JANUARY 01, 2017 SOLEMNITY OF MARY, THE HOLY MOTHER OF GOD
Today the Church celebrates the Solemnity of Mary, Mother
of God, our Lady's greatest title. This feast is the octave of
Christmas.
In the modern Roman Calendar only Christmas and Easter
enjoy the privilege of an octave. According to the 1962 Missal
of St. John XXIII the Extraordinary Form of the Roman
Rite, today is the Solemnity of Circumcision of Our Lord.
A plenary indulgence may be gained by reciting or singing
the hymn Veni Creator Spiritus on the first day of the year.
This hymn is traditionally sung for beginnings of things,
calling on the Holy Spirit before endeavoring something new.

JANUARY 01, 2017 SOLEMNITY OF MARY, THE HOLY MOTHER OF GOD
Mary, the Mother of God
Like the Churches of the East, Rome wished to honor the Virgin Mother of God
during the days after Christmas. As a result the Natale S. Mariae ("Anniversary
of St. Mary") made its appearance on January 1 in the seventh century; it has
accurately been called "the first Marian feast of the Roman liturgy." — The
Church at Prayer.
On New Year's Day, the octave day of Christmas, the Church celebrates the So-
lemnity of the Holy Mother of God. The divine and virginal motherhood of the
Blessed Virgin Mary is a singular salvific event: for Our Lady it was the foretaste and cause of her
extraordinary glory; for us it is a source of grace and salvation because "through her we have re-
ceived the Author of life" (127).
The solemnity of 1 January, an eminently Marian feast, presents an excellent opportunity for liturgi-
cal piety to encounter popular piety: the first celebrates this event in a manner proper to it; the sec-
ond, when duly catechised, lends joy and happiness to the various expressions of praise offered to Our
Lady on the birth of her divine Son, to deepen our understanding of many prayers, beginning with
that which says: "Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us, sinners.”

Happy New Year !
In the West, 1 January is an inaugural day marking the beginning of the civil year. The faithful
are also involved in the celebrations for the beginning of the new year and exchange "new
year" greetings. However, they should try to lend a Christian understanding to this custom
making of these greetings an expression of popular piety. The faithful, naturally, realize that
the "new year" is placed under the patronage of the Lord, and in exchanging new year greetings they implic-
itly and explicitly place the New Year under the Lord's dominion, since to him belongs all time (cf. Ap 1, 8;
22,13)(128).
New Year greetings also include an expression of hope for a peaceful New Year. This has profound biblical,
Christological and incarnational origins. The "quality of peace" has always been invoked throughout history
by all men, and especially during violent and destructive times of war.
The Holy See shares the profound aspirations of man for peace. Since 1967, 1 January has been designated
"world day for peace."
Popular piety has not been oblivious to this initiative of the Holy See. In the light of the new born Prince of
Peace, it reserves this day for intense prayer for peace, education towards peace and those values inextricably
linked with it, such as liberty, fraternal solidarity, the dignity of the human person, respect for nature, the
right to work, the sacredness of human life, and the denunciation of injustices which trouble the conscience of
man and threaten peace.

Living Catholic in the 808:
A Mother’s Love
By: Edwina Fujimoto
Religious Education Coordinator
St. Benedict Parish, Captain Cook
(How does a parent survive the unthinkable?
Breanna Fujimoto, the beautiful daughter of
Edwina Fujimoto was fatally injured in an
automobile accident last September. In the
midst of her great sorrow, Edwina offers us her
reflection on our Blessed Mother.)
“Mary, Mother of God, was told a sword will
pierce her heart and I think about how she had to
watch her son be scourged, ridiculed throughout
the streets carrying his cross and then cruci-
fied...and I think of the pain in my heart...nothing
compared to hers. That sword must have stabbed,
twisted, shaken, pulled out and stabbed again.
The pain in the hearts of moms and dads when
they lose a child just doesn't go away -- at least
this is what other moms and dads have shared. I
don't like it but I don't want to lose it either. My
pain is like nothing I've ever felt before and I've
lost loved ones.
God would never hurt us so deeply if for nothing.
Mary hurt, but without her sorrow we would not
have our salvation. I am thankful to have been
blessed with Breanna for 21 year; the pain is
worth it. The love and joy she filled me with is
more than I can measure, even greater joy than
the heart-wrenching pain I feel now.”
Josephine Schulmeister
Long-time parishioner, Josephine Schulmeister,
passed away on December 1, 2016. Josephine was
active at MSOS, having served in the Music
ministry, Collection Counter ministry, and the
former Altar and Rosary ministries for many, many
years. Her funeral service will take place at MSOS,
Tuesday, January 3, 2017, Visitation: 10:30 am—
11:00 am, Mass: 11:00 am, Burial: 12:45 pm,
Diamond Head Memorial Park Cemetery.
Monsignor Gary L. Secor
From: Most Reverend Larry Silva
Bishop of Honolulu
It is my great pleasure to announce that our Holy
Father, Pope Francis, has named Father Gary Secor
a Chaplain to His Holiness. He will now have the title
“Monsignor Gary Secor.” This is an honorary title
given to priests who are outstanding in their witness
to Jesus and their service to the people of God.
Monsignor Secor currently serves as the Vicar
General and Moderator of the Curia of the Diocese
of Honolulu and as the Rector of the Cathedral
Basilica of Our Lady of Peace. In the past he has
served as pastor of several parishes and as Vicar for
Clergy. He is well known throughout the Diocese as a
hard-working, devoted and faith-filled priest.
Though the title of Monsignor takes effect
immediately, we will have a special Investiture
Ceremony at the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of
Peace within the next couple of months to celebrate
this honor bestowed on Monsignor Secor by our
Holy Father. The date will be announced in the near
future.
We thank God for Monsignor Secor and all the
exemplary service he has given to the Diocese of
Honolulu!

SUNDAY SCRIPTURE READINGS:
FIRST READING: Numbers 6:22-27 -- This first reading is a pas-
sage commonly called, “the priestly blessing,” which was to be pro-
nounced at the end of an act of ritual worship. When God’s name is
invoked over the people, it bestows positive power in their entire life.
SECOND READING: Galatians 4:4-7 -- In this reading, Paul’s
major purpose is to defend and clarify his views of Christ in the face of
those who opposed his preaching: human salvation through the Law or
through grace in Christ. Paul upholds both the divinity and humanity of
Jesus the Christ.
GOSPEL: Luke 2:16-21 -- In this Gospel, Luke raises up a theme
he will repeat often: God has come in Jesus to save, turning first
of all to the lowly, the poor, the outcast, and the despised, includ-
ing women and sinners. This Gospel begins by drawing to a close
Luke’s account of the shepherds’ response to the message of a
Savior’s birth in Bethlehem.
