MASON TO CELEBRATE HOLIDAYS ON NOVEMBER 23 WITH PARADE & MORE Every year about this time, we in Mason get our Big Santa and mailbox up at the corner of Jefferson and Ash Streets, we put our downtown holiday decorations on streetlights, set out seasonal plants in our downtown flower planters, our area merchants start to offer holiday values, and Express Tree Service strings lights on the large Christmas tree on the Ingham County Courthouse lawn. Those are the signs that we in Mason are getting ready for Friday, November 23. That’s the day after Thanksgiving and a full month before Christmas Eve. That afternoon and evening our community holds its annual Mason Holiday celebration. For the fifth year, Dart Container Corporation is the presenting sponsor of the Mason Holiday Celebration. “We are proud to have Dart Container sponsor the 2007 parade and the day’s events. We also thank the folks at Lear Corporation for again allowing us to start the parade in their parking lot,” said Debbie Cwiertniewicz, chair of the celebration for our Mason Area Chamber of Commerce. She also encourages local folks to help with the day’s and evening’s events by volunteering. You can contact the Chamber at (517) 676-1046 or at [email protected] by e-mail. Mason’s popular evening lighted parade and the lighting of the community’s Christmas tree at 6:30 p.m. are the biggest of the several events slated. Last year, the parade featured 22 units including the special “Courthouse Float” from Dart Container. “The City of Mason is also an important partner. They help by closing streets and providing traffic coordination. We are again responding to their request for improved public safety this year by letting parade participants know that they are not to throw candy or get on or off any unit that is in motion,” Cwiertniewicz added. The lighted parade steps off through the Cobblestone Village Antiques District at 6:30 p.m. and proceeds to downtown Mason. The route is Mason Street to Columbia to State to Maple. The parade then circles the Courthouse by turning right on Jefferson, then left on Ash, Barnes and Maple Street before stopping in the 100 block of west Maple. Lighted units will represent many area groups and businesses and will include CATA, Dart Container Corporation, MDOT, Two Men & a Truck, Potter Park Zoo, ServiceMaster Clean, Granger Container, and many more lighted vehicles and floats. Commander Bob Raab will lead volunteers and members of the American Legion Browne/Cavender Post 148 in keeping the parade organized, but this year another Legion member will have an additional duty. Don Jacot, in his role as the Chamber’s 2007 Citizen of the Year, will officially light the Christmas tree on the Courthouse square at 6:30 p.m. This year, the community Christmas tree will have 1200 new energy efficient LED lights, thanks to the City of Mason, the Mason Downtown Development Authority, and American Legion Post 148 as the Chamber’s decorations sponsor. Also downtown, near the tree before the parade, will be a welcome by City of Mason mayor Leon Clark, music from the Mason High School Santa Band, and more. Food and warm drinks will be available on the square from Mason A&W Restaurant, Mason Optimist Club and several downtown businesses. Santa and Mrs. Claus arrive at the end of the parade and then meet up with Mason Area Historical Society members who will take them back over to the museum on Oak Street to meet children and continue the fun over there. Also, a living nativity will be presented downtown on the Courthouse square by Eden United Brethren Church following the parade. A publication of the 148 E. GERALD SMITH WINS BIG

AT MACC RAFFLE PARTY

Gerald Smith of Mason

won a 1989 white Corvette

convertible in a recent raffle,

but he also held another

ticket to win the second

prize as well. His good

luck held out right to the end

at the sixth annual Mason

Area Chamber of

Commerce’s raffle party at

the Ingham County Fairgrounds.

The October 20 event was a licensed raffle (MLR 91324) with net

proceeds going to partially fund the Chamber’s “Hometown U.S.A.”

community investments and programs, including parades; banners;

community identity; and visitors’ center operations. Many

volunteers worked very hard to make the Chamber’s raffle and party

a success.

“This year, about 200 people enjoyed a fine steak dinner catered by

Darrell’s Market,” said organizer Ron Tatro. “Beverages and

snacks were served by Liz Hogg and Carl Howard. Assisted by

Robin King and Jeff Haueter, Jim Hyde led several lively auctions

throughout the party to add to the fun. Arnold Short of the County

Seat Old Car Club

won the ticket

sellers prize for the

sixth straight year.

Kim Gorrell, Kathy

Smith, Rich Reid,

Peter Robinson,

Carl Howard and

many others were

also in our ticket

seller’s hall of

fame,” added Tatro.

The Chamber is

grateful to the

many partners who

helped make the

event successful,

especially Holt

Auto Sales, Dart

Bank, Mason

State Bank, and

others. “We

couldn’t do it

without the behind

the scenes

assistance of our

dedicated

volunteers,” said

Tatro. Flood Reid

Insurance Agency, Independent Bank, B-Dry Systems,

ServiceMaster Clean, and others had successful “parties within a

party” and used the MACC raffle party for business-building.

Everyone who registered for the loser’s gift drawing also got a

coupon for a free A&W root beer float, courtesy of the Mason A&W

Restaurant. The next MACC raffle party is scheduled for Saturday

evening, October 18, 2008.

Banks and the Salvation Army. “We can designate some of the

meals to stay in the Mason area,” says Liz. Luttrell-Wilson of

Like last year, you’ll also enjoy the delightful live holiday music

from harpist Kelly Yoakam. You’ll just love the wonderful food of

the “Taste of Mason” provided by area restaurants and caterers.

And there will be door prizes. But it is the silent auction and live

auction item values that will make you reach for your wallet. You

can snap up some really great gifts and finish your Christmas

shopping in style.

The December “Mason In Motion” Newsletter will list all of the

auction items in a detailed catalogue. Just make sure the party is on

operating name to Broadstripe. This change reflects the company’s

new mission to improve system reliability, introduce advanced

products and services, and provide top quality customer care.

Extensive system upgrades and improvements have begun in the

three regions operated by Broadstripe. Substantially increased

staffing at the corporate and regional levels is also underway.

Broadstripe president and CEO Bill Shreffler said, “We intend to
