Walk Away Chill Out Program

Senior article

Paul Stanley, father of one punch victim Matthew Stanley andspokesperson for the Matthew Stanley Foundation Walk AwayChill Out Program, visited Maryborough State High School onThursday 18 May and presented to the year 12 cohort. Heshared Matthew’s tragic story and asked students to just takea ‘microsecond’ to consider actions and their consequences.Paul’s extremely powerful message resonated with all students. We thank the Matthew Stanely Foundation for finding the timeto fit Maryborough State High School into their travellingschedule and hope their visits can continue in the future.

“The presentation the other day showed me howimportant every person’s life is. When he told us all toclose our eyes and think of a loved one and picture thelast words that were said, it automatically took me towhen my uncle died in a hospital bed in front of me. Alsohim saying what pain his family went through to have toturn the life support off made me feel it inside. I wouldrecommend that everyone should think about what couldbe the outcome after punching someone and wonder ifthey would be able to handle the guilt of ending a life.” –anonymous Year 12 response.

“On Thursday the 18th of May, there was a presentationwhich was a real eye opener. The presentation wasabout how one punch can kill.

The life of Matthew Stanley was taken in 2007 after adrunken misunderstanding over a girl. I felt distraughtafter the presentation as the person most closest tome passed before Christmas 2016. This presentationbrought all the good and bad memories back. Seeingother students crying and tearing up broke my heart.I hope that our year 12 cohort, who viewed thepresentation and spoke to Matt’s father personally, asI did, really wake up and realise that risking the life ofsomeone else is never worth small banter after a party. It’s unfortunate this has happened. Matthew’s family isso strong. I would never want any family to go throughthis pain.” – Summah Bryce, Year 12 student

Australian Curriculum: Languages – Japanese

The second unit of work in ‘Curriculum to Classroom (C2C)/ Australia Curriculum: Languages – Japanese’ program atMaryborough State High School is ‘School to School’. In particular, students will be able to read all days of the weekin Romaji, Hiragana and Kanji; write core and non-core schoolsubjects offered at Maryborough State High School in Hiraganaand Katakana; listen for and identify school subjects traditionallyoffered in Japanese sister schools; and, communicate subjectsstudied in a certain period on a certain day of the week usingschool timetables sent to us by students of Onuma Junior HighSchool.

In a reciprocal gesture, rather than writing and sending bypost a timetable in Hiragana to our two sister schools, ourstudents will instead learn how to create a timetable in Englishand Japanese on the Pages App on a set of iPads specificallyassigned to all Japanese classes. Once completed, studentscan ‘airdrop’ their summative task to their Japanese teachers,Ms Liu or Mr Jeffers, who will email them to Japanese Englishteachers at Onuma Junior High School and Showa High Schoolrespectively in Saitama, Japan.

Semester ReportingWe are fast approaching the halfway mark of the school year.As always students will be assessed and reported on at thistime with report cards being issued early in Term 3.

During the first half of 2017 some dedicated staff membershave been working on developing a new set of reportingcomments that will be used for semester 1 reporting. Thesecomments have been developed to better communicate tostudents and their caregivers the current progress in each ofthe subject areas being undertaken.

At Maryborough State High School we believe in GrowthMindset and that intelligence can be developed if the studentand their environment has a positive outlook on learning. Youwill see this type of thinking reflected in the new commentsdeveloped for student reporting.

Sometimes a grade itself does not fully illustrate how a studentis performing in a particular subject area. Another addition tothe report card will be a graph format for each subject areashowing the A to E spread of student achievement. This is togive students and caregivers an indication of their progress inrelation to the whole subject cohort.
