction
and to keep oneself unstained by the world.
The second reading today from James forces us to examine our response to Christ and our daily living of the Good News. James makes a number
of points in this short passage that we should consider.
“Welcome the word that that has been planted in you…” we are reminded that the spirit of Christ has been planted in our hearts. First, through
baptism, we are made part of the Body of Christ—the Church—and we receive the gift of faith. Once Jesus has become part of our lives it is
impossible to forget the basic message. Because we belong to Christ we know in the deepest part of our hearts what is right and wrong and our
hearts are broken by the tragedy we see around us.
James challenges us to be “doers.” Because we belong to Christ we must do something to proclaim our faith. It is easy to hear the Word of God
and to be entertained by the insights and wisdom contained therein. But what good is faith, or a relationship with God, if nothing changes?
For James, proper religion is directed toward the care of the poor; orphans and widows. Most people today are not involved in direct outreach to
the poor or disadvantaged of our society, yet, we are capable of accomplishing in our own way great things for the sake of the Gospel. Being
mindful of how we interact with others, even in the simplest ways, can profoundly proclaim the Gospel. When we have been waiting too long in
line at the grocery store and become irritated how do we react? If we are able to put aside our irritation, which usually comes from our sense of
entitlement, and treat the checkout person with respect and kindness—we have effectively proclaimed our faith. We have shown, by action and
deed, that we believe that all people are due respect.
Day-to-day life experiences offer us the chance to grow spiritually. When we feel “entitled” we have the chance to stop and examine our motives
and the underlying error in our thinking—why do I feel that I am more important than someone else? (Remember the story of Lazarus and the rich
man) When we “look down” on people who are different to ourselves we have the chance to ask, Why? (Remember the story of Jesus and the
Samaritan woman) We need not be afraid of introspection or spiritual growth—by letting go of attitudes and preconceived notions that separate us
from the people around us and from God we can come to experience the peace and joy we seek in life.
