FAZtor ’s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora With the Feast of the Baptism of our Lord we offi-cially close the Christmas season. The spirit of Christmas lives on as we open the door for the

Year of Mercy.

I am sure most of you have already put away or stored your Christ-mas trees or gotten rid of your live ones. Whether fresh or recyclable Christmas trees, somehow, someday, the time will come when they will be not be usable. Just like the trees around our Church, some have withered from the lack of water or naturally gotten old. Some are also damaged because they were hit by cars or trucks or even by people. We will need to replace them somehow, someday, with all the complications of the City permit process. A “Donate-a-Tree Pro-ject” might sound like a good idea for the future, unless you have a better one. Share your talents and time with us!

Just before Christmas we had the funeral for a priest of the Archdio-cese of San Francisco, the former pastor of St. John of God, Fr. Tom Seagrave. The funeral was presided by our Archbishop Cordileone, with Bishop Wang and Bishop Justice and quite a number of priests. The funeral mass was held at St. Paul Church.

Since I did not know how to get to St. Paul Church, I went to the computer and “googled” it. Yelp provided me the needed information. Yelp also provides reviews, so I read some comments about how beautiful the church is. Indeed it is a beautiful church and now al-ways associated with the two “Sister Act” movies that were filmed there.

Now this made me curious about what people say about Holy Name Church. So, I also “googled” Holy Name and read some reviews. The latest was a very good review about the church, especially about the Midnight Mass on Christmas. There were other good and positive reviews, but there is always the other side of the coin and this is what someone wrote:

“Beautiful Church that's why I gave them a 3 star. The services are nice. They have a nice band and choir, a Catholic service very tradi-tional. However, today the lead pastor talked about donations for more than 10 minutes. Telling the whole church to donate, how they owed a % of money to the church. And on top of that how everyone owed to donate for other things as well... I came to church to be with GOD not to sit to you and listen to you tell me I owe to give money. Everyone already knows how donations to the church works, how much it keeps the community running, this was inappropriate and you should not spend a whole 10-15 min talking about money in a church service. “

I presumed the lead pastor was me talking about the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal (AAA), since it was written about the time of that campaign. I also presumed she was not a parishioner and it was the only time she went to Holy Name, since that’s the only time I talked about money, which of course, every pastor has to. I am smiling with no further comment! I just wish you well as we enter the Year of 3Ms: “The Year of Mercy, The Year of the Monkey and the Year of Money.”

A MESSAGE FROM FATHER ARNOLD A Happy and Better New Year, Dear Friends!

What a journey 2015 has been for all of us. And what will 2016 be like? We do not know what the future holds, but we know who holds the future in His hands. Have you ever been just sitting there and all of a sudden you feel like doing something nice for someone you care for? THAT'S GOD…He talks to you through the Holy Spirit. Have you ever been down and out and nobody seems to be around for you to talk to? THAT'S GOD... He wants you to talk to Him. Have you ever been thinking about somebody that you haven't seen in a long time and then next thing you know... you see them or receive a phone call from them? THAT'S GOD... There is no such thing as "coincidence." Have you ever received something wonderful that you didn't even ask for? Like money in the mail, a debt that had mysteriously been cleared, or a coupon to a department store where you had just seen something you wanted, but couldn't afford? THAT'S GOD...He knows the desires of your heart… Have you ever been in a situation and you had no clue how it is going to get better, but now as you look back on it, you got through it? THAT'S GOD...He passes us through tribulation to see a brighter day. May GOD always be our constant guide on our journey this new year 2016!

TOYS FOR TOTS In addition to the many toys brought in, Holy Name School donated $500.00 to Toys for Tots. Thank you all for your generous donations.

The Feast of the Baptism of the Lord The mystery of Christ’s baptism in the Jordan by St John, the Precur-

sor, proposes the contemplation of an already adult Jesus. This mystery is infi-nitely linked to the Solemnities of the Lord’s birth and the Epiphany that we have just celebrated, as in some ways it takes up and represents their signifi-cance to us. At Christmas we have con-templated the human birth of the Word incarnate by the Virgin Mary. In the 4th century, the Fathers of the Church deep-ened the understanding of the faith with regard to the Christmas mystery in the light of Jesus’ Humanity. They spoke of

the Incarnation of the Word already working like the ‘Christification’ of that humanity that he had assumed from His mother. Or put in simpler terms: Jesus is the Christ from the first instant of conception in Mary’s spotless womb because He Himself, with His Divine Power, conse-crated, anointed and ‘Christified’ that human nature with which He became incarnate. In the mystery of the Epiphany, we then meditated on Christ’s manifestation to all nations that was represented by the Magi, the wise men from the East, who came to adore the Child. Now, in the mystery of Christ’s Baptism in the Jordan River, we again encounter and represent the truth of the Lord’s incarnation and His manifestation as the Christ. Jesus’ Baptism is in fact His defin-itive manifestation as the Messiah or Christ to Israel, and as the Son of the Father to the entire world. Here we find the dimension of the Epiphany which was His manifestation to all nations. The Father’s voice from heaven shows that Jesus of Nazareth is the eternal Son and the descent of the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove shows the Trinitarian nature of the Christian God. The true and unique God, Fa-ther, Son, and Holy Spirit, shows Himself in Christ, through Him, with Him and in Him. The Baptism in the Jordan returns to the great Christmas theme of ‘Christification,’ Jesus of Nazareth's spiritual anointing, His presentation as the Anointed One par excellence, the Messiah or the One sent by the Father for the salvation of mankind. The Spirit that descended on Jesus shows and seals in an incontrovertible way the ‘Christification’ of Jesus’ humanity that the Word had already fulfilled from the first moment of His miraculous conception by Mary. Jesus, from the very beginning, was always the Lord’s Christ, He was always God. Yet, His one, true humanity, that which is perfect in every way, as the Gospel records, constantly grew in natural and supernatural perfection. ‘And Jesus increased in wisdom, in stature, and in favour with God and with men’ (Lk2:52). In Israel at 30 years of age, one reached full maturity and therefore could become a master. Jesus came of age and the Spirit, descending and remaining on Him, defini-tively consecrated His whole being as the Christ. The same Spirit, that descended on the water of the River Jordan wafted over the waters during the first creation (Gen 1:2). Therefore, the Baptism in the Jordan presents yet another truth: that Jesus has started a new creation. He is the second man (1 Cor 15:47) or the last Adam (1 Cor 15:45), that comes to repair the first Adam’s guilt. He does this as the Lamb of God that takes away our sins. ‘Looking at the events in light of the Cross and Resurrection, the Christian people realised what happened: Jesus loaded the burden of all mankind’s guilt upon His shoulders; he bore it down into the depths of the Jordan. He inaugurated his public activity by stepping into the place of sinners’ (Joseph Ratzinger, Jesus of Nazareth, Bloomsbury 2007, p 18). Excerpted from the Congregation for the Clergy
