The Freshers Fair offers unrivalled access for brands

to engage with this target audience in person, at a time when they are

enthusiastically forming new relationships with brands.

In 2012, the fair attracted over 2,500 students with over 90 stalls present. It is

our aim to make the Freshers Fair bigger and bigger each year. The Fair is one

of the biggest events of the year at York St John and it is a perfect

opportunity for you to come and advertise your business to almost half of our

student body in one day. There is no other exposure like this.

It is up to you what you do at the Freshers Fair, be it data collection, flyer

distribution or simply talking to as many students as you can. The possibilities

are endless.

This year, the fair will be held on Wednesday 18th September 2013.

The Students’ Union can send emails via YSJSU.com to students who have

signed up to the website (all students will be encouraged to do this). Emails

can be targeted to specific student groups who you feel may be interested

in your business. This can be by age, course, interests, sports club, societies

etc.

Posters and flyers are still one of the most effective forms of communicating

with our students. We have poster sites situated in highly visible areas

throughout the Students’ Union, campus, and within the University. We also

have an SU Promo Team who go out weekly round campus and flyer

students.

Flyering is an ideal way of promoting your company or service to our students. All flyers in the SU and on campus are distributed by our marketing team, who also remove any unauthorised flyers at the same time.

The promotions team who carry out the majority of distribution for YSJSU have

all been made aware of our policy on external advertisers who flyer

unauthorised material. This ensures that no conflicting businesses will be able

to overshadow your advertising and all unauthorised material will be

disposed of.

Plasma screen advertising is one of the most new and

innovative ways of advertising within the Students’

Union. Adverts are shown all day, every day on 42” plasma screens

throughout the Students’ Union buildings. The majority of pictorial advertising

will be done this way in 2012/2013

Events

There are many opportunities throughout the year to get your business

noticed by thousands of students by sponsoring some of the major events we

hold each year.

In the past, businesses such as Topman, Domino’s Pizza and Burtons have

benefited from extra exposure that our sponsorship provides.

Sponsorship packages can include poster/flyer branding, social media

consultancy, presence at the event itself, visual branding – the possibilities are

endless!!

Campaign

The Students’ Union runs many campaigns throughout the year on many

different issues surrounding student life. Just some of the campaigns we run

are: Silent Students, Happy Homes (SSHH!), More Than Just a Bar, Silence is

Golden and Happy Campus.

All campaigns ran by YSJSU are available to sponsor. Again, sponsorship

packages are tailor made to your needs and the campaign you wish to

support.

Video Campaign

The Students’ Union is developing its presence on YouTube by making videos

for the students. We have a number of video series’ that are available to

sponsor:

Ask Dan: a series of education videos, 20 videos per year over 2,000 views to

date

Soapbox: videos based on a question, to get the thoughts of students and

local residents

Sports and Societies

At York St John Students’ Union we over 40 groups who are seeking

sponsorship for the 2012/2013 academic year. These groups range from sports

clubs such as Football, Rugby and Hockey, to societies such as Musical

Production Society and Snow sports, to student groups such as Ents and Ethics

and Environment.

In return for sponsorship money, these student groups will promote your

business and use your services. As each group is different, so is each

sponsorship package.

Social Media is a new and growing method of advertising. We are offering

social media consultancy. To date we have 3,211 likes on our York St John

Students’ Union Facebook and 1,138 on YSJSU What’s On Facebook. We

have 1,002 followers on @YSJSU Twitter and 403 follows on @YSJSUWhatsOn.

We can post on behalf of your business to these social media outlets on a

regular basis, as well as advise you on when the best time to post yourselves

is, what you should be posting and how often you should be doing it. All

social media consultancy is price on enquiry.

We do not allow businesses to post as themselves on our Facebook page and

we do not retweet businesses who request us to if they have not paid to do

so.

Every year, YSJSU sends all of our students a pre-arrival mailing in August.

This year, we are sending the mailer electronically, directly to the inbox of all

of our 6,000 students.

This form of mailer allows you to include your advert with our information to all

The Union Handbook is an extensive guide to student life in and around

York, as well as containing essential information about York St John Students
