CARY ARTS CENTER| FREE Join us as we bring together government leaders, builders, and policymakers to address the issue of affordable housing in Wake County and the Triangle. REMEMBERING LEADERS OF THE DREAM (age 4-10) SATURDAY, JANUARY 19 | 10 A.M. CARY ARTS CENTER | FREE Hear award-winning storyteller and author Willa Brigham as she shares stories about some of the key leaders of the Civil Rights movement. is family-friendly program will introduce young people to sheroes and heroes who through their efforts and sacrifices made a difference; then take a photo with a life-size portrait of them and enjoy hands-on crafts. Ideal for ages 4 to 10. WILMINGTON ON FIRE SATURDAY, JANUARY 19 | 2 P.M. CARY ARTS CENTER | FREE is film documents the Wilmington Massacre of 1898; a bloody attack on the African-American community by a heavily armed white mob in the port city of Wilmington, North Carolina. It is considered one of the only successful examples of a violent overthrow of an existing government and left countless numbers of African-Americans dead and exiled from the city. Director Christopher Everett will lead an audience discussion after the screening. CELEBRATING THE DREAM SATURDAY, JANUARY 19 | 8 P.M. CARY ARTS CENTER | FREE We come together to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King as we carry his work forward. An evening of song and music featuring the Pleasant Grove Church Gospel Choir, harpist Winifred Garrett, and the North Carolina Central University Vocal Jazz Ensemble. THE CARY THEATER PRESENTS AL: MY BROTHER SUNDAY, JANUARY 20 | 2 P.M. THE CARY THEATER | FREE A documentary about white civil rights activist and attorney Alan McSurely and his more than 50-year battle against racism. A film that inspires young, old, black, and white, to come together and demand a government that serves the needs and rights of all. Producer-Writer-Director Cash Michaels leads an audience discussion following the screening.
