The doctrine of the Assumption says that at the end of her life on earth Mary was assumed, body and soul, into heaven, just as Enoch, Elijah, and perhaps others had been before her. It’s also necessary to keep in mind what the Assumption is not. Some people think Catholics believe Mary “ascended” into heaven. That’s not correct. Christ, by his own power, ascended into heaven. Mary was assumed or taken up into heaven by God. She didn’t do it under her own power. The Church has never formally defined whether she died or not, and the integrity of the doctrine of the Assumption would not be impaired if she did not in fact die, but the almost universal consensus is that she did die. Pope Pius XII, in Munificentissimus Deus (1950), defined that Mary, “after the completion of her earthly life” (note the silence regarding her death), “was assumed body and soul into the glory of heaven.”The possibility of a bodily assumption before the Second Coming is suggested by Matthew 27:52–53: “[T]he tombs also were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised, and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many.” Did all these Old Testament saints die and have to be buried all over again? There is no record of that, but it is recorded by early Church writers that they were assumed into heaven, or at least into that temporary state of rest and happiness often called “paradise,” where the righteous people from the Old Testament era waited until Christ’s resurrection (cf. Luke 16:22, 23:43; Heb. 11:1–40; 1 Pet. 4:6), after which they were brought into the eternal bliss of heaven.

St. Mary of the Annunciation9 August 2015

St. Marys Church is open for visitation on weekdays from 6:30am till 12 Noon.

9 August 2015 Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary TimeSaint Mary of the Annunciation

St. Mary’s Parish News Ready for another exciting School of Christian Formation year? Registration opens 16 August! Download your registration form at http://www.catholic-doc.org/saintmarys/ or pick up a copy either from the parish hall on Sundays or from the office at 119 Broad Street during the week. Classes begin Sunday, 13 September!

Music at St. Mary’s: Plans are being set in motion for the expansion of the Music Program at St. Mary’s Church, beginning this coming Fall. This past year, we started a Children’s Choir here at St. Mary’s. Due to a very limited rehearsal schedule, the choir, unfortunately, was only able to sing five times during the school year. Starting on Sunday morning, 13 September, we will begin weekly rehearsals for the youth of St. Mary’s from the 2nd grade and up. Rehearsals will be held on Sunday mornings in the 4th grade classroom on the 2nd floor of the Parish Hall Building from 10:45 until 11:15am. This will be at the beginning of the Sunday School period, after which the children will adjourn to their respective Religious School classes. It is the current plan to have the Children’s Choir participate in the 9:30 Masses on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month during the school year. The Children’s Choir will also sing for the Christmas Pageant on Christmas Eve and remain to lead the congregation at the 4:00pm Christmas Eve Mass. On Good Friday, 25 March, at noon, the children will sing at the Live Stations of the Cross Liturgy, led by the children of the Religious School. With the support of all parents of the children of St. Mary’s, as well as the incredible, dedicated teachers of the Religious School, I know we will have an exciting year. The Adult Choir at St. Mary’s is also looking forward to a period of expansion this year. I am asking that all members who may have thought about singing in the choir to consider joining us this year. I would like for the choir to present some special musical programs this year. This would not only be a great opportunity for the congregation, but would serve to welcome members of the whole Charleston Community in order that they might experience the beauty and solemnity that is St. Mary’s. Beginning 9 September, the St. Mary’s Adult Choir will rehearse on Wednesday Evenings from 7:00 to 9:00pm as well as Sunday mornings from 8:30 to 9:10am in the Church choir loft. I whole-heartedly encourage all persons join with what promises to be a fine group of singers this year.

Wednesday Evening Confessions: There will be NO 5:30pm confessions during the Summer months. Confessions on Wednesday evenings will resume in the Fall.

As the Class of 2019 at The Citadel is beginning soon there is a need for 4th Class sponsor families

for International and American cadets from far away. The Citadel has loads of incoming knobs requesting host families but does not have enough sponsors to accommodate everyone. There is a particular need for Catholic Sponsor families for Catholic freshmen. These cadets could really benefit from having a place where they might decompress and have a home away from home. If you are willing and able to serve as a surrogate parent, here is your chance to make a big difference in the life of a lowly knob.

You can do as much or as little with a sponsor knob as you wish. Some families invite their knobbies to their home every weekend. Some visit with their knobbies once per month. Your knobs can truly become part of your family and their family yours. Meaningful bonds are created each year.

This program is designed to help knobs that live further away than South Carolina, North Carolina or Georgia and those that live the furthest away are the first to be matched. You can request a knob from a certain cadet company, or from a particular state, or a specific major, or a knob who likes fishing!

If you are interested in serving as a 4th Class Sponsor, drop an email to [email protected] and she will send you the application form to complete. You will need three (3) references to apply. Should you have any questions or need more information, do not hesitate to contact her. She is ready to help.
