THE FACE OF JESUS In all the readings for this Sunday we can look at the face of Jesus. There are two Gospel passages, both from the Gospel of Luke. The first tells of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem on the back of a donkey. Crowds greeted him with shouts of “Hosanna!” The second tells of Jesus’ departure from Jerusalem, carrying the cross on his back. The same crowds derided him and shouted for his crucifixion. We first see a face shining with glory, but in a few short days a face dark with blood and sorrow. Set between these two contrasting Gospel passages are equally contrasting readings from the Hebrew and Christian scriptures. Isaiah describes a suffering servant who willingly submits to beating and humiliation, not even turning away his face. He knows he belongs to God and will not be put to shame. Paul writes to the Philippians of Christ Jesus, the true Suffering Servant, who willingly emptied himself to become human. But this man, with a very human face, has now been exalted by God above all others.

EL ROSTRO DE JESÚS En todas las lecturas de este domingo vemos el rostro de Je-sús. Hay dos pasajes del Evangelio, ambos del Evangelio de Lucas. El primero nos narra la entrada triunfal de Jesús en Jerusalén montado en un burro y la multitud gritando a voz en cuello: “¡Hosanna!” El segundo nos relata su salida de Jeru-salén cargando la cruz. La misma multitud se burla y pide su crucifixión. Primero vemos un rostro radiante de gloria, pero pocos días después lo vemos cubierto de sangre y de dolor. Entre estos dos contrastantes pasajes del Evangelio escucha-mos lecturas igualmente contrastantes de las Escrituras he-breas y cristianas. Isaías describe a un siervo que, sin resistir, ofrece sus espaldas a los que le golpean. Él sabe que Yahvé es su Señor y que no será avergonzado. Pablo escribe a los fili-penses sobre Cristo Jesús, el verdadero servidor que, siendo de condición divina, no se aferró a su igualdad con Dios sino que se despojó de ella y llegó a ser semejante a los hombres. Pero a este hombre, con un rostro tan humano, Dios lo en-grandeció y le concedió el Nombre que está sobre todo nom-bre.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Next weekend, many churches provide palms to be carried in the opening moments of the liturgy, as we gratefully recall Jesus’ entry into the holy city of Jerusalem. The children who greeted him on that day used what was both handy and traditional, since palms were carried to inaugurate the joyful harvest feast of Succoth. To this day, faithful Jews are directed to take a beautiful palm branch, green and straight as possible, called a lulav, and bind it with three myrtle branches fifteen inches long, and two longer willow branches. At the end of the temple service, everyone carries the lulav, circling the sanctuary in a dance called the Hoshanot, singing hymns of joy. In other climates, Jews and Christians alike have had to make accommodations over the years. In Italy, everyone carries olive branch-es today, often brought from their own garden. In England, forsythia branches are preferred, a relative of the olive, sign of peace. Ger-mans prefer pussywillows, and others look for flowering spring branches. In our part of the world, what do you think would be the best choice to express joy and welcome, and to remind us of the joy of Christ’s victory even as we prepare to commemorate his passion?

SEMANA SANTA La Semana Santa, es la semana más importante de todo el año litúrgico. Comienza el Domingo de Ramos y culmina el Domingo de Resurrección. En esta semana, celebramos el TRIDUO PASCUAL (muerte y resurrección de Cristo). Esta es una semana especial para los católicos, porque en ella, conmemoramos la vida, pasión, muerte y resurrección de Nuestro Señor Jesucristo. Hacemos un recorrido breve de los días más importantes: Domingo de Ramos: re-cordamos a Cristo- entrando triunfalmente a Jerusalén- el pueblo lo aclama como rey, lo vitorean, ¡HOSANA AL HI-JO DE DAVID! ¡BENDITO EL QUE VIENE EN NOMBRE DEL SEÑOR! Este día es un anticipo al gran triunfo de Cristo sobre la muerte. JUEVES SANTO: inicia el "Triduo Pascual" con la celebración de la Cena del Señor; este día celebramos la institución de la Eucaristía y del sacerdocio, el mandamiento nuevo del amor, el lavatorio de los pies. Es un día tremendamente cargado de temas de reflexión. No podemos dejar de asistir a esta gran Eucaristía y reflexionar en los grandes temas de este día. VIERNES SANTO: este día recordamos la pasión y la muerte de Cristo. Que este día abrasemos la cruz- y recordemos las palabras de Cristo, el que quiera ser mi discípulo, que carga con su cruz cada día. SABADO SANTO: el día de la gran VIGILIA PASCUAL. En la vigilia pascual celebra-mos la Resurrección de Cristo, es la vigilia más importante de todo el año, se le llama la "madre de todas las vigilias". Este día renovamos nuestro bautismo junto con quienes serán iniciados plenamente con el Bautismo, la Confirmación y la Eucaristía (primera comunión). Asistamos a esta gran celebración con espíritu alegre y generoso; renovemos con entusiasmo y alegría nuestro bautismo. Hoy está prohibido quedarse en casa, debemos asistir fielmente a esta gran ce-lebración. DOMINGO DE RESURRECCION: ¡Cristo ha resucitado, aleluya, aleluya! la Resurrección es el centro de nuestra fe. A partir de este domingo, iniciamos el tiempo pascual, que dura cincuenta días y culmina con el Domingo de pentecostés.

HOLY WEEK Holy Week, is the most important week of the whole liturgical year. It begins on Palm Sunday and ends on Easter Sun-day. This week, we celebrate the PASCHAL TRIDUUM (Christ’s death and resurrection). This is a special week for Catholics, because in it, we commemorate the life, passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Let this week, a spe-cial week in our experience of faith, be a week of living our faith. We will briefly reflect on the most important days: PALM SUNDAY: remember Christ triumphantly entered Jerusalem, the people acclaimed him as king, cheer, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” This day is a foretaste of the great triumph of Christ over death. HOLY THURSDAY: starts the "Triduum" with the celebration of the Lord's Supper, this day we celebrate the institution of the Eucharist and the priesthood, the new commandment of love, and the washing of the feet. It is a day full of tremendous food for thought. We need to attend this great Celebration of the Eucharist and re-flect on the great issues of the day. HOLY FRIDAY: this day we remember the passion and death of Christ. The cross is the great symbol of this day, the cross reminds us of Christ dying on the cross as a great expression of his fidelity to the Father’s will; Christ freely gives His life, but comes fully to teach us to be His faithful followers. May we on this day embrace our cross and remember the words of Christ, who wants me to be His disciple, to carry my daily cross . HOLY SATURDAY: the day of the Great Vigil of Easter. At the Easter Vigil we celebrate the Resurrection of Christ, is the largest vigil throughout the year, is called the "mother of all vigils". This day we renew our baptism along with who will be fully initiated in Baptism, Confirmation and First Communion. We will witness this grand celebration with a joyful and generous spirit, full of enthusiasm and joy by renewing our baptism. Today is forbidden to stay at home, we must faithfully attend this great celebration. EASTER SUNDAY: Christ is risen, alleluia, alleluia! Resurrection is the center of our faith. Starting this Sunday, the Easter season lasts fifty days and ends with Pentecost Sunday.

Tri-Parish Easter Speaker Series
