"THE SON OF MAN HIMSELF DID NOT COME TO BE SERVED BUT TO SERVE, AND TO GIVE HIS LIFE AS A RANSOM FOR MANY"
For many people, greatness is measured in terms of the three “p’s” - power, possessions and pleasure. Jesus teaches a new way to glory, the way of humble service. Really great people are those who put themselves at the service of others. TODAY’S READINGS: First Reading: Isaiah 53:10-11. The suffering servant takes our faults on himself. Second Reading: Hebrews 4:14-16. With Jesus as our high priest, we can have confidence in approaching the throne of grace when we need help. Gospel: Mark 10:35-45. James and John are looking for glory, but Jesus shows them the way of humble service. ***************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************** 2015 FEDERAL ELECTION GUIDE: Canada’s Federal Election is on Monday, October 19th. Please refer to the Ca-
nadian Conference of Catholic Bishops 2015 Federal Election Guide, which was included in the bulletin on September
13th together with a Pastoral Letter from Bishop Gary Gordon. You can also find it at http://www.rcdvictoria.org/

JOURNEY OF HEARTS AND HANDS - 2015 ANNUAL APPEAL: Today we kickoff our Annual Appeal along with all other parishes and missions throughout our Diocese. Your generosity will assist our parish and extend to countless people in need throughout our Diocese. Pope Francis’ call to care for each other reminds us of how personal giving can be. Our theme, i share, we care reflects Pope Francis` thoughts. Please consider pledging to this worthwhile endeavour. Parish Goal: $62,000. Our parish pro-ject this year is to help create our Blessed Sacrament Chapel.
CHILDREN’S LITURGY NEWS: Children attending Children’s Liturgy are asked, if possible, to bring a coin with them to offer for the support of the child our Parish is sponsoring as part of the Children’s Liturgy Program, through the Catholic charity Chalice. Our intention is to allow our children to connect with a less fortunate child, and to live the Gospel message by praying for the child and making a small weekly coin offering for his support. The child’s name is Benson. Benson is 5 years old. His family is very poor. They live in a small house with a thatched grass roof, in Serenje, Zambia. Our contribu-tion will help with Benson’s schooling, offered by the Sisters of Mary Immaculate. It is our expectation that the children will receive a letter from or on behalf of Benson at some point during the year which will bring to life their Christian connection to this young boy. The Children’s Liturgy leaders know that not every child will remember to bring a coin each week. They will take steps to ensure that children don’t feel left out when contributions are made.
UNITED IN LOVE… LET US GO TO SERVE! Today, in all the parishes of the world, in Africa, Asia, Oceania, America and Eu-rope, we celebrate World Mission Sunday. It is the Sunday of solidarity and sharing with our poorest brothers and sisters of the Univer-sal Church. Today, we celebrate our vocation as missionaries sent to proclaim the Good News. For the 1,250 dioceses which are still under the responsibility of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, let us be generous so that they can achieve their pastoral projects for the poorest people. They are part of the more than 6,000 projects that are supported through this unique collection. Thank you very much for your generosity!
WOMEN’S SUPPORT GROUP: Tuesday October 20th, after the noon Mass, in the library. For more infor-mation please call Helen McLellan at 250-595-8090 or Clarice Durnerin at 778-265-1004.
LET’S MAKE CANADA A CLIMATE LEADER! In December, world leaders will be meeting in Paris at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP21) to negotiate a binding and universal agreement on the world’s climate. For this agreement to be effective at avoiding future climate-related disasters, the global temperature can’t rise more than 2°C over the coming years. In order to achieve this, however, countries like Canada will need to transition to renewable energies, and move away from fossil fuels. We invite you to sign a Development and Peace Action Card, which will be distributed at mass on Oct. 24/25 asking the Prime Minister to sign on to an agreement at COP21 that sets the target to keep the rise in temperature below 2°C and to be a leader in achieving that target. On the card, you can also share with the Prime Minister your own personal action to help reduce climate change. Join us to learn more and dis-cuss climate change issues on Tues. Oct. 20 at 7 pm in Our Lady of Lourdes Hall.
LOCAL WORLDWIDE MARRIAGE ENCOUNTER WEEKEND: At the Dorchester Best Western, Nanaimo BC on November 6-8, 2015. Learn a new way to communicate, and turn your good marriage into a great marriage! There is no group sharing. Register at: 604-876-7298 or [email protected]
